The displaced Ethiopians. By Yilma Bekele

March 29th, 2012 Print Print Email Email

I am sure we are all familiar with what is known as the ‘melting pot’ concept when it comes to describing how America functions. The term is a metaphor ‘for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous, the different elements “melting together” into a harmonious whole with one common culture.

The concept was popularized in the 1900 with the influx of immigrants from all over. It was challenged in 1970’s with some questioning the idea of total meld and wanted to preserve cultural differences as valuable part of a civil society and proposed an alternative metaphor the ‘mosaic or salad bowl’ concept. This term has come to dominate the Canadian experience. It proposes the mix of ethnic groups, languages and cultures that can harmoniously co-exist. It advocates multiculturalism.

Both approaches have managed to build a robust and prosperous society. Over the weekend I had a medical issue and went to the hospital. I, the patient is an immigrant from Ethiopia. My admitting nurse was another Ethiopian. The nurse that took my vitals was from Nigeria. The person who took my x-ray was from Eritrea. My emergency room doctor was a white American. The individual who took me thru the discharge process was a female Hispanic immigrant. The hospital functioned like a well-oiled machine.

I was impressed. It made me see how the US has managed to become such a big powerhouse. There is plenty that needs to change but it is obvious the system is based on a solid ground of willingness to accommodate change while not losing a common vision of one country one people.

It did not take me long to come back to ground. My homeland came to jar me back to reality. The ‘ethnic cleansing’ in southern part of my country was a reminder that all is not well on the home front. The term ‘ethnic cleansing’ is a loaded term. I am not invoking it lightly. But it to so aptly describes the plight of our citizens that happen to be ‘Amhara’ and their current tribulations. The Benji Maji Zone Administration has seen it fit to expropriate their land and property and drive them out of their homes. Go back to your Kilil they said. Today they are refugees in their own country. The actual term is ‘internally displaced.’

“Internally displaced” is a strange concept to grasp. How could you be a refugee in your own land? In an emerging Democracy like Ethiopia anything is possible. The government led by TPLF (Tigrai Peoples Liberation Movement) is the Party in charge. When they took power they were not into the concept a ‘melting pot’ nor did they appreciate the idea of a ‘salad bowl.’ Our ḥizbāwī weyānē ḥārinet tigrāy ሕዝባዊ ወያኔ ሓርነት ትግራይ leaders were enamored by the concept of ‘Apartheid’. Building enclaves was their brilliant solution. The plight of the Amhara’s is Apartheid in practice. That is what Meles Zenawi is constructing in Ethiopia. Separate disjointed entities at war with each other while his single ethnic based party fans the hate flame.

Do you think I am being an alarmist? Do you think I am falling into the trap of ethnic identification? I do not think so. If people are forced to flee due to their ethnicity be it in Benji Maji, Gambella, Sarajevo or Kigali you have to call it what it is ‘ethnic cleansing.’ The Serbian Military’s attempt to drive Moslems out of Sarajevo was defined as practicing ‘ethnic cleansing.’ Hutus targeted Tutsis and the blood bath was judged as an ugly attempt at ‘ethnic cleansing.’ During the border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea both countries carried out limited form of ‘ethnic cleansing’. May I remind you some of us showed total indifference while a few cheered. Ethnic cleansing is an International crime. It is crime against humanity. What has happened to the Amhara’s of Benji Maji Zone is ‘ethnic cleansing.’ Their only crime is being an Amhara and finding them selves in the wrong Apartheid designated ‘Home Land”.

This abhorrent crime is committed by the TPLF party, which is led by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. They set such system in place. They designed it. Some are claiming the TPLF party has gone rouge and become the party of one family. I beg to differ. The TPLF was born a monster, grew up to be a monster and will die as a monster. It has never ever done anything that could be seen as a positive contribution to the people of Tigrai in particular and the people of Ethiopia in general.

Kilil is not a new idea. It was copied from the book of the Nationalist Party of South Africa. The White people’s party. Their creation of the ‘Apartheid’ system set up ten Bantustans or homeland for Black people. It kept the Blacks apart. It made them strangers to each other. There was no Black South African but an ethnic based homeland citizen. Leaders like Chief Buthelezi of the great nation of Kwa Zulu were reduced to serving the White masters at the expense of their people. Exile some, corrupt a few and bully the rest was the hallmark of Apartheid. Kilil is the son of Apartheid. In today’s Ethiopia Kilil defines who you are and that of being an Ethiopian is secondary. Benji Maji is the outcome of Kilil at work. You area a citizen of your Kilil not your Country.

TPLF’s system is working like a charm. The folks displaced from Benji Maji are living proof. The cultivation of hate has made us mistrust each other. The insistence on separate Kilil’s has caused us plenty of civil strife. No place is immune from this sickness. Even places of higher learning such as the University and Kilil based Colleges are the hot bed of ‘ethnic’ clashes. I am writing about it. It has become our everyday experience. We are in the process of becoming strangers to each other. The meaning of being an Ethiopian is being deflated, downsized, given negative connotations and made something to hide out of shame.

Why some people in leadership do that should be left to psychologists, social scientists and historians to explain. Our problem is here and now. We are all affected by this devaluation of a beautiful proud country. We are not the first to be under this type of calamity. Look Iraq was once a proud nation. Today Iraqis avoid Iraq. Syria is entering that zone of madness on a national scale. Ethnic strife is the common thread between the two. Kilil is the breeding ground for ‘ethnic strife’. The TPLF party is the fertilizer.

Are you inoculated against this virus? What do you think when you hear of Benji Maji? Upset? Depressed? Confused? Hope less? You see the current leaders of Ethiopia are free to do what they want. The only way to stop them is by showing them there are consequences to their action. There is a price to pay for bad deeds. The people organized around Timret are building an all-inclusive Front as a solid foundation for our future Ethiopia. ESAT has managed to be our voice. Andenet is still operating under dire circumstances. All these groups and organizations are helping the people of Benji Maji by doing their share so there will be no more Benji Maji’s. Change will not happen with out involvement. We can work together as one to create a “melting Pot’ or a ‘Salad Bowl’ or continue on building Apartheid. It is up to you. Show me rather than tell me.

    History repeating!!!!

Ethnic cleansing by woyane was done village by village and now it is nation by nation. That was why Mr. Obang Metho once said, “You are evicted from Ethiopia”.

“First they cam for the Amharas to evict them, threw them down the cliff face, cut the breasts of their women, and stabbed their pregnant women to death. I did not speak up, because I was not an Amhara. Then they came for the Gambellans, I did not speak up because I was not a Gambellan. Then they came for …”.

Finally, “They came for me and by that time no one was left to speak up”.

    By Pastor Niemoller

“First they came for the Communists”

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

To alleviate humanitarian, economic, political and now according literature review by Professor Alemayehu G. Mariam environmental crises, the focus need to be on dismantling ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism built into the constitution of TPLF/eprdf regime supported by the teletafi parties and loyalist opposition parties with ethnic agenda and the constituion. These three ideologies are causes for a diclaming vide and rule policy, for ethnic rule rather than democratic rule, the creation of exploitation, political and economic strangle hold of the country by TPLF and TPLF and TPLF affiated enterprises and foreign corporations, ethnic cleansing against certain ethnic groups and blaming CUD for the initiating interhamwe over the Tigrai as well as free market capitalism and democracy, privat ownership of land and businesses, by saying “Country not ready to liberalise key sections yet” in the words of the Prime Minister, and clamping down the silent majority of Ethiopians for individual freedom, liberty and equality ahead ethnic and secessionist rights, which are also nominal.

Therefore, protests of also sorts must be linked to dismantle ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism to induce free market capitalism with mixed economy and democracy based on individual freedom, liberty and equality and resorting to the original provinces where individuals of different ethnic groups find their niche in a competitve and cooperative manner in each provincial states, rather than the current division of seven of nine/80 ethnic groups of fantacy lands according to which the current party organizations are alignes as TPLF/eprdf and OPDF/EFDF/fdre, whose basic platform is ethnic agenda, rather than national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last itme refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality by emulating the constitution of the United States.

Yilma wrote well. But one sentence of his got my attention more than most, and I did not like it. He wrote “in an emergng democracy like Ethiopia anything is possible.” Really? Is democracy really “emerging” in Ethiopia? I see not. In fact, EPDRF believes Ethiopians are not up to the task of upholding democracy. That is why the new infatuation we see about everything Chinese being noble. Maybe Yilma has not intended his sentence to be inferred as I did. Is it really my problem of understanding the sentence the way I did. I do not think so.

How is it,, I wonder, that there are no Somalis or Afar or Kebattas or others settled not settled in Amhara kilil? Why is it always Amharas that have settled in other regions or kililes?

Until we all see each other as equal citizens and understand the root problem, your article is all empty talk.

the question is why should poor Ethiopian peasant farmers be evicted from their homes and villages, to make way for foreign land lords coming from china, india, arab countries , pakistan, indonesia, thailand.

Is this not the case in Gambella region? the region is now being controlled by Karuti and Alamoudin. parts of the fertile land on Wester Ethiopia from Gondar to Gambella has been handed over to sudan. this is the injustice we are against.

Listening to the German Amharic Radio on ER of the plight of the expelled Amara is very distressful.

I can’t imagine the Meles Government not feeling the same way about the situation however, the regional government didn’t say anything yet we have to hear what they have to say and how the federal government looks at the atrocity before we make wild conclusion as Yelma is doing.

I don’t see any sighting of document by Yelma to jump to his wild conclusions.

I don’t see how it serves the existing government of Meles to condone such idiotic atrocities.

I have to say Meles would say the same thing Obama said that the nation needs to do some “soul searching” over the shooting death of unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida. He went on to say “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon”

Azeb would say same of the children in the ware houses in my opinion. Those can be her children.

So let us not jump to conclusions.

    …they came…
You can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep. Miriam knows it is only the Amhara who are being evicted. To ask why they were settled there at first place is to deny their citizenship right, to dismiss the report, and to justify the deportation. If she listen the full report by DW she would hear how they were settled by the government. Miriam must know Amhara’s land was forcefully taken by Tigray and Sudan.

This could be the preview of the next Ethiopia. The TPLF had been preaching this for years and it was only in Gambella that people from other parts of the country were not expeled because of their ethnicity. It finally cost Gambellians dearly when in December of 2003 those of highlanders collaborated with TPLF Government and carried out genocide against the land owners, the Anuaks. Imagine if they were expeled but there would come a time when Gambellians would be forced to do the unthinkable for their own survival as people and culture and that is what we all should be thinking about know. Gambellians have started thinking and asking themselves like, how can we live with our brothers killers in the future? What would prevent them to do it again and that time it would be total extermination.

Miriam is typical retarded leba weyane. unless the blood she is sacking is turning her demented, she knows why the Amharas were settled in the area to start with. she also knows about the eviction plan. the banda shouldn’t be allowed to be here. Ethiopian should be allowed to live anywhere they wish in their country. what is good for the Tigres should be good to all Ethiopians. Who is controlling all the business in the South and in south west? who is evicting the the southern nations? who is taking over their land. dedeb banda miriam answer this questions to your self before you open your filthy weyane mouth.

We can talk about the past but the present policy is a Developmental State. The aspiration and practice of the present government is towards that goal.

Therefore Meles & co.are bound to oppose ethnic division of any kind because it stands against their aspiration. There is no reason for Yelma to compare our situation with old South Africa. Yelma is being opportunist by muddling things up and creating confusion instead of opposing by putting up the hard work necessary telling us what is wrong with a developmental state of such states as Ethiopia. He knows that is not easy.

You can’t write/compare Gambela resettlement program with the present issue of Amara expulsion from a region because the former is done for the good of the scattered community to benefit from the progress of the 21 century; that is off course contrary to some Europeans and their lackeys dislike of keeping us in the wild for them to observe as in nature.

I am glad you sensed the danger looming large in Ethiopia because of ethnic based politics. That has been recognized by dissents like Yilma for at least two decades now. You said “Therefore Meles & co.are bound to oppose ethnic division of any kind because it stands against their aspiration.” That is where you got it wrong. Meles and Co are not nationalist, who ever you might think the Co are. They are ethnisist. That is why they lost in the election ballot in 2005 when they were competing aganist Ethiopian nationalist parties. Note that the dictatorial politics in what you called Developmental State does not allow not only fair economics but also free judiciary systems to operate. The displaced Amhara will not see their day in court to seek justice, as the court is in full service of the dictator political apparatus. There is no political separation between the state and federal as you want us to believe. This dislocation decision is made directly from higher echelon of Meles and Co. If that was not the case, why do you think we didn’t hear any comment from the Amhara killil? These are supposedly to be Amhara citizens, to use Meles words.

The resettlement in Gambella is not done to benefit the Gambellians. You may not know what is the Government is doing or you ignored it because it is not your land and culture that is being destroyed. We Gambellians know very well that it is Ethiopian unfinished project of forced assimilation to put Ethiopian face on Gambella’s land. Gambella is the land that was stolen by Ethiopia on October 15, 1956 by the help of British and Sudan. We had lived free for centuries before those who said we can not lead ourselves came and colonized us. I do not think for even one second that Gambellians were created to be owned by the Abyssianians who themselves are uncivilized. The uncivilized claiming to civilize the uncivilized is crime. I would tell you this, Gambella is not part of Ethiopia, was not and is not going to be Ethiopian forever. There will come a time when the colonizers would go home and untill then stay tune.@Dawi

Here you are basically closer in agreeing with the following what Yelma described however, in your case you want to follow Eritrea’s model.

“In today’s Ethiopia Kilil defines who you are and that of being an Ethiopian is secondary. Benji Maji is the outcome of Kilil at work. You area a citizen of your Kilil not your Country.”

As Yelma opposes & advocates for one Ethiopia contrary to your view , the Meles Dictatorship challenges your position by giving you autonomy and time to think and decide.

IMO, the leasing of the land to commercial entities even gives you more time to think what you want to do and be, independent or not while educating your children with the tax base created.

When the Lease expires or by paying compensation you have the option of taking back the land and time to think of whether being part of a larger community or separate is beneficial to your community. These things are easier to figure out with full stomach and some education.

The Meles Dictatorship now is tackling and dealing with fundamental economics of the country and everything else is secondary.

Ethnic politics is not new; the National Question is what bogged down the Ethiopian Student movement at home and abroad in the past and even now. EPRP took a more radical stand than MESON then however, Woyane upped the ante by indorsing colonial question.

In other words, they are all birds of the same feather.

The mother of the problem was the dismantling of the Federal government by Emperor Haile Selasie which gave birth to Eritrean arms struggle. The military regime of Mengestu tried to resolve it militarily. After Woyane was born and allied with EPLF the demise of the DERG took place.

What you are saying is Yelma probably supported EPRP’s stand 2 decades ago. So what? Meles & Co. aren’t any different than anybody else; they just took a short cut to Arat Kilo by the opportunist stand they took.

I have to assume that they have learned the hard way that coming to power by any means is not the answer to our problem. I think the Meles Dictatorship would like to rectify their mistake in the best way they can. That includes the former Woyanes like Seye & others.

The folks who won the election in 2005 were at each others throat right after that. So why do you want me to expect a better outcome from them?

When countries like ours are going through civil war, a Dictatorship can resolve the conflict in a more definite way than Democracies or fake elections. The Meles Dictatorship is IMO, playing that role now.

China, under the command of a strict Dictatorship that has open discretion on the economic policies of the country, has been implementing sustained institutional reforms towards promoting Foreign Direct Investments. This produced the improvement of more than 400MM Chinese citizens that moved from poverty to the mid class. Their GDP growth rate of 10% per year became one of the highest sustained Economic Growth Rate in the world.

I do not necessarily disagree with your assessment. It boils down to who to trust. I have not seen the slightest indication for me to trust the midget dictator. I do not believe he learned his lesson from the mess he created that could potentially disintegrate Ethiopia. Any country would do much better when it has a unifying power and when the government is trusted serving the entire nation. The midget dictator is not one of them. He has been instigating conflicts where there was none before. The rule of law is a complete joke. There are a lot of disenfranchised population, the dictator can not sustain his power for long time. Many are concerned that his action will result un-reversible damage to Ethiopia. If he was serious to do something about it, he should have worked rectify the ethnic division line he constructed through kililization and propagated through medias. Aha has got it right, for serious political solution, the dictator should start changing laws that encourage conflicts and divisions among ethnic groups, while he is still powerful. That would have made him more credible.

[DAWI], you scribbled something unintelligible to me as in below.

“Yelma is being opportunist by muddling things up and creating confusion instead of opposing by putting up the hard work necessary telling us what is wrong with a developmental state of such states as Ethiopia. He knows that is not easy.”

What is this mantra of your ‘developmental state’tht you are obligated to rehearse and rehash in this forum? The issue is being considered is this -the TPLF cabal is internally displacing none Tigraian Ethiopians. That is the issue here. This government has been displacing hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians some because of conflicts as in the Oromos and Ethiopian Somalians, and others like the Gambelans and the Amharas are being displaced because the land they are living is needed for TPLF affiliates and foreign entities. I am not just making this up here is the human right watch record up to 2010 though there are many developments that took place since then as what this article is discussing above.

You are simply here to defend the indefensible regime. You may repeat you the lie ‘developmental state ‘several times a day. But it will never be true. This nonsense and so called the’d state’ is invented in the minds of depraved TPLF agents, and in reality it speaks the transfer of Ethiopian wealth to the business group and partners for big mission- EFFORT and Medroc. So please waist not our time to lecture us about your d state when in fact you are here to lie, confuse change the topic. You cannot deny the authenticity of this report then why are you trying to evade the issue by babbling of your d state, and what breed of creatures are you TPLfits?

I have long defined TPLF/eprdf as as a muliti-layer, hierarchical political model with ethnic agenda, with a focus on underminining, marginalising, and initiating a campaign of hate and hate crimes, ethnic cleansing against the Amhara and the Anuak in Gambela, spearheading the liberation movements with regards to oppression of nations and nationalities by the previous regimes to form a government of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism of seven of nine and/or eighty ethnic zones/Killil Mengistats. Add to that multi-layer the displacement of farmers from Gameblla region to make way for foreign corporation and for areas occupied by the three dam projects, to the least about intensified malaria mosquito infestation, and pending degradation of the ecosystem.

Now continuing with ethnic cleansing oppression by evicting 70,000 Amaharas form the Kill Zone in the South, which adds to the multi-layer and/or reinforces its initial campaign against the Amahara ethnic group in cold blood.

That is why the idea of uniting among all Ethiopians has to be over the national agenda and the strategies to achieve the goals for the national agenda to dismatle ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism and replace it with a constituion based on individual freedom, liberty and equality and resort to original autonomues provinces with various ethnic groups, whch elects a party that governs by the consent of the governed, and nobody is above the law.

“..You cannot deny the authenticity of this report …”

Looked at the sight you posted but found out you’re being selective. I didn’t find to be all “TPLF cabal .. internally displacing none Tigraian Ethiopians..” Others are as responsible for the atrocity.

[[..Since it was outlawed in 1994, the ONLF has engaged in low-intensity armed conflict with government forces. Human rights organisations, international NGOs, and the media have reported that both the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) and the ONLF have been responsible for human rights violations and abuses, and have used violence to intimidate the civilian population. ONLF attacks on police and military targets over the years have led to severe disruption and loss of lives (BBC News, 13 September 2010; Press TV, 18 August 2010; Bloomberg news, 19 June 2010). Inter-ethnic conflicts and government interference in the local politics of Gambella Region have reportedly contributed to ethnic conflicts and displacement there..]]

[[..In April 2010, inter-clan clashes among ethnic Nuer groups drove thousands from their homes. Local leaders accused the government of not doing enough to facilitate reconciliation or provide protection and livelihoods. In 2009, thousands of Ethiopian Jikany Nuer were displaced from their land by Sudanese Lou Nuer groups who had crossed into the Gambella Region of Ethiopia. According to Gambella regional authorities, some 38,000 IDPs from that incident still remained displaced in September 2010. Another 40,000 people were displaced in 2009 in Gambella as a result of recurrent clashes over land, natural resources and vendettas between local agro-pastoralist Nuer and the mainly agrarian Anuak (IRIN, 13 September 2010)…]]

    Response to disaster-induced displacement
[[..The government response to displacement as a result of natural disasters is more positive. A proposed disaster risk reduction policy has called for the mainstreaming of disaster risk management throughout government and greatly strengthened disaster management capacity at the highest levels of government. Debates continue within the government regarding the policy, and it is unclear if or when it will be adopted (ODI, June 2009). The policy has not been finalised or adopted as of December 2010…]]

Would you please answer your own question? Why do you think Amhara and Tigray Ethiopians are always settled in other parts of Ethiopia, particularly in the South and Southwest Ethiopia? Because it is their country and welcomed by their southern Ethiopian brothers and sisters. I can suspect where you are going with this question. No, don’t go there. It is not being Neftegna. Ethiopians going to USA or Europe and settling in diaspora doesn’t make us Neftegna.

You said, “Until we all see each other as equal citizens and understand the root problem, your article is all empty talk.” We accept our unity and the existence of our Nation as one indivisible Ethiopia where all citizens are equal. There should not be an issue. But the moment you raise a question about equality, it provokes doubt in people’s mind about your attitude towards the unity of Ethiopia. It leads me to conclude that the root problem is the misunderstanding of the essence of unity by part of the society who refuses to acknowledge their direct or indirect contribution to the confusion. What is your share in advancing that illusive equality? I agree with you that articles remain empty talk unless they are accompanied or followed by actions to establish and promote equality towards Unity. What shall we do?

It is inappropriate to call names. This forum provides opportunity to exchange views and suggestions in civilized manner on burning issues of our Ethiopia. It should not be a forum of insults and abuses or character assassinations of fellow participants. Miriam has every right to channel her views. You have equal right to rebut her opinion or analysis in a positive manner without offending his/her (not knowing the gender) personality. Calling names does not bring understanding among us. Let us be polite and respectful to each other while venting our political steams.

    Dear Dawi
Just to make sure you have not missed this articel (link below) since you have bashed Kenyan’s democracy in one of your commentaries. I read your response and I sense you are laboring hard to convince me that Mlese and his inner circle are not solely responsible for decission making in the country. This simply is nonsense!Thatan absolute power rests in the hands of Legese is readilly acepted fact even by his party officials. He is the chair man of TPLF,he is unelected or rather he a 2005 stolen election P/M, he is EPRDF chair man,he is chairman of his ethinic militia. As a result he fires and promotes his military generlas as well as civilians.

There fore the above titles made it clear that state power fully rests in the hands of the TPLF cabal with the frequent assortment from personel in Adwa and Hamassen.Your claim that the other reginal officials areequally responsible is not entirely correct. There might be some elected reginal officials who will be cooperating in the enforcment of Meles’s agenda, but the majority of them are His appointees. The second class of officials are the one who will bbe descpatched to do his secret duity.HoweAny way you look aat it tt still remains melese and his few loylists are totally responsible for els of the country. He is the one who secretly sold 1500k.m by 50 km land to the Sudan,He is the one who iterven twice in Somalia, he is the one who order the internal displacement of of OLF,ONLF,Gambelans and now the Amharas,It is he who continue to sale Ethiopian land to foreign investors and to his won party members.Melse Zenawi is the one who autorized the killings 196 peaceful demostrators.

This post comes at a time when we are starting to get antsy!!Reading a cupole other blogs latley, we’ve noticed many cupoles who started there paper work in January(07 )and already have there child or already have recieved there refferal. NOT FAIR WE SAY ..BUT WAIT, that is our patients getting to us. We then refocus on why we chose our agency and the benifit of the wait. We started in September of 06 and have currently been waiting 3 months and it will be 9 more months just to recieve the referral. We figure we will travel by June of 08 . We have full trust and confidence in our agency and the time gives more research, knowledge, social interaction, ect. to be comfortable and create a more perfect enviornment for our child. We believe time isn’t an issue .because when the time is right IT WILL HAPPEN, no sense rushing it ..Thanks for the post mary. Two crazy Kids!
