Internal Colonization – by Sahlu Bekele ( Toronto )

November 16th, 2010 Print Print Email Email

The Spanish, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Italians and the Dutch were the major colonizers of their respective colonies in Africa. All colonies except Ethiopia had suffered humiliation and conquest in the hands of these European forces. After the colonizers devoured all the resources and decided when they had enough, they allowed independence of their colonies willingly or unwillingly only about half a century ago. Ethiopia was an exception in the history of colonization. When the British army descended on Ethiopia in 1868, King Tewodros shot himself in the head not to give in to the foreign forces in honour of his people and his land at Mekdela. The British left for England taking the King’s wife and his son along with them. When the Italians marched on Ethiopia in 1896, King Menilik mobilized Ethiopians and defeated the Italians at the battle of Adwa. Having suffered their humiliation and having mourned for forty years, the Italians again tried to conquer Ethiopia unsuccessfully for a brief period between 1936 and 1941. Forced by the relentless resistance of the Ethiopian patriots who fought them in the jungle, meadows, mountains and valleys, and by the late support of the British and Americans, they finally succumbed to their defeat and went back to where they came from. So there was a short history of Italian attempt to colonize Ethiopia that never materialized. However their failure has become the mother of success by the internal colonizers we call ‘Weyanes’ who have done what the Italian were not able to do and goes the saying, “Enemies never come far, near!”

A narrow nationalist gorilla movement named, TPLF (Tigrean People Liberation Front) as the name indicates has its mandate to secede the province of Tigray from the rest of Ethiopia. Its mission was supposed to do that and stop right there. However, the people of Ethiopia who had been repressed and reigned brutally by the Mengistu’s military junta did not resist these new Weyane visitors substantially because they thought they could bring peace and freedom for these were the values the Weyanes allegedly fought for. Nevertheless, they had a different agenda hiding in their package. Just like the European colonizers, they implemented the ‘divide and rule’ formula in the name of “the right of nationalities” by splitting Ethiopians on ethnic lines and labeling them as Oromos, Amharas, Debubs, Tigrians and so on. The current population of Ethiopia is estimated to be 85.2 million of which Tigreans constitute 4.5 million the majority of whom are not even represented or served by the Weyane rulers whose job in the outset was to liberate and set them free, free from whom, I don’t know. Weyanes, who are a handful duces have their claws stuck in the flesh of Ethiopians including the majority of Tigrean people and are determined to conquer and reign the nation indefinitely. Their ignorance and our stupidity is to talk about democracy, election and human rights in a vacuum and to be amateur actors all together. The issue clearly has to be a movement of independence and freedom from the internal colonization that we are truly facing. So we can forget about all the other socio political matters that come with a free and democratic system and our agenda today has to be standing against the modern internal colonization of Weyanes in Ethiopia. Do not expect a pigeon egg from a snake. That is what they are and this is the only truth. 6.07% of the population has controlled the other 93.93%. This is not democracy but is aristocracy or autocracy, simply put complete dictatorship. Therefore, the majority of Ethiopians had been and are being colonized by Emperor Meles and his Agazi Army. This colonization however could be more dangerous for the ordinary people of Tigray if the resentment against them translates in undesirable consequences at the end of the day. Uniting and standing as one force against this colonization is a timely slogan unless our view and political participation is biased by economic and other personal interests.

The history of colonization in Africa is a good historical facts, but it is irrelavant with the Ethiopian current situation . What I am trying to get across to you is that all the so called nationalist movements have the same out look and goal that is targeting one ethinic group . Best examples are EPLF, TPLF, OLF, ONLF, etc . Who benefitted from the TPLF movement? Mr,Sir, you and I will agree with this answer -a handful of elites . The people of Tigray are suffering like the rest of the Ethiopian people . Stop black mailing the people and do not join the narrow nationalists . If you want resent, do it aginst the rulers and the oppresors not to the opressed. I am sick and tired of the dividers . In the end you said the TPLF mandates was to secede . Which ethinic or nationalist movement does not want to break-up from the main land? Let us not be novice .

Mr. Sahlu Bekele, is this your knowledge of Colony, nationalist and oppression? I am really sad to read from some one who is in advanced world with all facilities of democracy and social service, but dust filled mind. Two things first, One do not lie or try to know what is what. second, do not try to distinguish between people and party/Government. It is this hate and confusion which put the country in civil war for decades.

I agree with the writer that it is colonization. But this is a new form of colonization (Neocolonization)by the same Europeans, make it Euro-asians for the 21st century, indirectly through the idiot dictators. It is not a dictatorship by the tigrean people. Some tigreans are obviously are using their ethnic background as a means to take advantgae over the Ethiopian people, but the extent is not like some serious colonizers from Saudi Arabia (Mudi). Staying away from politics is not going to bring economical changes for Ethiopian as some people claim. Economical change comes by political movements or by force.

I am happy if it wasn’t,but it is.People here want to live in illusion this reality is harsh for them. But come on.IT IS FACT!!!.All wealth is being transferred systematically to tigreans. The problem is our people are not courageous, and determined to change the reality in their face. Are we human beings by the way?i don’t know.

No question that ALL nations in Ethiopia are under the colonization of Tigrai. Oromo did fight against this colonizatuion since 1991; Amhara didn’t yet figure out that their subjugation is colonization. But now the seem to wake up. That is why Oromo asked: http://gadaa.com/oduu/5436/2010/09/04/oromians-can-we-welcome-the-amhara-nation-to-the-club-of-the-colonized-nations-in-the-horn/

This article speakes to core theises formulated about ethnic and secessionist politics and/or poicies initiated by TPLF, a liberation movement, of the socialistic student revolution in terms of the oppression of nations and nationalities by the so called colonizer of the so called Amhara regime, when it is not, as much as the current regime is not Tigrean regime as it is TPLF/eprdf regime, where eprdf are are surrogate or teletafi parties advancing the policies of TPLF Politbuero, who are in control of of the political, economic, security, police and military organizations/systems under their control with a divide and rule strategy much as the Italian colonilaist had done. They had had not reached to the initial level of 1991 without having eliminated their TPLF counter parts, eprp and laterdefeat the Dergue with help of all liberation movements including the Amhara, the Oromo, ONLF and others, initially geared to liberating themselves but later allowed to take over the central government only to institute ethnic and secessionist politics and or policies in the Ethiopian Constitution and induce others to buy/succumb to it. This confirms the manifesto of TPLF in their plan of disintegrating Ethiopia. Inernal colonization fits the bill, followed by Ethnic agenda rather than national agenda of Ethiopianism and Ethiopian National Interests. Whichever party adheres to ethnic agenda, implicitely or explicitely upholds and or sustains the TPLF/eprdf regime, with no ifs or but about it. That is one of the core reasons the TPLF/regime cannot be dismantled while it is being supported by the the teletafi and loyalist opposition parties on its ethnic and and /or secessionist politics and/or policies and western governments for budget support to the current adminstration and aid programs which are known to contribute to further repression of its citizens.

The way I understood the content of the above article is simply the writer want us to know that the tplf is anti-Ethiopia and Ethiopians, even Hon. Dr GREGORY STANTON on 7 November 2010 the commemoration of the 2006 massacre of fallen Ethiopians on his speech he declared the tplf as internal colonizer and expressed his concern & worries that the tigreans would be paying price for the sin of melese and Co,furthermore he also urged that we should stop dividing our selves instead unit and remove melese and his ethno-centric tyrannic regime. Its funny to see the olf’sympatizers trying to woo AMARAS to join them to fight the tplf while at the same time accusing them of being colonizers, for that they try to show us annexed territories of the Amara people from Gondar & Wollo so that we would be anti-tigrean,thanx to Gebremedihin Araya of former tplf operative we know that it wasn’t the tigreans who did all that but melese and co therefore in the post tplf era there shall be no problem not only between amaras, tigreans, guragaes, afars haderaes but also eritreans. After all these people share the same ancestors and identity as ethiopians and these people have been pioneers and defenders of ethiopia.the future would bring more unity and co-operation between these people to defend them selves, their country ethiopia and to put an end to the fanatic settlers ”pie from the sky demand”after all could we forget that these fanatics told us we are colonizing oromia and ogaden,Ethiopia was created by King Minilik 100 years ago.Theses pathetic fanatic settlers forgot that they were born and brought up on our ancestral land a land which was taken away from our ancestors in the sixteen century also their fore fathers lived in harmony with the rest of ethiopians. It make me and likes laugh a lot to here all these jerks talk about its the end of Ethiopia, amara, tigrea etc…let me remind you that the end of you indeed has come however Ethiopia shall be protected, her children shall be liberated from the tplf rule yours likes ideology shall be barred once and for all.Don’t forget that you have been talking for nearly half a century.Don’t forget what was wellega, illubabur, balle ,aris, shewa etc in the 16 century, know that there shall be no inch you have day dream about we shall not sleep for you until the end of time. Ethiopia shall be defended by native Ethiopians.

The point is not on telling what is happening in Ethiopia. Everybody knows that. The point should be on ideas how to bring the current govt down. Any idea how to do that? Do not repeat what Weyane does, how they hurt the country…but let’s is work on the way of bringing them down, period!.

    “Ethiopiaiew”,

Wow what a true color of Woyane agent. Do you think we are dumb not to understand what your mission is? You guys hane no bone of culture in you and you think you can colonize the country forever by instigating hate among the rest of Ethiopian people? Time is fast approaching.

“Samuel” I want to know that I am a sworn opponent of the tplf, for that matter I have been in exile for the last nearly two decade doing my part to help free Ethiopia from the tplf ethno-centric apartheid rule, like the rest my people(Amara)I am not a tribalist how ever at the same time I also live to fight those who accuse my ethnic like as if we have colonized them, that is what the likes of “Argii Amani”believes, and my respons was based on what I have known so far, there for the struggle to liberat Ethiopia means we shall be fighting all tribalists both the tplf and those in the opposition because they all share the ideology to dismember Ethiopia at the expense of all freedom loving Ethiopians. So this fact remains unanswered. So if you are not a tribalist Oromo I urge you to read what Argii Amani want us to read about that the”Amaras have waked up”in gadaa.com like as if we don’t about the internal colonization of ETHIOPIA and its PEOPLE by the tplf and that doesn’t necessarily obiliged the Amaras or any other pan-ETHIOPIAN ethnics to join those who are longing to dismember mother Ethiopia. There for I conclude my response to you by saying any tribalist movement which intends to dismember our country ETHIOPIA is never different from tplf although it is still in the opposition.

Add to the above remarks about a regime with ethnic based agenda, that is not a democratic government with independent branches of Jududuciary, parliament, and the executive branches of the government of the people by the people for the people, elected by free individuals with liberty and freedom of all sorts for the silent majority of Ethiopians in all walks of life, including private ownership of land and properties as one the means of production in a democratic and capitalistic society.

To the dismay of the press relase of K-5 at the end of their tour to USA, which reads” ” No change but durable democracy”; here is a quote cited by Margarett Wente in her article, “Does aid do more harm than godd in Ethiopia”, ” Ethiopia must stay undemocratic until the important work of development is dine”, Meles told Mr Gill as qouted by her.

SOME SEEM TO BE CONFUSED BY THE WORD “INTERNAL”. IF THE HEADER MAY HAVE BEEN “DOMESTIC COLONIZATION”, THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN LESS CONFUSION. I MEAN AN HONEST CONFUSION. SUCH PEOPLE LACK THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IS MEANT BY “BROTHERHOOD COLONIZATION”, I. E., A DOMESTIC ETHNIC GROUP RULING IN A LITTLE DIFFERENT WAY FROM CLASSICAL COLONIZERS (DIRECT COLONIZERS). AND SUCH PEOPLE MAY NOT EVEN BELIEVE THE EXISTANCE OF DOMESTIC (INTERNAL) COLONIZATION. WEYANES CALL IT “ETHNIC FEDERALISM” IN WHICH EVERY ETHNIC EXCERCISES ITS CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS WHILE LEAVING POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION AND DECISION MAKING TO WEYANES. THIS PARALLELS THE BRITISH COLONIAL POLICY OF “CULTURAL AUTONOMY” IN WHICH THE BRITISH COLONIZERS WOULD NOT INTERFER IN THE COUNTRIES’ CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, THEREBY MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A FREEDOM TO EXCERCISE CULTURE AND RELIGION. THE POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION AND DECISION MAKING IS LEFT TO THE BRITISH COLONIZERS. SAME TECHNICS AND METHODS APPLIED IN BOTH PERISPECTIVES. WHEN COLONIZATION IS TALKED ABOUT IT IS NOT RESTRICTED TO FOREIGNERS. YOUR COUSINS FROM NEXT DOOR COULD BE MORE WORSE AND VICIOUS THAN FOREIGNERS. IF THAT IS THE CASE (THE DEED AND NOT COUNTRY OF ORIGING), THEN, THE CONFUSED GUYS MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THE TERM “INTERNAL COLONIALISM” OR “DOMESTIC COLONIALISM” REFERS TO AS WAY OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL, REGARDLESS OF NATURAL ORIGIN. SO, SAHILU BEKELE’S ATTEMPT SEEMS (AS TO MY UNDERSTANDING)TO BE WHAT I MENTIONED ABOVE. PLEASE, LET US GET REAL AND GROW UP!
