Ethiopians in the Los Angeles and surrounding areas marked Birtukan’s first year in Prison in a demonstration and candle light vigil held on Sunday, January 3, 2010. Participant reaffirmed their commitment and solidarity with Ms. Birtukan Mideksa and demanded her unconditional release. The Ethiopian flags were flying high by the Federal Building and numerous placards exposing the dictatorial regime in Ethiopia were displayed and Birtukan’s brochures plus post cards were handed out to the public.

Andinet-Los Angeles Support, organized the event and few organizers spoke about the heroic accomplishments of Judge Birtukan Mideka. This 1st anniversary of her arrest proved her unwavering dedication to freedom and democracy, she chose to remain in jail rather than tell a lie to the Ethiopian people. This firm dedication for a real democracy earned her even greater admiration and acceptance all over the world.

Bitukan was rearrested only because she was seen as a threat for the upcoming election. In a recent statement Meles stated that “Birtukan will not be released from jail” this is additional evidence that he alone decides on anyone’s faith and Ethiopia is under one man’s brutal dictatorship.

Birtukan Mideksa is able to rekindle the hope for freedom in the hearts of Ethiopians because she reorganized the dismantled opposition party and stood firm against the dictatorship at the expense of her personal safety and she will always remain the hearts of millions of Ethiopians until Ethiopia is free from dictatorship.
