United States Strongly Criticizes Ethiopia’s Jamming of Voice of America – Gordon Duguid

The United States opposes Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles’ decision to jam Voice of America’s Amharic Service and condemns his comparison of their programming to Radio Mille Collines of Rwanda. (more…)

The United States opposes Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles’ decision to jam Voice of America’s Amharic Service and condemns his comparison of their programming to Radio Mille Collines of Rwanda. Comparing a respected and professional news service to a group that called for genocide in Rwanda is a baseless and inflammatory accusation that seeks only to deflect attention away from the core issue.

The Prime Minister may disagree with news carried in Voice of America’s Amharic Service broadcasts; however, a decision to jam VOA broadcasts contradicts the Government of Ethiopia’s frequent public commitments to freedom of the press. We note that the Ethiopian Constitution states that all citizens have the right to freedom of expression “without any interference” and that this right shall include freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds, “regardless of frontiers.” The Constitution further notes that freedom of the press shall specifically include “prohibition of any form of censorship.” We look to the Government of Ethiopia to abide by its constitution.

We call on the Ethiopian Government to protect the universal and fundamental right of freedom of expression.

Since 1991 the Ethiopian people have never heard a truethfull new when Meles and his boss Bereket Simon arrived to Addis from the aiga jungle; HOWEVER, the Ethiopian people are finally realizing whatever Meles and his boss say at the end of the day is always the opposite….lying, killing, looting, lying again, act as a leader and take pictures with world leaders to confuse the confused people, begging, looting again, lying again, “shaebia done this and that”, terrorist, kill and murder again, “terrorism” and terrorise the Ethiopian people with donated weapons, economic progress at 10.9%, and looting. The cycle of Meles and his boss Bereket had been the same and predictable but their days are numbered and they will serve time in the same cell in Ethiopia. There will be peace and prosperity in Ethiopia as well as the whole horn of Africa ones these sub-human thugs are caught red-handed!!!

This is a drama. The US controls the Ethiopian Govenment. They are friends. They are just acting like they dont get along. Both have interests in the fact they don’t want no freedom of speech for UDJ and AEUP, who recently have used the VOA to air their informations to the people of Ethiopia. VOA was probably the only media that dispensed information to the whole country. All medias are controlled by government and the so called private medias are cronies of the EPRDF. Meles is a slave and for him to jam his master’s media is not an option. It just doesn’t sound right. Their is something that we don’t swallow here. We shouldn’t be consuming all what is written by media. The masters of Meles have to allow it, and act like he functions by himself as a dictator. The US then gives us their regular lipservice. Dont you guys know those statements? The US is concerned, The US condemns, The US is following the developments, bla bla. Because we are quite, they think we are idiots. We know the US helps dictators in other worlds so this is not new thing to understand. If this is the way the US wants to continue, we need to stand up and tell them we condemn their stance. By the way what does genocide in Rwanda has to do with radio jamming? Apples and Oranges. A dummy dictator trying to act smart. It tells us that both the dictator and his friends want us to talk about Genocide, bla bla. ethnic bla bla, so we get to think negative and fight each other. They on the way are creating propoganda. This is a plan of this dictator and his foreign friends that are enemies to our country. They have tried this politics for two decades and it is failing. With our love to our brothers and sisters and our country, we can drive this devilish view out of our society back to Europe where it belongs. Long Live Ethiopia.

The “call on the Ethiopian Government to protect the universal and fundamental right of freedom of expression” will fall on deaf ears unless complemented by withholding of direct financial support to the despotic ruling party of Meles Zenawwi

It looks like Meles is getting to commit another genocide in Ethiopia. First, he restrict the movements of foriegn aid agencies and humaniterian organizatins now, he is blooking the only out let that the Ethiopia people have for balanced news. He is clossing every windo and door. Evil Meles is upto something. I think it is genocide. The America government needs to do more than condemen Meles. I don’t think their appology and all that would matter after he kill our people.

What Melles has done and said is completely consistent with his regime’s well known policy of ignoring Ethiopia’s constitution, abuse of human rights, and the total stifling of freedom of expression.

What should be put to question especially at this critical stage is USA’s policy towards Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. It’s tragic to note that even Obama who had promised so much to be on the side of the African people, has instead continued with the Bush policy of being an accomplice with dictators such as Melles. The usual pretext for such an immoral stance is the purported need for stability and the fight against international terrorism. USA and France are maintaining a military presence in the Horn of Africa costing hundreds of millions of US dollars for the mere purpose of “containment”. However, such a myopic policy which victimizes the poor people in Ethiopia is not in USA’s long-term interests.

It is the fervent hope of all people who have the highest respect for USA, the sole superpower in the world now, is that it will, for once, side with its values of democracy and respect for human rights in Ethiopia.

The fight against dicatorship in Ethiopia should be prosecuted by Ethiopians who should NOT be expected to wage war against a superpower! Therefore, USA’s policy in Ethiopia needs to change dramatically to be in support of the Ethiopian people. One way that this could be expressed is for USA to simply insist that the Melles regime ensure that the May 2010 election would be absolutely free and fair and that international observers would be present at most election sites in urban AND rural areas. USA should also strongly insist that the Melles regime should immediately cease its harrassment, intimidation, imprisonment and killing of opposition party members.

USA has the carrot and stick to make a difference in Ethiopia.

Here we go.. I think Meles is going to commit a suicide.. Comparing VOA with Rwanda’s radio station is way disrespectful, not only to the VOA but also to the US government. I think Meles has reached a level where he is not intimidated by any government. This is can lead to unexpected start.

Melese is not only political ignorant ,but also arrogant. He considers him self as an intellectual because he is surrounded by high school dropped out idiots. He insulted USA’s ambassador in UN as an “idiocy ignorant ” and last time he said ” America has an intellectual defecicy’ all this shows how melese and his group are so deseparate and start bite every body like mad dogs. Melese and his group can not run at least for one month with out USA’s support.

Zinawi the fugitive is clearly a loser and in the run;well, can he crawl out of his own ridiclous world?

Again and again he fails to realize that he can not defeat Ethiopians by bullets and guns;of course, as guns and bullets don’t vote, people do, he lost the election and was crushed to a complete defeat in 2005.Now,as he is well aware of how Ethiopians stood together and fight to the final victory, clearly the victory will soon come into the hands of millions of Ethiopians, can he really come into a complete and final terms that he will definitely lose the election of 2010 to Ethiopians?

Well,no amount of suppression and oppression imposed by Zinawi-the criminal can not and will not stop Ethiopians to bring back their beloved country into their caring hands;this,Ethiopians can make and do it.Amen and Amen.
