Ethiopia carries out attacks against Eritrea

March 15th, 2012 Print Print Email Email

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopian forces entered archrival Eritrea on Thursday and carried out what a government spokesman described as “a successful attack” against military posts.

Shimeles Kemal said Ethiopia launched the attack because Eritrea was training “subversive groups” that carried out attacks inside Ethiopia.

Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a border war from 1998 to 2000. Tensions have reignited between the countries in recent months.
No details about the military operations or any damage or casualties were immediately released.

The “Eritrea government has continued launching attacks at Ethiopia through its proxy groups. The attacks had continued. And the recent attacks against European tourists is one of the reasons for the retaliation,” Shimeles said.

Militants attacked European tourists from five nations traveling in Ethiopia’s arid north in January. Five tourists were killed and two were kidnapped. The two kidnapped German tourists have since been released.

Ethiopia blamed gunmen from Eritrea for the attack.

The attacks Thursday by Ethiopian forces took place about 10 miles (16 kilometers) inside Eritrea’s territory in areas called Gelakalay and Gimbina, Shimeles said. The Ethiopian forces have returned to Ethiopia, he said.

“Today’s measures do not constitute a direct military confrontation between the two countries. The Ethiopian defense force has entered into Eritrea and launched a successful attack against military posts that have been used to organize, finance and train the subversive groups,” Shimeles said.

Shimeles said it was unlikely that Eritrea would retaliate because it is “not in a position to launch a counter attack.”

Eritrea’s ambassador to the Addis Ababa-based African Union, Girma Asmerom, didn’t immediately respond to phone calls seeking comment.

The border war between the two countries killed about 80,000 people. Recent signs have pointed to growing tension in the region.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told the country’s parliament in April that his government would actively support Eritrean opposition groups to help topple that country’s regime. Ethiopia also blamed Eritrea for scheming bomb attacks on several targets in Addis Ababa during an African Union summit in January 2011.

Eritrea doesn’t receive foreign aid and is sanctioned by the U.N. because of human rights violations. U.N. reports have indicated that Eritrea has supported Somalia’s top militant group, the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab. Eritrea has denied those accusations.

At best this is a diversionary tactic. At worst this is a fight among two brothers. The other ethnic groups should not be involved in this. They will come together soon, be sure!

If this is a true report, Meles would not attack shabia unless he has received instructions from his pay masters in Europe or USA.

The weyanes are desperate to raise their hand on their borhters on the other side the Mereb. This is another gimmick that is gone be used as a diversion. People are dying in the street from hunger in Addis, instead feeding them the weyanes are bombing empty spaces in the backyard of their cousin.

The killing of Ethiopians inside and outside of Ethiopia is not enough. So Meles and his boss Mebrahtu G/hiwot have to invent another way of finishing Ethiopians going to war with the Eritrean people. We hope there is no Ethiopian this time around that will shed blood to rescue Meles and his boss Mebrahtu G/hiwot.

Just remember what shabia is been doing to Ethiopians and it is time to pay the price and it is just the beginning . I also believe that this revenge is not about two brothers rather it is about eliminating bad actor from the region and bring domacratic government in the horn. By the way, who is to denay that the mad dog ( issues) is the cancer of the horn. So, he must go soon or later!

The mad dog happens to be Meles Zenawi who is trading with Ethiopian blood. To paint Isaias different from Meles is denying the horrendous crimes that Meles is perpetrating in the heart land of Ethiopia. A mafia boss should not have any sympathy and the Ethiopian army needs to take care of him. yes he is surrounded by Tigrean nhigher officers and it would not be easy, but it vis a solemn duty for ant army member to take care of this dwarf.

Astra has hit the nail on the head when he said it is a diversionary tactic, if not a strategy, that have been going on since the debacle in 2005 election. This no different than the case with the invasion of Somalia to divert attention from election debacle and the incarceration of tens of thousands of CUD supporters and the CUD leadership with a parliament of weak loyalist opposition parties that could not produce a vote to stop the Somalia invasion, which are later reduced to nothinigness in the 2010 election, and no voice in the current set up of the parliament to be decided by a parliament filled with one party of TPF/eprdf, which even if Tigrai-Harena/Medrek/fdd/fdre won a sizable seat, it would have formed a bicameral chamber of parliament on either side with ethnic agenda, mantaining ethnic fereralism, secessionism and totalirianism in tact as the constitutional frame work, leaving on the periphery those parties with national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item has to do with liberty, freedom and equality to have precedence over the existing ethnic and secessionist rights.

While the burning issue for the silent majority is to attain freedom from autocratic rule, and ethnocratic rule to say the least from totalirinism, so they can exercise free market capitalism and democracy, relief from humantarian violations, this invasion may be considered another diversionary tactic, to probably do a collateral damage on the liberation movements and unecessary blood shed on both sides to no avail and waste the military budget that is supported by the budgetary support, among others by the west and the public tax money.

Once again, Ethiopians are giving the benefit of a doubt to tyrant Meles, this is bigger than diversionary tactics, the killing machine Meles is on his way to achieve his life time goal of being the President of Greater Tigrea. For the last 20 years Meles has been giving the land of Ethiopia to foreigners, hundreds of thousands locked up, tens of thousands have been gunned down, billions of dollars have been looted, Coffee, gold and other Ethiopia’s natural resources have been stolen and owned by Azeb and the rest of TPLF and their close allies, etc… does a leader that love his/her country would do all these kinds of harm to the country and its people, I guess not! I hope and pray I am wrong on this, but my gut feeling is that, Meles and his TPLF puppets are on their way to overthrow Essays and occopy Eritrea to create Greater Tigrea and leave Ethiopia broke and divided.

Yes,yes Meles’s last ambition is to everthrow Isaias and replace with a regime, which is bossed and controlled by him;if this dream comes true;although,we pray it won’t,it is really, really going to be the real end of Ethiopia.Guys, make no mistake,it is better to fight zinawi tooth and nail now than bitterly to be sorry for eternity. This is not a uh and forget it thing;it is a very, very serious matter that we have to act and work on it.

When I was a young boy at home, I remember fights arranged by certain folks in that small town to settle a rivalry between two well muscled up bulls. The bulls are taken to a flat and open area and aroused up to lock horns and fight. There would be two or four judges experienced in conducting such fights between rival bulls. They knew when to set them apart when one of them is a clear winner and made sure none of them was mortally wounded. But if these two bulls happened to cross paths in the absence of people one or both of them can be seriously injured and would end up on the butcher’s chopping block. In any case, the nightmare would be over. These two neighborhood bullies have been tormenting the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia for decades now. I would not discourage them to stop their brawl. Let them duke it out. Some of you may try to tell me the accomplishments these two hoodlums achieved in the areas of the economy. Oh Whoopie Doo !!! There has been a march in the economic transformation process since the demise of the feudal system that started in 1974, It was unstoppable even by the so-called scientific socialism launched by the Derg. Was the ruthless butcher Mengistu not forced to renounce socialism in the 80′s after butchering hundreds of thousands of citizens(most of them extra-judicially) for the cause of rubbish socialism? Wasn’t he? ‘Socialism or death!!’ we were told!!! So don’t try to tell me credit this and credit that. These two bullies should be thrown to the abyss of the slammer or let them kill each other!!! I have reserved a front row seat to watch these two bulls fight to their deaths from a safe distance. In fact, I am whistling and shouting a battle cry to arouse their beasty nature!!! They are both animals. Hey Meles!!! Go!!! Go!!!! Hey you Isaias!!! You are a chicken!!! Do you let this midget wonder around telling everyone how he slapped you in the face and kicked your ass? Where are your messengers you have been incubating for decades just for the purpose of seeding eternal animosity between the people of our beloved country? They are good for parades only uhh? This midget just told us he kicked your ass!!! Do something about it!!!
And this is for the oppositions from both countries!!! It is time to cast 2ndry differences aside and come up a program and constitution that respects individual rights above anything else wherein no one will be telling me I am not an Ittu first as an individual and a brother bound by an unfettering fraternity with my Afar, Somali, Amhara, Sidamo, Anuaks and many other brothers and sisters in the same house we have all accepted as our common home. As far as my individual human and democratic rights are protected I have no problem calling myself an Ethiopian. No problem now and no problem for ever!!! As long as these fundamental rights are not deemed untouchables, calling myself an Oromian will be a no no. Our people and I are much smarter now than ever. After all, isn’t the age of awakening more than 5 centuries old already? Don’t even try to wise up with me!!!! No more hurling derogatory names toward each other. And if your organization was involved in some kind of homicide or genocide, you better come out clean now!!! At least come out in the open about it and say you are very sorry and genuinely contrite instead of justifying the callous acts. The writing is very clear on the wall!!! By what authority were killings of unarmed civilians committed? The answer is none whatsoever!!! The same also goes to all those political groupings that passed death sentences on civilians without a justified due process. You should all come out clean asking for forgiveness and don’t try to broad brush these acts. They are crimes against unarmed civilians whose fate was decided in their absence and on whims of desire to kill. If you honestly contrite now I guarantee you that our people will once again demonstrate their magnanimity. And Like I said before, they are much smarter than before!!!!!

First and foremost, I strongly believe even Mengestu was brainwashed by some of Isayas ideology as OLF and ONLF. Here is what I think was the plan of the two evil blood cousins: While Ethiopians were dealing with the other bloodsucker Mengestu, Issayas and Meles were planning out their goal how to divide Ethiopians by destroying the Ethiopiawinet spirit and demoralizing Ethiopians. After Meles take over Ethiopia, then give Eritria its independence with every centimeter of the seashore and a gift of a billion dollar of poor Ethiopians hard earned money. Then, continue looting 80 million Ethiopian tax payer money, the aids money, coffee, gold and other Ethiopia’s natural resources and build and expand Tigrea province by taking land from Gondar and Wollo and give Sudan thousands of acres of Ethiopia’s land from Gondar by leaving the Ethiopians empty handed with no place to go to demoralize their spirit and weaken the Amharas. Sell some more hundreds of thousands acres of Ethiopia’s Gambela land to foreign billionaires for dirt cheap and once again leave the people empty handed with no place to go and if the people refuse to leave and demand to get their land back, gun them down with no hesitant and demoralize the people. At the end, Eritriea and Tigrea will join hands and be one. But, in the middle of their plan, the quarrel began between the two evil cousins. So, now, we are witnessing who is going to be the ruler of the joint province of Eritrea and Tigrea. I believe, Issayas is one heartless racist who has heart of Adolf Hitler. Issayas trained and brainwashed his cousin Meles to be one of the most hateful and cruel man that is worse than Hitler himself.

After reading all the comments it is funny to knot that you are the odd one out!I guess you must be one of those who is beneffiting from Mlles and Co. misadventure, but make my word the Amhara has done it before and now the agames are doing it, but no matter what the truth will prevail and Ethiopia is decending to be another Somalia, it sounds hawkish comment but it is the rout Melles is taking.

I salute, Itu Aba Farda for anecdotal story and his recommendation for all factions to come up with a program and a constitution (a program with a common goals with strategies for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality with stategies to achieve those goals,to acqire freedom of the individual whereas those free individuals draft a constitution with individual freedom, liberty and equality above ethnic and secessionist rights as the centerpiece. Whreas if the individual rights are respected the ethnic rights follow through, but not vice versa) that respects individual rights above anything else (over ethnic and secessionist rigts?).

Try to free your mind from Essayas and Meles’ ideology. Which Amhara leader ever kicked out Ethiopians from their land and sold their land to foreigners, which Amhara leader gave every inch of the Ethiopian port and left Ethiopia landlocked, looted the country, incarcerated hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and tortured them, gunned down countless number of Ethiopians in every province? Try to compare Apple to Apple, my friend. So far, not even one leader has ever been as cruel, coldblooded and a heartless killer as Meles that has controlled the country, looted and sold the country. Even the other evil Mengestu that slaughtered so many of our young and old patriotic Ethiopians, doesn’t come close to the cruelty of Meles. Essays has done so much damage to our country by brainwashing non Amhara Ethiopians with his own made up stories to divide Ethiopians and create animosity towards Amharas, and left Ethiopians with the evil man Meles that Esayas trained and groomed to be worse than himself.
