Who is the founder of the OAU?

A few days ago, by accident the mouse pointer of my computer hovered over the question: Who is the founder of the OAU? The place was on . For some reason, it caught my attention.

I felt as if it were sort of extrasensory message for me. After all, don’t they say that coincidence, which some people also refer to as telepathy, is a state of mind that represents high-level percolation of events and thoughts of personalities?

In the case of the question above, admittedly it was something already on my mind especially after the events surrounding the convening of the 18th Summit of the heads of state and government of Africa Unity (AU) in Addis Abeba from 29-31 January 2012.

The new AU headquarters, built by China, as gift to Africa, next to it is Kwame Nkrumah’s statue

I knew that for days I had felt serious reservations by the unveiling on 28 January of the statue of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a proud son of Africa’s who had introduced the continent to Pan Africanism, standing alone. It was and is no consolation for me that underneath the statue are inscribed the words, “Ethiopia shall stretch forth her hands unto God, Africa must unite.”

Nevertheless, the effort to stand him alone left a bad taste inside me; I see it as an attempt to systematically amend or revise history, especially the decisive activities of the other former leaders preceding the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.

Not that I think is the final authority on this matter, but my reservation was all the more strengthened when I saw its answer, which confidently states:

The founder of the OAU is Emperor Haile Selasie I of Ethiopia. as [sic] we all know that the two blocs namely, Monrovia and Casablanca did not see eye to eye. So it was left to this magnificent leader to bring together these two blocs.
Hence, the next thing I did was to check out the African Union’s (AU) webpage if they have pulled together a page on the history of Africa’s efforts in the struggle for continental unity and its origins. Foolishly, I thought I was lucky when I saw under ‘About Us’, ‘History’. I followed it and it took me to ‘OAU Founders’ (in plural).

I clicked it. To my disappointment, I only found the same title dead and faded. The rest of the page was silent, more as the silence of an abandoned territory after war or, at its worst, an abandoned cemetery. I said to myself, I must be fortunate, since this situation has compelled me to write this piece.

Before proceeding further, I should, however, assure my Ghanaian friends and readers that there is no snippet of doubt in my mind that President Kwame Nkrumah was the initiator of the Pan Africanist movement in Africa. He even endeavored to realize his dream of African Unity, making Ghana’s external policy an instrument toward that and by experimenting sort of loose union he had tried with Guinea in 1959 and Mali in 1960. Nonetheless, as successive events had shown, it was hardly something for which the time had come.

Therefore, note that my reservation here is in no way to question Mr. Nkrumah’s thinking on Pan Africanism or his contributions to continental unity that helped Africa to play an outstanding and decisive role he played in the anti-colonial struggle.

The problem is, of course, for obvious reasons in Africa — almost all of it personal and a mental state of African leaders — Africa has difficulties to come to terms with the past and history. This has not been possible for the simple reason because of the manner in which African leaders seize power and exercise their powers — by force and tyrannical rule. This has put them in a constant search for subterfuges to explain away their excesses. One of such efforts is their conscious effort to subject generations of Africans to systematic and brutal historical revisionism.

For instance, why should Meles Zenawi openly and systematically discourage erecting Emperor Haile Selassie’s statue within the premises of the AU, as one of the foremost fathers of the OAU? Why should that make the long gone emperor a threat to TPLF and EPRDF Chairman’s heavily fortified power? Is that not a clear-cut denial of history?

Believe me, I was never pro-monarchy yesterday; I am not pro-monarchy today. But I can see no reason why a country, its political leaders engage in a war with the past. They least favor they could their nations is to correct past mistakes; create better conditions for today and tomorrow, instead of historical revisionism!

This incident and the subsequent thoughts brought to mind the 1999 article by a certain Seleshi Yaleh, entitled Architecturally Speaking…On Heroes and Monuments: A Reflection on Discontinuity. Its truism and eloquence, behind which lies a fellow countryman’s frustration about our leaders needless war with history has spoken to me. In Ethiopia, it has been manifesting itself in the renaming of libraries, buildings and streets. He observes:

If rulers were reluctant about demolishing all traces of their predecessors; if rulers were confident about sharing the limelight with the heroes of the day; if rulers were wise enough to reward and honor indigenous accomplishment and achievement…their monuments, I am sure, would shine and sparkle for millennia.

Ghana honors Nkrumah

I respect Ghana for honoring its visionary son by stepping forward and managing to give Nkrumah’s contributions a pride of place in history. To start with in 2009, they won the approval of the AU summit to recognize and observe September 21, the birthday of Nkrumah, as Founders Day.

Interestingly, this was followed by a vision by a Ghanaian architect and sculptor by the name Dr. Don Arthur, an official in President John Evans Atta Mills’ office. He toyed with idea of the statue and the president welcomed and gave it his approval, according to Ghanaian news source . The Ghana government then insisted to the AU that the 3.5-meter statue, cast in bronze, would only be made in Ghana and was airlifted to Addis Abeba.

The statue was unveiled on 28 January, moments after the AU headquarters building was inaugurated by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, the outgoing Chairman of the AU and Dr.Jean Ping the AU Commission Chairman, who just lost his post. A few heads of state attended the unveiling of the statue, according to news sources, possibly because many knew that something was missing that day.

Most importantly, they all must have known for a fact that, along with President Kwame Nkrumah, it was Emperor Haile Selassie, President Sékou Toure of Guinea and President Modibo Keita of Mali who in the final hours spared Africa of utter failure in forging continental unity of purpose through a regional organization.

The secret of Ethiopia, Guinea and Mali’s success was in bringing together the so-called Casablanca and Monrovia blocs, an action which eventually led to the establishment of the OAU in May 1963 as symbol of Africa’ Unity.

Incidentally, I am elated in seeing this afternoon on ESAT’s webpage that two distinguished Ethiopian Professors Mesfin Woldmariam and Bahru Zewdie have also expressed their bewilderment by what now is seen as an attempt to eviscerate the frontal role other founding fathers of the OAU had played.

It is unfortunate that some leaders and officials of the AU turned a false default state to enable them get away with unacceptable actions. In other words, the omission of some aspects of history has been utilized with convenience of the jostle and bustle of a summit and willful historical neglect and irresponsible abandonment of the home countries of the other founding fathers, i.e., Ethiopia, Guinea and Mali in particular, so much politically self-absorbed and possibly with a sense of vindictiveness against the statures of long gone leaders that have done some good for their countries and Africa.

The difficult path of Pan Africanism

When one speaks of African unity, obviously he or she cannot separate it from its origin in the Pan Africanist Movement of the early 20th century, mostly associated with Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. In Africa, Pan Africanism was given root by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, who in his student days in the United States and the United Kingdom was an active participant in the struggles and activist movements of those days.

Upon his return to Ghana (Gold Coast then) in 1947, Nkrumah first became secretary general of the United Gold Coast Convention party, established by Dr. J. B. Danquah, whom he saw as enemy when he was in power and threw him to prison. Before that, however, he fully engaged himself in the anti-colonial struggle to help attain Ghana’s independence from Britain—more appropriately, home rule at the time.

Nkrumah thought he would do better in realizing the goal of independence and his life long ambition of African unity, more appropriately, Pan Africanism, which he not only practiced as politics but also lived with as profound personal conviction. Therefore, in 1949 he established his own party, the Convention People’s Party. With that as a mass galvanizing force, he led a series of strikes and boycotts and eventually forced independence from the British in 1957.

To his surprise and dismay, not long after Nkrumah realized that since late 1959 Africa was getting increasingly divided into north, east, South and west and other ideological groups. In fact, the more he tried on unity the more it became nearly impossible for him to see light of his nirvana in African Unity on account of the fact that Africa the division was getting deeper. At the same time, with economic factors and the clash of ambitions and intrigues within Ghana itself worked against him; his popularity sank at home.

The Casablanca and Monrovia blocs

Finally, they divisions within the different groups coalesced into two blocs — the so-called Casablanca and Monrovia groups. Nkrumah himself headed the Casablanca group.

The Casablanca bloc, according to Paul G. Adogamhe (PAN-AFRICANISM Revisited: Vision and Reality of African Unity and Development (2008), consisted, among others, of Ghana, Guinea, Morocco, Algeria, Congo, Mali, Tanzania, and Egypt. They favored political integration as a step toward economic integration and a socialist path to development.

This group had within it, among others, Ben Bella of Algeria, Patrice Lumumba of Congo, Ahmed Sékou Toure of Guinea, Modibo Keita of Mali, and Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt. The records show that this group was the hands on type and was impatient for the task in front of them, which means they were determined and but not strategic enough.

The Monrovia group was led by Nigeria’s Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and consisted of 24 countries, with Liberia and most of the French-speaking African countries. This group favored “functional approach to African Cooperation.”

The obstacle on the way toward African Unity was the lack of mechanism or a neutral country that could bring these two groups into talking. Since Ethiopia was not a member of any of them, it was being courted by both sides, which enabled it to understand better both sides. In terms of conviction, however, its sympathy was with the Monrovia group.

Ethiopia’s successful diplomacy heals the divisions

This is where Ethiopia’s diplomacy could pay a crucial role, especially with the advantage of not committed to any one of the two groups. However, it was convinced that something had to be done to overcome the hurdles to unity.

Thanks to the indefatigable efforts of Foreign Minister Ketema Yifru, according to a brilliant rendition of his performances by his son Mekonnen Ketema, who confirmed that his father endeavored to convince the emperor that Ethiopia must belong to “mainstream Africa” — meaning the Monrovia group. After hearing out Ketema Yifru’s views, the emperor summoned his officials to a meeting he chaired. Following that, the emperor gave his approval to Foreign Minister Ketema Yifru to take a position that protects Ethiopia’s interests and the future of Africa.

In the meantime, the foreign minister who had assumed his post only in June 1961 had already been working on plan how to bring the two blocs together, with approval of the emperor. He explored possibilities to bring members of the two blocs to a meeting in Addis Abeba. To that end, he first primarily focussed on President Sékou Toure of Guinea, a member of the Casablanca group, and the Guinean delegation to get his support to work together with Ethiopia.

As Egypt organized a conference of the Casablanca group in June 1962, to which Ethiopia was also invited, Foreign Minister Ketema had held discussions with the Guinean delegation to this end. Once he was satisfied by the positive response of the Guinean delegation, he asked the emperor to invite President Toure to Ethiopia for talks with him. He agreed and President Sékou Toure had his face to face with the emperor in Addis Abeba on 28 June 1962, which put on firm footing that there was chance for the Addis Abeba conference, more importantly the two blocs to work on their differences.

The emperor had already accepted Ketama’s plan on how to bring the two sides together, convincing President Sékou Toure that the division into blocs was detrimental to Africa’s interests. Using Ketema’s plan, he persuaded the Guinean leader to form partnership with Ethiopia. Once Guinea agreed to this position, Ethiopia secured a pledge that President Toure would speak in favour of unity. Following such arrangements, the emperor sent out invitations to the 32 African countries to attend a conference of both blocs in Addis Abeba.

Everyone responded affirmatively. This required, according to Makonnen Ketema, the Ethiopian foreign minister’s tour of all the capital cities to deliver the invitation personally and discuss with the governments leaders of all the countries about the conference.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia had prepared draft agenda, which according to Makonnen Ketema’s The Creation of the OAU consisted of:

• The establishment of an Organization of African States, with a charter and a permanent secretariat.
• Cooperation in areas of economy and social welfare, education and culture, and collective defense
• The final eradication of colonialism
• Means of combating racial discrimination and apartheid
• Possible establishment of regional economic groupings
• Disarmament
In opening the conference, Emperor Haile Selassie told his colleagues the head of state and government:

“We know that there are differences among us. Africans enjoy different cultures, distinctive values, special attributes. But we also know that unity can be and has been attained among men of the most disparate origins, that difference of race, of religion, of culture, of tradition, are no insuperable obstacles to the coming together of peoples. History teaches us that unity is strength and cautions us to submerge and overcome our difference in the quest for common goals, to strive, with all our combined strength, for the path to true African brotherhood and unity…Unless the political liberty for which Africans have for long struggled is complemented and bolstered by a corresponding economic and social growth, the breath of life which sustains our freedom may flicker out.”

Both the Casablanca and Monrovia blocs had also come to Addis Abeba with drafts of what their positions were. Following consultations at the level of foreign ministers, after some haggling, it was reported, they all agreed to work on the Ethiopian draft, aware that it could serve as a working basis since it had combined the essential positions of both sides.

In Addis Abeba, foreign ministers of the 32 countries, represented at the conference of ministers, finally drafted the OAU charter for approval by the heads of state and government. It was signed on 25 May 1963.Perhaps, it must have surprised every one of the leaders by the speed with which the two blocs came together and overcame their differences.

That is an important contribution Ethiopia has made to the establishment of the OAU.

Fortunately, with the establishment of the OAU, President Nkrumah must have drawn some degree of satisfaction to see in his own lifetime the emergence of a continental organization that became the leader in the liberation struggles to free those peoples and countries that still were under colonialism. Ghana provided weapons, as did Ethiopia to freedom fighters, especially in southern Africa.

Three years after the establishment of the OAU, President Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in a military coup in 1966, while he was on a state visit to North Vietnam and China. He lived in exile in Conakry, Guinea.

My friend even though this was an interesting argument, I/We have to look at the bigger picture. All those who ask why is the AU in Ethiopia will know the reason and those people that ask from now on wards are those that will seek to study about our African history. It is not a matter of rewriting and undoing history but a matter of finding a commonality for all Africans and standing united. Dr, Kwame Nkrumah deserves the recognition.

I have heard through other Africans how Haile Selassie was not accepted. Accepted? Because Ethiopia was imperialist? I realized Shaebia/TPLF/OLF/Derg/EPRP who are fringes of Anti Ethiopians supported by outsiders particularly Egypt, Arabs and some West worked hard to spread false information about Haileselassie. In fact every where you read in the formation of AU, you don’t see Haile Selassie’s name. Isn’t proof enough the hard work of Haile Selassie and his Ministers to form OAU by collaborating with other African leaders? They are trying to destroy history and Haile Selassies name because it be littles TPLF and most of all they didn’t want to disappoint Shaebia who resent Haile Selassie. No matter how much you disagree past history, history will not be erased even we can’t make Derg disappear despite we resented it, even after TPLF is gone, history will be there. I have a feeling they will not have a good hisotry.

Also, I might add that Haile selassie is not “black” enough I guess.

why are our opposition groups follow the example of Monorovia and Casablanca group and unite. Does Ethiopia now has any symbol figure who has respect of both opposition groups who can play the role of HIM between the Monorovia and Casablanca group. It is very unfortunate that symbol figures are all eliminated by DERG and WOYANE and now Ethiopia is left with killers and looters – MUJAS/WEEDS even worse parasitic weeds who thrives on the suffering of the Ethiopian people. It is a great paradox that all killers of DERG, EPRP, MEISON etc congregate in DC and philosophize while Ethiopians are languishing under woyane state terror.

    it is woyanes conspiracy.

The entire Africa and 3rd world peoples, especially the intellectuals, are being systematically and heinously mislead to be immersed, trapped and stuck in this wrong framing or paradigm-setup of Western Anglo-American capitalists system. And hence we are becoming a cart horse that sees only one direction to the front. And hence like wise Emperor Haileselasie and Ghadafi are also being scrutinized and judged according to this erroneous paradigm-setup. And hence we need paradigm-shift.

I have a problem with the question, “Who is the founder of OAU?” It is not like, the question, “Who invented the light bulb?” It is not an individual effort. The concept of a united Africa had always been in the minds of many black leaders worldwide. Some, like Dubois vehemently articulated it and overtly struggle for it. Evidently, Dr. Kwame, I believe, was one of those great leaders. But to attribute foundership solely to him would be a slap in the face of the recent history that some of have had the privilege of witnessing it. Being the only independent country in colonial Africa, like an island in the ocean, Ethiopia was an inspiration for all peoples of the world who lived under the rule of colonialism, slavery, racial segregation, apartheid, etc. Certainly, the Adowa victory become both the embodiment and impetus of the movements and struggles of the day. Haile Selassie’s Ethiopia contributed to Africa’s independence struggle morally, materially, politically and militarily. Apparently, Mengistu inherited and rightly adopted the Emperor’s policy as he supported the anti-apartheid and anti-colonial movements in southern Africa including Zimbabwe. Indeed, “Ghana provided weapons, as did Ethiopia to freedom fighters, especially in southern Africa.” A pilot friend of mine used to tell me he had been transporting thousands of Ethiopian soldiers by night to fight along side the freedom fighters,ZANU, ZAPU, etc. in the late 1970′s.

I say the question should be, Who are the founders of OAU? They are many. Among them are the 32 leaders who represented their nations.

Thank you, dear Kefyalew for your correction of our great recent history. The current leaders should “man-up” to heed to your correction.
    God bless Africa.

We can say that the African Union is nothing but a group of corrupted African leaders organized for their evil common interest to stick up on power for ever, as well as to distort the great leaders of Africa that play a great role in the struggle against colonialism, such as king H/Sellassie of Ethiopia. History can’t be abolished, instead remains forever. The trees in front of the ECA are the true witnesses for the first founders of African Union. One of these trees holds the name of Emperor H/Selassie.What we understand is,the new African union hall is already hijacked by Weyane, means the rest African Union leaders are bowing to dictator and tyrant Meles.Weyane is by nature a shameful party that stand against Ethiopia and its people. The world knows that Ethiopia( as none colonized great country of the world), plays a great role in supporting and training of African freedom fighter like Mandela and others. Most of African scholars and innocent Africans have great admire in king H/ Selassie that plays in the struggle against the slave trade and the end of African colonialism. This statue of the African Union doesn’t reflect the true sons of Africa that plays a great role to unite Africa, except it exposes the current Union members are simply a speaking tool under the leadership of dictator Meles. God Bless Ethiopia.

History could sometimes be a contested ground. It was said that it was Seku Toure of Guinean who wanted to put the Monrovia and Casablanca groups together. He requested to meet the Emperor (he met him in Asmera) and asked him to convene a meeting of the two groups.Ethiopia has no full Foreign Minister at the time and the Prime Minister (who was a Foreign Minister before) assembled half a dozen or or more people (most of them with legal background) to work on a Charter. The draft Charter is said to have come from a Columbian jurist. Some of those involved are still alive. It is important that at this historical juncture that they tell us what happened. Sadly Ethiopian have difficulty of facing the truth. Look at the many “memoires” written which are sometimes bare-faced lies and most often do not mention anything of situations they were heavily involved. Maybe we should search the archives of Seku Toure, Nkrumah and others to come nearer to the truth.Having said that there is no doubt in my mind that the Emperor was the central figure for the establishment of the OAU.
If there is a statue to be erected his should be the first one. Even Nkrumah would have not objected to that.

I will have to add my 2 cents in this discussion.

The writer and some of us have overlooked the basic significance of the occasion.

As Keffyalew and others pointed out Haile Selassie’s regime paved the way and made it easier to follow however, you all seem to lose track that, it was a monumental accomplishment for the Meles regime to keep AU in Addis Ababa. Yes indeed!

Meles was able to keep AU in Addis by capitalizing on the contributions of both HIM & Mengistu towards Africa’s independence struggle. He confidently and forcefully argued by embracing the former Ethiopian leaders stand on Africa’s liberation struggle and was able to beat Qaddafi in his own game.

The other point to notice also is OAU is transformed to AU. Basically the Monrovia group concept is what has become the ideal today. Nkrumah is the semblance of that ideal but just happens to be one of the founders of OAU.

Having said that, we should give credit where credit is due. The Emperor was like Abebe Bikila in the Marathon and Meles followed suit like Mamo Welde and others.

If you have not seen Meles’s argument to keep AU in Addis please do.

In many instances I heard people who were members of the TPLF say that Aboy Sebhat was the godfather of Melles Zenawi who protected him from falling until he succeeded to be at the helm of the organization.

Recently VOA brought both Aboy SAebhat and DR. Aregawi Berhe to give thier views on a book written by a certain Amare that belittles our history in general and our heroes in particular.

First I want ot thank Dr. Aregfawi for his matured nationalist answers he gave to the question or suggestions both men were asked. I think it is time now all Tigrayans to wake up and stand in unision to resist the sons and daughters of colonial remenants who are not leaving any stone unturned to erase our vivid history. It is not the matter of attacking or degrading individual heroes but attacking and degrading our history, because those heroes whom they trying to defame are the makers, shakers and movers of this history.

Dear compatriots the imprisonment of some unlawful people in Saudi Arabia have attracted the attention of many. But, the worst is the game those TPLF remenants who are in power playing to create divissions among the different Ethiopian ethnic groups that can lead to anarchy and it is the responsiblity of each and every Ethiopian regardless of his political affilation to confront and fight them by standing together for his pride and unity.

If they think that their stand for the separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia has succeeded and their ethnic flags are flying high let us prove to them that the blood of unity and brotherhood is inside of the present day Abysinian as it is was in our forefathers.

    Thanks and best regards.

No doubt Haileselassie played a vital rule on the formation of OAU and actually help a lot of freedom fighters even he trained Nelson Mandela in Ethiopia but what is the use now? We Ethiopians are the one who through him out from his thrown and humiliated him first and Africans ignored Hailessalssie now and woaynes also did their part, we have to remember he is Amaarrraa which Amarras are Woaynes nightmare if woaynes have a good mind they should do something about it but they did not do nothing.. They are bastards!!

I’m so glad the kings statue was not erected because be it OAU or AU is now hijacked by weyanes pimps and prostitutes. Haile Selasie might had his own short falls to Ethiopia or other African countries but not to the level of the scam backs of weyanes. These creatures are the most fealthiest and the face of shame not only to Ethiopians but to the whole continent of Africa.

This is about history. The history makers are thirty two signatory head-of-states. What current African leaders need to do is to erect thirty one more statues along with Dr. Kwame Nukrumah, or remove the current statue and replace it with relief busts of the thirty two founders. Singling out one individual is not symbolizing unity, it is rather divisonary.
Send petition to Dr. Ping or his would be replacemnt.

HIM surely deserves a monument of his own. But let us remove weyanne first and we will build a big statue of him outside of the main gates of the new AU building. We will also make sure to build it the middle of a roundabout to make sure that the dictators pay tribute to him by driving around it before entering the premises.

The disgusting TPLF/Weyane/Meles are making AU as their property as if they contributed to the formation of AU as a result they act like without their approval to anything nothing gets passes, meaning, Africans what they used to think of Ethiopia/Haile Selassie has dramatically changed. They are silent or are saying HIM was imperialist. Why sudden of change? Nothing but the coordinated effort coming from TPLF/Shaebia/OLF. They are struggling so hard to be recognized in the world and in Africa but no matter how much they struggle they are haunted by the Ghost of HIM, they are living in his shadow and that is why they would rather destroy themselves and the country than giving in, being proud of or accepting and embracing HIM. Because through him also they should also feel proud and in fact make Ethiopia even more the beacon of hope. While other Africans are recognizing this diminishing name of HIM, they are quickly working hard to replace HIM, Ethiopia making their country more recognizable i.e: Ghana (Which they recognize Nkrumah why are these savages TPLF/Meles/OLF are not recognizing HIM?) Oh that is right, desprite their differences, Ethiopia should have been colonized that is what they are saying, Ethiopia should not have been part of the founding fathers of League of Nations, what they are saying is that Ethiopia should have been like other African nations to be little itself and not participate in the world of leaders in the world especially in the West. They are saying why did Ethiopia was acting like the West, seeing other countries especially the rich countries at its equal rather than subordinate. HIM participated in many events (yes, we know there was poverty)by showing Ethiopia is also leader in the world. The self hating TPLF/OLF/Shaebia resented this. Now they are working so hard to be this leader. Wow, it takes wisdom, pride, non revengeful, to be such a leader and HIM has shown that. These groups need to be enlightened to be his equal. Yes, yes, I know there were problems under him as well.

Considering what AU has become today, it is a place where looters, mafias etc, gather so it is just an office to them. So I am glad HIM will not be part of it in a way. It is house of big bellies part time workers for the rich countries, a bunch of uncle Toms. And HIM would have none of it today.

God bless him, Nelson Mandela knew who Meles and Issays were and he had denounced the condemnation of HIM by these peoples. Nelson knew what they were/are up to that is why he never visited Ethiopia or Eritrea. The so called OLF, while HIM had also Oromo blood in him, these groups joined TPLF and Shaebia.

Do you get it? The reason why HIM’s statue is not erected because they are denouncing Ethiopia’s independence. The world should not be reminded that Ethiopia was not colonized. Such propoganda serves 2 purpose. One, TPLF does not want to show that Eritrea was colonized therefore, Shaebia does not want to be reminded of Ethiopia’s independence while Eritrea has been colonized by Italy. The reason also could be Eritrea, Tigray and Oromia consider “Ethiopia” as a colony, colony? of Ethiopia therefore HIM should not be recognized as true person who struggled for independence of the rest of Africans. Of course Eritrea will work hard to destroy HIM, but then they were enjoying very much the economy of Ethiopia under him. Well they must love Derg today for getting rid of him, oh wait, but then they hate Derg also. Eritrea was not complaining while under HIM but today they spread propoganda about him, that is why this contradiction indicates fabrication of Ethiopia’s and HIM’s history. The second purpose is, since Meles and Isayas both work for West’s and some Arab’s or Asian’s interest in return they remain in power by iron feast, the idea of having an African country as free from colony will empower the rest of Africa and it will hinder the soon-coming neocolonization of Africa therefore the two may have agreed to bury HIM’s name or Ethiopia’s independence in the past.

Are there Ethiopians when there are misinformations on Ethiopia or past leaders to quickly refute by writing articles on many information sources, such as BBC, African sites, Europe and America? For instance such information as Ato Kefyalew indicated should be written with backed documentation, making it even more professional, journalist-like article. We seem to accept misinformation.

Can you stop misinformation? Meles and Issays were negotiation with Qaddafi to transfer AU to Libya you sick .. it was other African leaders who refused. What an ironic, it was other African leaders who were more patriotic than Meles ever was. Issayas was working hand and glove with Qaddafi to get the AU transfered to Libya because having AU in Ethiopia over shadows for the plan to make Eritrea like Singapore. You will do anything to somehow link Meles to “good” thing but truth come out. But publicly Meles acts like he is patriotic.

For your information, HIM does not have a direct Amara blood. He is more of Oromo, Gurage When he takes leadership, because he is following the Menilik throne which represented from the North, particularly Amara but Menilik is even half Oromo. So we have to becareful, even though the laid out system was by Amara system which is actuall a combination of Amara and Tigray, the leaders Menilik and HIM did not have full Amara blood. Especially HIM that is why he was intermarrying his relatives and children with other ethnic groups such as Tigray, Amara and Oromo. He didn’t like the pro dominated Amara group who refused for his demand for land reform and to get rid of land for the bourgeoise ,but he had to in order to continue the leadership.

    The Eritrean one,

I hope you should include Shaebia also. The only difference you don’t like Weyane is because Weyane didn’t want to share the piece of pie. We know Shaebia/Eritrea wants to dominate the HOrn of Africa just like Weyane. The West is saying which one of you are uncle Tom’s so that you can rule the Honr of Africa.

Wow, in due respect to your opinion please read what I posted thoroughly. I have no problem as to who can be the dominant force in the horn of Africa but why did it has to be at the expense of innocent people of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djoubiti, and Kenya. I would like to see Ethiopia proseper as a land of 80 million population but it is sad to see this beautiful nation continues to become as a playgound of Legesse/Abebe/Melese and his boss Mebrahtu G/hiwot; it is sad how all the paedophiles are reining all over Ethiopia abusing the beautiful people/children; and it is also sad the majority of Ethiopians all over the world to call themselves Ethiopians as Ethiopia continues to be the symbol of hunger, starvation, uncle Tom’s Toy of the horn of Africa, and an open season for all conquererors from Arabs to Indians.

Some of you do not know what you are talking about. Why can’t we agree on one thing. We are always writing stupid things not to get along. If we don’t agree we should agree to disagree. We ar discussing about a topic “who is the founder of the OAU” and you are dancing all over the world. No need to mention anyother country except the founders. I would like to thank some for their civility but most are dim.

    Eritrean One,

Please don’t fool yourself. At least be honest. You keep talking about Ethiopia’s floss here in Ethio site, why don’t you focus on your site? Unless you are honest and discuss the role of Shaebia against Ethiopia stop fake crying for Ethiopia.

I think we agree that originator of the idea of African Union were the Casablanka and the Monrovia groups, not Haile Selassie. And yet, without the fatherly role played and a compromising spirit ushered by him, the charter that lead to the formation of OAU would not have been signed. Therefore, as far as the coming into being of OAU is concerned, there were 3 equally important forces. And these forces were the Casablanca force represented by Kuame, the Monrovia force represented by (?), and the somewhat neutral force represented by the King. During the meeting, if any of these forces did not play its role the way it did, there would have been no OAU. So I hope we agree on the need of a joint statue of three persons. And these 3 persons are 1) Kuame, 2)the leading and compromising figure from the Monrovia side (name ?), and 3)Haile Selasse.
