Can we afford to ignore TPLF Inc.’s undoing of Ethiopian society? Analytical perspective one of two By Aklog Birara, PhD

“The people occupying the plateau of the Blue Nile are conscious of a glorious past and proudly call themselves Ethiopians.”

Elise Reclus, Philosopher

Ethiopian ethnic-based political elites, most prominently, the champion of ethnic politics and business, TPLF Inc., were always bent on shredding to pieces our commonalities, shared history and common identity as Ethiopians of all shades, colors, languages and faiths, from their inception. They embraced the Apartheid like formula of separation and legalized ethnic-federalism. They were determined to de-institutionalize and de-capitalize Ethiopian society by dismantling social relations among the population. This is the thesis of this analytical piece. As a result of their secret and coded arrangements intended solely to serve them financially and economically, they sowed the seeds of revenge and fear among the population. Youth are forced to belong to the governing party if they wish to secure a job, a home or further education. As a result, the country that stood as symbol of independence, honor, dignity and pride for people of color around the globe is now the center of the grossest human rights violations on this planet. TPLF Inc. is determined to obliterate the past, present and future of all people who call themselves “Ethiopians.” This is happening in front of our eyes. As far as I know, de-institutionalization and social de-capitalization of Ethiopian society started when TPLF Inc. took power 21 years ago and continues at a faster pace today. The concepts were all planted during its formation. What we witness now is implementation of the sinister strategy using land and other economic resources to dispossess and expel.

Wherever one looks, dispossessions expulsions and human cruelty from government agents are widespread: the Afar, Beni-Shangul Gumuz, Gambella, Gondar, Lower Omo Valley, Oromia and SNNP regions and sub-regions are at the center. In this entire onslaught against the Ethiopian people, there is overwhelming documentary evidence that shows that the Amharic speaking population is singled out as ‘enemy’ number one. Why the differentiation? This group is identified by TPLF Inc. and the country’s traditional adversaries as nationalist, that is, as Ethiopian more than its label as Amhara. I documented this in my book, Waves, two years ago and forewarned that TPLF Inc. will continue its relentless campaign to dislodge this and other nationalist oriented members of society using ethnic-federalism and decentralized decision making as the driver. Using this mode of government arrangements, TPLF Inc. tries to camouflage its misdeeds by using surrogates. We know that surrogates have little or no power. Authority comes from the top. The continued expulsion of Amharic speaking Ethiopians from the lands they use and from the neighbors with whom they coexist peacefully and amicably reflects this sinister arrangement. People naively wonder why the outside world, especially donors and diplomats with stake in Ethiopia do not react.

Although this is not the purpose of this piece, I should like to share my take on the matter again. British and American policy makers, the two largest sources of bilateral aid to Ethiopia, know that the TPLF Corporate group is anathema to their own values of the rule of law, human freedom, free enterprise and a semblance of democracy, for example, checks and balances and political pluralism. Why do they support a repressive regime that portends insecurity and instability in the long-run? Why do they refuse a movement toward globally accepted norms of humane institutions, decency, fair play, openness and the like? In my view and the views of other prominent international experts on the subject, democratic reconstruction and reconfiguration are secondary to their national interests of security and stability in the Horn of Africa. In other words, they are willing and ready to sacrifice their core values to serve their own narrow and short-term national interests of averting terrorism and instability in the Horn of Africa as they have done in the rest of the world. This is why Ethiopian opposition groups cannot afford to operate in their own silos. They need to cooperate and show credibility that they stand for a bigger cause than narrow or parochial interests.

Like us, the world community looks at the faces of innocent children and women forcibly expelled from their farmlands and properties where their forefathers worked and lived for 100 years plus, in Benji Maji, Southern Ethiopia. Like us, those whose profession is to monitor the Horn know that theirs is a fresh and ugly testimony and reminder of how far ethnic politics and business in Ethiopia would go to bring havoc to this ancient land. They know that, with a stroke of an order–no doubt emanating from the highest levels of the governing party–children and women and poor farmers were herded like sheep in their own country by their own government and forcibly expelled from their homes. They know that neighbors were awed but could do nothing in the country of fear. The bewilderments in the faces of the children and women are graphic and speak louder than my capacity to write about them; and the cruelty and brutality of a regime that has literally gone wild and mad. These Ethiopians could be our children, our sisters, our mothers, our fathers and or relatives. It does not matter. They are, first and foremost human beings and Ethiopians who deserve treatment with honor and dignity. Their expulsion is ours too. Donors and diplomats in Addis Ababa know all of this; but cannot say much because it does not affect their interests. It is up to us to make them understand and to draw them to our side.

TPLF Inc.’s ethnic politics and business robbed these Ethiopians displaced from their homes, of their humanity, dignity and honor. Trust me. Regardless of ethnic, religious, ideological or demographic affiliation, it is our own common humanity, dignity and honor that are robbed and are being undone by tribal elite that have no decency or humanity to speak of. I am not entirely clear where this unprecedented assault on the Ethiopian people is heading and where it will lead and to what end? Some in the diplomatic and donor community are weary but are not speaking out. I am wearily reminded of the civil war in Liberia, the dismemberment of Yugoslavia, genocide in Rwanda and the collapse of Somalia. I and others witnessed the horrors in Liberia where people were hacked like wild animals or in Rwanda where nearly a million people lost their lives because of their ethnic affiliation should worry that the same could happen in our country. It is not an exaggeration to put the pieces together by connecting the dots of cruelty and inhumanity and by arriving at a larger and ominous picture that seems to emerge. TPLF Inc. and its ethnic elite collaborators seem to be determined to push the entire country into the abyss. Donors and diplomats in Addis Ababa know this but do not see an alternative that gives them confidence and comfort.

In my view, the plight of the Amhara is not a single ethnic dilemma. It is an Ethiopian dilemma. The plight of the tribes in the Omo Valley being forced out of their ancestral homes is not solely their problem. It is an Ethiopian problem. The eviction of Anuak, Afar and Somali from their lands to make room for a narrow band of emerging ethnic capitalists and foreign governments and firms from 36 countries is not an Anuak or Afar or Somali problem. It is an Ethiopian problem. The rape of Somali girls and women and the destruction of villages and property is not a Somali problem.

It is an Ethiopian problem. The transfer of lands in Waldiba on which monks depend, to TPLF Inc. firms and or the state within a state called MIDROC is not a Gondar problem. It is an Ethiopian one. No matter the location or the population, it is Ethiopia and Ethiopians who are under the gun. Thus, it behooves all Ethiopians to respond not as members of this or that ethnic or religious group but as Ethiopians. This is our only salvation as people. We either rise in unison as Ethiopians; or we will all perish together. We can never allow this to occur. It is not the legacy we would want to leave. Is it?

As I saw the video clips of innocent and frightened children, girls and women, I kept thinking that only an invading army would do this to Ethiopians. I am reminded that even invading armies from the colonial era were civilized and humane enough to differentiate the innocent from those who dissent. Children and women and poor farmers who work hard to earn a living are not a threat to the governing party. Their forcible expulsion is a form of ethnic cleansing and therefore a crime against humanity. Only Apartheid conducted an identical system of political and economic capture that expelled blacks and herded and concentrated them in their own “homelands or Bantustans.” This way, it is easier to monitor, subjugate and control them. TPLF Inc. does not have the moral courage or commitment to differentiate between those who dissent against it and those who live and work peacefully and legally in different parts of the country.

Ironically, Tigreans are free to live and work anywhere in Ethiopia. They are state sponsored and can own property anywhere in the country. A recent informal survey from a reliable group shows that in the city of Gondar, close to 50 percent of the population is now Tigrean as are more than 75 percent of major enterprises. Here is the difference. The Amharic speaking population of the city treats them as Ethiopians. No Tigrean national I am aware of has been expelled from the so-called Amhara region. This is the good news and Tigreans should condemn a ruling clique that abuses their name and expels people on the basis of ethnic and or linguistic affinity. For this reason alone, Ethiopia and the Ethiopian people do not deserve Apartheid like system that dispossesses and expels any or one group of people forcibly from any part of the country on the basis of linguistic and or tribal origin. Ethiopians must stand up and reject this regressive policy and the occurrences it triggers. They must recognize and appreciate the notion that inhumanity of man to man is not an Ethiopian popular tradition or value. It is not our heritage. It is the tradition of tyrants and dictators perfected by TPLF Inc. in other words; it is a governance and system’s issue.

Is our history as cruel as TPLF Inc. manifests it?

I should like to take the reader back to a snippet of history to strengthen my argument. TPLF Inc. rejects the evolution of the country it defines as a “prison of nations, nationalities and peoples,” for which it is the proclaimed liberator. These narrow-minded, clubby and family centered minority ethnic elite try to compel innocent and self-serving people alike to believe that our identity should be defined narrowly in tribal and linguistic terms. It uses emotions to drive its political and economic agenda on the rest of us. The reader knows that people enjoy different identities for different reasons. I will identify some of my own: am a professional in development, have a higher degree and was and or is a banker, professor, writer, belong to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, am a father, a husband and my linguistic affiliation is to Amharic and regional origin, Gondar. Of these, which one do you think is the identity that I cherish most and share or have in common with millions? It is this. I am an Ethiopian and have a great deal in common with Ethiopians than other people in the world. I presume most of us who hail from Ethiopia have numerous identities but believe in the notion that we are Ethiopians or people of Ethiopian origin. It is this core value that will save us.

The singular identity that binds us together regardless of different affiliations is that we belong to a country called Ethiopia. Hence, our commonality is expressed as Ethiopians and or as people of Ethiopian origin. TPLF Inc. wants us to sink to the bottom and think and organize ourselves as Amharic speakers or an Amhara ethnic group. I caution my compatriots that this is a tempting trap to which we should not sink. We need to be strategic and take the higher road of our historical and legitimate identity as Ethiopians. Let me elaborate within the context of today’s global community in which the TPLF Inc. formula is totally against the tide.

Who in the world would find it credible if I told (in official travels with the World Bank) a Chinese or a Brazilian or a Nigerian or a Norwegian at their respective airports that I am an Amharic speaking Gondarie? Wouldn’t the person find it incredible if I told him or her that I cannot live and or work in any part of Ethiopia because of my linguistic or ethnic affiliation? TPLF Inc. has reduced us to this low level. It is this emotionally driven and politically motivated identity that TPLF Inc. imposes on most of us. Some accept the new norm because of fear. Some accept it because of greed. Others accept it because of ignorance. Still others accept it because they believe in it. No matter the motive, TPLF Inc. wants us to believe that it is implementing Apartheid like formula on behalf of ‘oppressed nations, nationalities and people.’ The intent is to undermine Ethiopian unity and identity. The acid test of being an Ethiopian is the possibility of living and working in any part of Ethiopia. Otherwise, our commonality becomes meaningless regardless of the propaganda propagated by TPLF Inc. that we should all buy Renaissance Bonds and send our hard earned monies in support of a regime that does not allow us to fulfill our potential in our own country. Just think of this. The governing party that champions Ethiopian nationalism when it suits its interests still calls itself by its origin, Tigray People’s Liberation Front? Liberation from who is now a legitimate question. The reader knows the answer and the purpose.

The Greeks looked up to ancient Ethiopia and called it the common cradle of mankind. Among other things, they contended that ancient Egyptians “derived their civilization and religions from Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Ptolemaic (Greek) writers and philosophers felt and wrote that “Ethiopians were the first men that ever lived.” Martin Bernal’s “Black Athena: the Afro-Asiatic roots of classical civilization,” provides rich data and information on the richness of Ethiopian history; and, more important on the movement and on the interconnectedness of most Ethiopians for thousands of years. Interconnectedness of Ethiopians has now been validated through archaeological findings that confirm that Ethiopia is indeed the origin of humankind. In their highly acclaimed book, “Lucy (Dinknesh): The Beginnings of Humankind,” Donald Johansson and Maitland Edey, document the dramatic discovery of Lucy’s (Dinknesh’s) “completeness in the history of hominid fossil collection.” Dinknesh’s (Lucy’s) discovery did not happen by accident. It is a tribute to the farsightedness of Emperor Haile Selassie, who, in the 1950s–during a visit to Kenya–invited Western Anthropologists to explore fossils in Ethiopia and granted the requisite permits. The Omo valley expedition lasted from 1967 to 1977 and resulted in the finding of Dinknesh (Lucy). “There could no longer be any argument about that, or conjecture over whether a certain leg bone and a certain skull did or did not belong the same individual (Dinknesh). Here they were, together in one unbelievable skeleton.”

Dinknesh refers to a country known for thousands of years as Ethiopia, home of our common humanity as Ethiopians. If we are indeed the origin of mankind, possess an incontestable long history and have served as a home to different ethnic and religious groups for thousands of years, who is responsible for reducing us to identify one another as members of a tribe or a linguistic group rather than as Ethiopians? It is the EPLF, TPLF and other ethnic-based liberation fronts who wish us harm. It is also their foreign sponsors that continue to be inimical to a strong, unified and prosperous Ethiopia. As the champion of ethnic politics and business (the two are linked), TPLF Inc. is determined to obliterate this common humanity that the Ethiopian people have shared for thousands of years. This commonality has been strengthened generation after generation through marriages, economic and religious interactions, migration of people from South to North, from North to South, from East to West and from West to East and many in between. This is why I contend that Ethiopia and Ethiopians are the pace-setters of what is now commonly known as globalization. This phenomenon began as a result of human mobility from Ethiopia and the rest of Africa to the rest of the globe. Before Ethiopians moved across the globe, they spread within Ethiopia. Their linkages are thus incontestable.
Ethiopian identity and globalizing influence that TPLF Inc. wishes to undo by rewriting our entire history and reducing it to just 100 years to suit it, and by spreading the venom of ethnic revenge and hate are not confined to the story of Dinknesh, although hers is the foundation of our humanity. Herodotus, the Greek historian documented that Ethiopians reached out to the rest of the world through trade in spices and ivory far beyond Egypt and the Gulf. Ethiopians are said to have moved to and served in Persian armies. “The Eastern Ethiopians—for there were two sorts of Ethiopians in the army—served in the Indian army.” Here is the key though. “These were just like the Southern Ethiopians, except for their language and their hair; their hair is straight.” Threads that bind Ethiopians among one another through marriages, social and economic interactions, religious practices, localities and regions are rooted in our past. With its ups and downs and imperfections and manifestations of gross injustice, our past is the foundation of our present and future. In light of this, our diversity is nothing new. It has always been there. The trick is to harness it for the better.

Yet, our political leaders and institutions failed to use our diversity creatively and constructively in building an enduring, just and all inclusive society. Experts foreign and domestic recognize our history and diversity as sources of uniqueness and strength rather than as liabilities. Under TPLF Inc., both history and diversity are liabilities. These are used as political tools to create and deepen wedges to divide us, frighten us, exploit us and create animosities among us.

TPLF Inc. forces us to forget the assets and treasures that emanate from our roots and the uniqueness that our forefathers left for us. One additional example cements this point. In the 19th century, M. Le Jean, French, said this. “Ethiopia, even during its state of greatest decadence, offers to the unprejudiced traveler, the elements of an advanced social order. Feudality certainly exists there, but scarcely to a greater extent than in England…the administrative machinery is simple…is property well defined; individual rights are guaranteed by appeal to the Emperor; commerce is protected; and political vengeance and horrors of war in a great measure neutralized…” Can you say the same about the Meles Zenawi Government today? I cannot. The evidence is overwhelmingly oppressive and repressive. This is why revenge, fear and expulsion come naturally to the governing clique.

What can and should we do?

There is a great deal we can and should do. The starting point is for each of us and for our communities to believe and commit to preserving this ancient land and to frame an alternative that will accommodate the needs and interests of all its members. Our individual and collective responsibility is, first and foremost, to halt this frightening phenomenon of fear, ethnic divide and repression that–if not halted now–is likely to destroy all of us. We must determine that we do not wish to witness another Liberia, Rwanda or Somalia in Africa. TPLF Inc. and other surrogate ethnic-based parties use language and or other differences as a criterion to implant fear and revenge; to discriminate and expel as if we are not of the same diverse family; and to undo what has been built by all Ethiopians over thousands of years. Our ability and readiness to embrace one another and to stand for one another; and to reject ethnic divide is the starting point. We can do this wherever we are and in numerous ways.

This is the big picture I should like to implant in the reader’s mind. We need to reject the Apartheid like system that drives little children and mothers, old people and poor farmers from their homes and farms and from their neighbors. In part two of this commentary, I will provide a specific example of the horrors of ethnic cleansing and civil wars that entail irreparable damage regardless of the temporary strength of a ruling group.

The second in this series will be posted next week.

Thank you Dr Aklog for disecting the woyane agenda to dismantle Ethiopia as clearly as possible for all of us. There can be nothing more than the sad pictures of the wandring little children to show the beastiality of Meles. Even some beasts have been shown to show mercy to little children and infants. Today it may be the Amharas. Tomorrow it will be the Oromos, Gurages, Affars, Hadeyas, etc. One by one he will anihilate them if he is not stopped now. The Meles Agenda is becoming clearer every passing year: it is to divide the Ethiopian people into antagonistic little bantustans while at the same time pitting them against Tigreans. Once he completes his lutting of the country he will start to establish his Republic of Tigreans that may include Eritrea. What else can be his agenda? What else does the TPLF stand for? Or what else does he need article 39 of the so-called constitution?

[[…Like us, the world community looks at the faces of innocent children and women forcibly expelled from their farmlands and properties where their forefathers worked and lived for 100 years plus, in Benji Maji, Southern Ethiopia…]]

The people evicted who spoke on DW Radio said they lived in that region from 6-11 years therefore, they are recent settlers. So where does 100 plus years come from?

[[..In my view, the plight of the Amhara is not a single ethnic dilemma. It is an Ethiopian dilemma. The plight of the tribes in the Omo Valley being forced out of their ancestral homes is not solely their problem…]]

We have to be careful mixing environmental issues that the environmentalists raise (after they have reached middle income or above themselves) while talking about the Omo Valley resettlement and other irregularities/administrative issues of the country. Dr. Aklog sounded here like the Oakland institute think thank of some sort. Didn’t he?

What if new settlers (Amara or not) are taking over the little left Ethiopian National Parks to build private farms in the South? Should the Meles Dictatorship protect such places and find other appropriate farming locations for folks?

If the answer is yes, doing such things is going to be controversial. Remember the urban land lease issue?

BTW, I have seen an interview of the President of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region Ato Sheferaw Shegute a while ago where he invites all nationalities to come and work and develop the region. So it strange that people would be evicted while he is inviting others to come.

I read this long article with great patience and with the exception of crtain points it is very educational . You the writer said “Ironically Tigrians are free and work anywhere in Ethiopia. They are state sponsored and can own property anywhere in the country . ” It seems to me that you resent the Tigrian people and the people of Tigray are the victims of the TPLF mess and not the beneficiaries . We should clearly demarcate the boundry between the TPLF & the pople of Tigray . Second, you the writer said ‘ The TPLF Inc wants us to sink to the bottom & organize ourselves an Amharic speaker or Amharic ethinic group . I caution my compatriots that this is a tempting trap to which we should not sink .” Acording to your analysis you are already sank to the level of that and if you are not you were supposed to show us by condemning the Hailu Shawel’s organization . As far as I know Ethinic organization are the shortest cut for political power and we do not have to go back to history and we have seen it in yugaslavia and in Ethiopia too. Ethinic organizations in what ever form or level , their ulltimate goal is to target one ethinic group and consolidate their power . Last, you defined yourself and it was not necessary . This is because you have some kind of pride and and that same pride can make a rift between you & I . Finally, I sincerly apologize if I ever offend you . Ega Negatiga !

In this day and age, environmental protection is an integral part of economic development. Those days have passed where development is thought of only in economic terms of construction of buildings. A country should not be rich to think about planning for environmental protection as environment is a natural resources shared by all citizens. Mitigating environmental destruction is not only costly but have disastrous consequences. A prime example is the old Koka dam. Dr Aklog seems to be well aware of this. It is absurd and silly of you to belittle his concern for the purpose of defending a rotten and blood thirsty dictator. አንዳንዴ ከሆድ በላይ ማስብ ያስፈልጋል:: ለለውጥ ያህል::

Girum’s response is typical and expected considering what has taken place.

My opinion on the other hand, if anything, this incident is political rather than ethnic.

If the folks were EPRDFites I don’t think they would have been evicted in such a way. The government probably would have given them a replacement land before kicking them out of the settlement they were in.

As the Meles Dictatorship is not fully secure at this moment, it is bound to take crazy actions of such kind on any one that is linked to opposition. Let alone that, if someone is a middle road-er or a “neutral”, I think EPRDF will treat them as enemy as well. Reading the way they are treating Ermias the business man of Zemen Bank who is their show case of someone “non political” , “neutral” business man is case in point.

EPRDF will use ethnic or any card to promote their agenda. The Developmental State agenda that is.

Being a Tigrean will not immune someone from the harsh treatment in my opinion.

There is no question folks who are in the opposition camp are willing to do the same thing as well.

The question screaming at us through now is whether the scorched-earth politics is the best way to go?

Higly educational analysis, thank you Dr.Aklog.Perhpas many have knew for long what the TPLF leaders are capable of doing.Provided this assumption is shared by many then why is the oppostion fail to devise a working strategy to prevent a catastrophy of the present magnitude? Perhaps the sectarian nature of the oppostion, undue pre-occupation, about democratic reform under TPLF,the dual strategy of the regime -divide and rule, infltration of the political parties and controle of the armed resistance organizations from Asmara by fabricating none existing friction between EPLFand TPLF and wooing the oppostion to go to Hamassen. Are some of the pit falls that was a hurdle why the Ethiopian oppostion failed to show unity.

I guss we may say this are situations that no one has any controle. In a way I must say the regime’s necked behavior could have not been in display had there not been a weak oppostion in the first place.Perhaps it was necessary to sacrifice at some level as we see now inorder for the nation to come together.
I read some of the responses of this article, and I am convinced some are we have to subscribe to politcal correctness.Let me be clear Tigrians are not protesting in mass because theyI know Tigrians in business who fear about the future but prefer to be silebnt than speak up.

Last time I checked Dr. Aklog is an economist. What does he know about the environment? On the other hand, Dr. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher is Director General of Ethiopia’s Environmental Protection Authority. The following is what the World Future Council says about the him.

“He was Dean of the Faculty of Science at Addis Ababa University, and later Director of the Ethiopian Conservation Strategy Secretariat. During the 1990s Dr. Egziabher put much of his energy into negotiations at the various biodiversity-related fora, especially the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). During this time he built up a strong group of well-prepared African negotiators who began to take the lead in the G77 and China Group. Africa came out with united, progressive positions such as no patents on living materials and the recognition of community rights. In 199/2000 Dr. Egziabher’s leadership of the Like-Minded Group in the negotiations of the Cartagena Protocol on bio safety succeeded against strong US and EU opposition to protect biodiversity, human health and traditional and community rights. He received the Right Livelihood Award in 2000 and UNEP’s Champion of the Earth Award in 2006.”

Prof. Tewelde has studied the Development skim of the Omo valley area and his agency has given it a go ahead. And I trust his judgement.

So those who want to protect nature at (our) human expense are only full of hot air. They have developed every inch of their land/river in their countries but have the audacity to oppose our development which is still less than 3% of our rivers potential. That is why I don’t have any respect for them.

Thank for your percepptive outlook of ethnic-based politics and policies permeating the Ethiopian policitical parties and/factions for the last 21 years that led to establishment of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism as the main part of the constitution, that led to the formation of parties and/or factions in the armed struggle based on ethnic agenda rather than national agenda. Your portrayal of TPLF/eprdf, a multi-layer, hierarchical political model, as a corporation in terms of TPLF, Inc., falls short of desribing it as political model out of whcih grew the TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises, cadres and foreign corporations engaged in exploitation, economic and political stranglehold of the country’s resources to say the least about ethnic cleansing of Amahara Ethnic group from the Sothern regime, expelling the farmers from their farm lands and subjecting the land and water resources to ultimate devastation with the help of the teletafi (ethnic federalist) parties and the loyalist opposition (ethnic federalist) parties, including Tigrai-Harena, supporting ethnic federalism and ethnic-based liberation fronts disarmed or not disarmed are ethnic based with ethnic agenda vouching for ethnic majority rule as ethnic federalist parties. So, the teletafi parties and loyalist opposition parties need to undergo a revival process based on reflective thinking to think of their Ethiopiawinet first and their ethnicity second to join those with national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality to have precedence over ethnic and secessionist rights to tip the balance from the negative forces of disintegration to the positive forces of integration with national agenda.

The TPLF is a Politbuerro, not a corporation, an architect of the constitution with ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism built into the constitution as Artice 46, for ethnic federalism 39 (1) for ethnic secessionism and Article 8 on the sovereignity of Ethiopia, that ethnic divides the land mass in to seven out of Nine and/or 80 ethnic groups, with ill defined boundries, of self rule and separate development with pending border disputes as the case is/was with the Eritrean Province, and as a prlude to secessionism by dismantling the origiginal provincial boundries. That the decosnstruction process TPLF is underatking with the teletafi and loyalist opposition parties and liberation fronts, while simultaneousely undermining those with the national agenda, particlarly the Amhara ethnic group thas been demonized, marginalised massacred now with an egagement in ethnic cleansing from those regions they resetled in.

The only vialble concept to combat the negative forces of disintegration, which brought about humanitarian, economic, political and environmental crises is by coalescing aroud the national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians with commony adopted strategies to achieve these goals in a non-violent uprising to freedom from autocratic, ethnocratic system of govenance minority or majority ethnic rule to democratic rule that rules by the consent of the governed. That is the major focus with individual rather than ethnic rights as the center piece.

    #12,

Did you consider the conflict of interest of Dr. Tewolde Berhan G/Egziabher in a country ruled by Tigrean minority. I have known Dr. Tewolde and would have not douted if he concluded the same under a reperesentative government, but he a becomes a loser under the rule of his ethnic group.

You can write comparable biography for the fake Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Aba Gebremedhin (aka Paulos). But, following the instruction of the dictator Meles, he is working against the interest of the church he was supposed to work for. There are a lot of indication Dr. Tewolde has not used his good office well. Environmental studies should be transparent, it should be public and the community should be consulted. Last time I checked this never happened. Not only on this project, all the flower companies are dumping their discharges into the rivers in various part of the country. In majority of the cases, these creeks and rivers are the only sources of water for the community. As a result, these flower farms workers and people living in those area are suffering from various ailments.
Note: I’ve great respect for Dr. Tewolde. I will not underestimate his professional achievement and the campaign he led in biodiversity movement. May be running agencies is not his thing. He was a disappointment when he was the President of Asmara University. The same when he is the head of Environmental Agency. You didn’t want to mention that he shared the Right Livelyhood prize with other Ethiopian, Dr. Melaku Worede? Why? because he is from Bulga and Tewolde from Adwa? The right to patent biodiversity was spearheaded by Dr. Melaku to protect the interest of small farmers. Dr. Tewolde just tagged in. Dr Tewolde is not from agricultural field. Still, he deserves the prize, his achievement is Ethiopia’s pride.

[[..controle of the armed resistance organizations from Asmara by fabricating none existing friction between EPLFand TPLF and wooing the oppostion to go to Hamassen. Are some of the pit falls that was a hurdle why the Ethiopian oppostion failed to show unity...]]

    If you are talking about G7′s position it is the best they can do considering the circumstances;

It is you not them that “fabricates” grand illusion here by calling the war between TPLF/EPLF that cut short of over 100,000 Ethiopians “none existing”. One thing you have to know is that there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics; they break and fend alliances according to circumstances. Don’t be blinded by ethnic affiliations.

If an alliance of G7/OLF & others (including EPLF for that matter) come through Hamassen with a better alternative for Greater Ethiopia/ country, what is the problem with that but, until that is realized or the Meles Dictatorshiop opens up for them to participate, they need to do what they have to do.

Looking at the press release of G7 on the recent invasion of Ethiopian Army in Eritrea and how they sided with Eritrea tells us where they are at this moment however, that does not mean it is their permanent political position.

[[...I read some of the responses of this article, and I am convinced some are we have to subscribe to politcal correctness..]]

IMO, Political Correctness is not a weakness, it seems to me folks who go against politically correct are those who do not want to have to be polite or civil to others. They see nothing of using foul language hurtful to others as long they say what they want in the way they like it. This is off course a prevailing attitude of people who are in privlage and can be from any of the ethnic groups of Ethiopia.

In sum total, humanitarian, economic, political and environmental crises have been perpetrated by TPLF/eprdf regime for the lat 21 years with the help of the teletafi (ethnic federalist) and loyalist oppositon parties of whom one of them is signatory to the Charter, and the rest perhaps supporters, on the silent majority of Ethiopians, the majority tax payers. There is no qualification necessary on any particular field of of study to coment on any one aspect of the above conditions the silent majority of Ethiopians are subjected to requires only commensense and understanding of the humanitarian, economic, political and environmental crises that have besieged the silent majority and the country.

Just because the appointee for the post of the environmental protection agency, is an environmentalist, a biololegist or an evolutionary biologist or an ecologist, that he he has capcity to ignore the devatation, ecosyystem changes of back waters behind the dam, occupying farmlands, the exapropriation of land from the farmers in the area by foreign corporations instead of resttling the populations in the area with irrigated farming practices and to Ethiopian enterprenuers in a limited scale to locally produce food crops to alleviate food shortages, undercarefully managed minimum tillage tillage and soil conservation practices with little of no fertilesers while maintaining most of the pristine land in place was not the recommendation from the Dr. Tewelde Egihabeher. Nothing his agency has said or done in terms of environental impact statement for the Omo River basin nor to the diminishing return that Ethiopia would faal into by the zealots of green revolution by foreign corporations wasting and devastating the land resources only to export cash and food crops back to their own country.

Despite ones conviction based on ones backgroung or commonsense knowledge, I did not see the go ahead sign provided by Prof. Tewelde (Gebreegziabher and his agncy (environmental protection), according to Dawi, does not in any way match the literature review about the impact of the dams on the Omo River basin on the environment leading to environmental crisis.

All what the TPLF/eprdf did is build infrastructure in the form hydroelectric power to the neighboring countries, and water for irrigation for TPLF cadres and foreign corporations for expoting cash and food crops to their own countries on perhaps IMF fund on behalf of Ethiopian Taxpayers.

My take is an outright distrust, disrespect of the so called “developed world” & environmentalists that complain of environmental problems because they don’t include their complains with the ethics, cash money, material, alternative technology and advise to reduce environmental impact on us.

They see us as beggars while China & others see us investment destinations. “developed world” are the greediest consumers of human & natural resources & they cause our instabilities that include brain drain and what have you.

On the lighter side, I read on guardian last year, that in China population controls have kept sulfur dioxide emissions down by 20% and water pollution by 30%. Without planned parent hood, the average person would have about 1/3 less land and 20% less forest. :-)

We can do planned parent hood while developing our rivers & land – I think.

With all the controversies the Patriarch is known to have made some reforms in the Orthodox church such as salaries to clergies etc. I don’t know much but, what I heard of the reform is commendable.

The reason why you trust China more than “developed world”is because you love and admire dictators including Meles. China is providing a life line for dictators by encouraging and enabling African dictators to function. Other than that, Chinese do not have an iota of respect for black people of Africa or human right. I do not know any either fair investment or tangible support they provided to help develop any country, other than exploiting and expropriating resources through corrupt dictators.
Let the truth be told, you are trying to shift blames to developed countries when the major causes of Africans backwardness are the homegrown corrupt dictators, like Meles, they are continuously producing. At the risk of being labeled naive, I’ll say this. Developed countries have provided under developed countries with resources necessary to develop and have sustainable programs to support and help develop these countries. For lack of better term, African countries including Ethiopia should be indebted to developed countries. They fed you when you were starved, they provide you shelter when you were deprived of shelter, they provided medication when you were suffering from various diseases, etc. etc. What do you want them to do for you?
Blame your own dictator not them. Do you think this is an argument you can win? Can you give credit to Chinese for any of those?

Dear Dawi what is the ultimate essence of politics in the minds of Meles?
Achieving being a Developmental State through Dictatorship like this by displacing innocent poor farmers like this? For you is it the ultimate essence and meaning of Dictatorship? In doing so what Meles is doing is denying the very essence of Ethiopiawinet of such peoples. Dear Dawi you may give any sort of intellectual rationalization to cover up the blatant atrocities of Meles and TPLF that has been committed against Amharas since the beginning of its cling to power in 1983 EC. That is why I repeatedly refer Ethiopians the hidden agenda and ideology of Meles and TPLF that is guided by Books like “የትግራይ ህዝብ ታሪክና የትምክህተኞች ሴራ” that is written by Tesfa Kidan Desta.
In this book it is very evident how the atrocities of Meles and TPLF are very deep-rooted against Amharas. Meles and TPLF if possible they want to wipe of the history of Amharas and Amharas themselves from the page of time and history. The governance of Meles and TPLF for the last 20 years and in continuum is mainly governed by this evil sentiment that is very deep-rooted in their soul. Amhara and Orthodox religion are one of the very main vital inherent fabrics of Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet. If the two are perished then what is left is such a very great void in Ethiopiawinet. We know that Meles is a mercenary stooge client-regime and what he heinously advances is the agenda of foreign forces who are against Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. Dear Dawi you can not present political stand of citizens as a pretext to commit such inhuman barbarism. It is good that you rationalize for every abusive act Meles is insanely committing against Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. Well I can accept you the last rationalization that is sensible to accept if you are to admit and give me such rationalization regarding this guy. And that last remaining rationalization that is naked as blatant truth is that Meles is so evil and very wicked about when it comes to Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians especially that is closely associated with Amharas. So Meles and most of TPLFites are anti-Amhara and Amhara-phobia.And the reason is simple and clear in that, though not flawless, the history of Amhara for the last 100 years or more is almost pro-Ethiopia pro-Ethiopiawinet and Pro-Ethiopians that is entirely against the agenda of Meles and TPLF. So for Meles and TPLF in order to carry out their destructive agenda against
Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians then they have to perish all forces, especially the Amharas, who are hindrances in their ways. Meles is so much delusional and in grandiose regarding Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. For him Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians are just their recent creations in his image and likeness.
He is in severe self-conceit and grandiose which is indeed the very cause of his tragic and disgraceful failure in Ethiopian History. As long as he is so evil and wicked regarding Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians all what he has been doing is not a as failure in his viewpoint but rather a success story. However, he failed us Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. Even especially he failed the Tigrean peoples in general and their history related to Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet. Due to Meles and TPLF the Tigrean peoples in general have made their records printed on the darkest side of Ethiopian history. While in reality it is known that it is the Tigreans in highest percentage who are living and creating unfair wealth through plundering of the entore nation outside of their KILIL then doing such blatant dislocation of poor farmers of Amharas is then paving the way for another disaster against Tigreans.
While knowing the severe consequences of such bad acts against Amharas then why Meles is doing such insanity?
    1) Meles and TPLF wants to punish revenge and weaken Amharas for what they ‘think’ as causes of Tigray impoverishment and backwardness as is written in “የትግራይ ህዝብ ታሪክና የትምክህተኞች ሴራ”. Actually, the reason they present this reason is just to exploit this pure blatant fabricated allegation as a sheer pretext to achieve justification and moral basis in order to plunder, impoverish, impair and then destabilize and disintegrate the rest of the nation the way we have seen it for the last 20 years and in continuum. So this evil act is local as well as foreign influenced.
    2) Meles and TPLFites are power mongers who are severely desperate for power. So they want to show their power against those Amharas(who were once upon a time their rulers) so that to display that they are superior, which is purely psychological. I mean that Meles and TPLFites suffer from inferiority as well as superiority complex when it comes to the issue of Amharas. So in order to achieve political as well as economical superiority then they are driven to such extent of blatant insanity.
    3) For Meles and TPLF Ethiopia and Ethiopians are in general deemed as their trophy achieved through ‘sacrifice’ after the fall of Derg. So they think they have every write to do what ever they want. Even they forget that one day they will be accountable for all the crimes and destructions they have caused. And hence For Meles and TPLF Ethiopia is their personal property. And hence when they dislocate such large amount of population from their native habitat, then for them it is trivial with no consequential accountability.
    4) Meles as an evil stooge messenger of foreign forces he has the heinous hidden agenda of creating religious political economical and social havoc and crisis in Ethiopia that can serve as a prelude which eventually leads to inevitable destabilization and disintegration of Ethiopia. The economic havoc for the last 5 years due to such massive impoverishment some how failed to effectively lead to achievement of this hidden agenda. So the other main remaining chance is to create hostility and mistrust between peoples of Ethiopia through such blatant mass dislocation based on Ethnicity.
    5) It is to notify Ethiopians that they do not have the expected citizenry respect and rights as an Ethiopian. So it is to alienate and harass and dehumanize Ethiopians so that they do not have any right to claim. Unlike many 3rd world and African peoples We Ethiopians were not colonized and hence are proud of Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet till the fall of Derg. But today we are in virtual colonization through the mercenary stooge client-regime of TPLF. One of the insidious aims and motives of Meles and TPLF is to make us devoid of this pride and identity as an Ethiopian by degrading and adulterating our very humanity as Ethiopian. If Meles is devoid of the pride and identity of Ethiopiawinet then like wise we have to be devoid of it.So one of the very messages convoyed through such blatant acts of massive dislocation is that we Ethiopians do not any more belong to this nation. That is why I once said before that the perpetual grace and pride of Meles for his internally weak egomaniac character is achieved through the perpetual disgrace of Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. For Meles this type of massive dislocation against poor farmers of Amharas is his success story.

So dear Dawi please do not try to cover the blatant insanity of Meles by the usual intellectual rationalization. If you have to rationalize it please say it or accept it that this guy has the deepest sense of hatred against Amharas. Why you want to encapsulate or cover his inhuman insanity as if it is the result of usual party political affairs? Most of the things that Meles has been advancing for the last 20 years and in continuum eventually down to the earth boils down to his perverted sentiment regarding Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians. It is not a matter of his power mongering issues the way you want it to misrepresent. He is desperate for power not just because of his Developmental-State dream strive just rather to achieve his distractive agenda against Ethiopia, Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians that originates from his deep-rooted egomaniac and psychopathic sentiments especially against AMHARAS.
So finally I want to say to Meles that the problem is not with in AMHARAS but rather the problem is mainly in your self. So please try to properly deal with your inner personal issues. Dear Meles If you are such treacherous traitor of this nation then why you make the AMHARAS a scapegoat for your evil acts? It is really insanity!!!

Surrogate Colonization-A New Challenge for the Amhara People

    *************************************************************

For the last twenty one years, the Amhara people were extremely exposed to the direct and indirect assault of the sworn enemy, TPLF. Among them the following are the major assaults:

The annexation of arable lands from Amhara region to Tigray region which includes Humera, Tsegede, Alamata, Korem and so on.
The massacre of thousands of Amhara people in Assebot, Bedeno and Gondar.
The dissolution of Mechanized farmers and farm associations in Amhara region and let them and tens of thousands of families to abject poverty.
    Expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Amharas from different regions of the country and confiscation of their property;
Demonizing the Amhara people as if it were favoured by the past rulers.
Technical avoidance of the Amhara people from major economic arena; which is exposing them to economic genocide.
Statistical Decimation of 2.5 million Amharas in order to uproot it from the political and economic life.
Humiliation of the Amhara people by claiming officially that “the cause for elimination of 2.5 million Amharas is HIV-AIDS”; as if the Amhara people were promiscuous which is against the culture of Christianity.
Granting an unofficially boarder villages of the Amhara region to the Sudan government without plebiscite and causing the indigenous people to forcible displacement.
Firing of elite Amharas from Higher institutions. For example among the 42 Professors who were fired from Adiss Ababa University during the early years of TPLF in power, more than 32 were Amharas. And it is still continuing to screen out Amharas from the higher institutions in one or another way.
Bankrupting successful Amhara businessmen and companies by allocating funded TPLF henchmen to tackle their business. Particularly after election 2005, it becomes common to bankrupt them at all cost and force them to exile.
Eliminating highly placed Amhara officials from the Army and arrests them.
Demoralizing the Amhara youths by re-writing history and mud-slinging on its history.

And currently the Amhara people are facing with a new type of assault called Surrogate Colonization in west and north Gondar to annex the North Mountains to Tigray region by displacing the indigenous people and replacing Tigrians under cover story of investment. Such surrogate colonization is taking effect after the North Mountains have been discovered that it is Gold and other minerals field.

We have left nothing with TPLF; we have been cornered, humiliated, persecuted, harassed, assaulted, exiled, locked-in jail, tortured, expelled, impoverished, confiscated and killed. We mustn’t have room for TPLF anymore!!! We must fight it by all possible means until we regain our freedom!!! We must stand firm until we assure our very existence on our soil!!! We must struggle desperately until we tear apart the reins of the Quasi-occupiers!!! And we mustn’t quit until we drive the last nail over the coffin of TPLF!!!
