20 Years (1991-2011) By Yared Ayicheh
On May 28, 2011 it will be 20 years since the Derg fell and the EPRDF took power.
More than 20 years since more than 60,000 guerilla fighters gave their lives to overthrow the Derg regime.
What would the martyrs think if they see the Ethiopian Parliament? Does it look different from the EWP (E-SE-PA) congress?
What would the martyrs say if they hear about the 3.2 million Ethiopians who are facing famine in Ethiopia today?
Would the martyrs be proud of giving their lives for an economy with inflation rate of 30%?
Wouldn’t the 60,000 martyrs be shocked to see the same person in power for 20 years?
Would the martyrs have died if they knew their sacrifices would lead to the imprisonment of 20,000 to 30,000 Oromo political prisoners in Ethiopia?
After 20 years would the 60,000 martyrs be proud of the election 2010 ‘result’ of the 99.6% parliamentary seats ‘won’ by the EPRDF?
Would the martyrs be proud of Ato Meles Zenawi and his administrations violations of the Ethiopian constitution? For example:
Article 12.1, Conduct and Accountability of Government: Violated when Ato Meles refused to disclose to the Parliament the number of Ethiopian military casualties of war during the invasion of Somalia in 2006-2009. (Article 12.1, “The conduct of affairs of government shall be transparent.”)
Article 15, Right to Life: Violated when 193 civilians where executed by Federal Police in broad day light in 2005. (Article 15, “Every person has the right to life. No person may be deprived of his life except as a punishment for a serious criminal offence determined by law.”)
Article 87.1, Principles of National Defense: 90% of Ethiopia’s military leadership is from the Tigrian ethnic group. (Article 87.1, “The composition of the national armed forces shall reflect the equitable representation of the Nations, Nationalities and Peoples of Ethiopia.”)
Looking at the past 20 years of EPRDF’s dictatorship, would the martyrs be proud or ashamed?
The martyrs would NOT be proud of the past 20 years.
The martyrs would NOT be proud of the EPRDF.
The martyrs would feel humiliated and embarrassed by Ato Meles’ dictatorship and his failed leadership.
Did 60,000 martyrs give their lives for these shameful 20 years?
Disgraceful 20 years.
