The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition

At the recent 2012 G8 Food Security Summit in Washington, D.C., Abebe Gellaw, a young Washington-based Ethiopian journalist, stood up in the gallery and thunderously proclaimed to dictator Meles Zenawi, “… Food is nothing without freedom…” Is he right?

When President Obama invited the leaders of Ghana, Tanzania, Benin and Zenawi to the Summit on May 18, few expected any meaningful outcomes. A White House statement on the Summit declared: “The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition is a shared commitment to achieve sustained and inclusive agricultural growth and raise 50 million people out of poverty over the next 10 years by aligning the commitments of Africa’s leadership to drive effective country plans and policies for food security; the commitments of private sector partners to increase investments where the conditions are right; and the commitments of the G-8 to expand Africa’s potential for rapid and sustainable agricultural growth.” To implement the “New Alliance” and spark a Green Revolution in Africa, dozens of global food companies, including multinational giants Cargill, Dupont, Monsanto, Kraft, Unilever, Syngenta AG, have signed a “Private Sector Declaration of Support for African Agricultural Development”.

The vast majority of Ethiopians eke out a living as smallholder farmers. According to a 2010 USAID report, eight of every ten Ethiopians live in rural areas with average land holdings of 0.93 hectare. A 2011 report by the Oakland Institute (OI) stated that Zenawi’s regime has “transferred at least 3,619,509 ha of land to investors, although the actual number may be higher.” These “lease” transfers (for 99 years) are handed out to companies from India, China, Saudi Arabia and 36 other countries for pennies per hectare. The OI further reported that “displacement from farmland is widespread, and the vast majority of locals receive no compensation.” The displaced farmers who have lost their ancestral lands to “leases” are mostly indigenous minority peoples.

In 2011, Africa imported $50 billion worth of food from the U.S. and Europe. Food prices in Africa are 200-300 percent higher than global prices, which means higher profit margins for multinationals that produce and distribute food. With a steady growth in global population, the prospect of transforming Africa into vast commercialized farms is mouthwatering for global agribusinesses. The “New Alliance for Food Security” will accelerate at warp speed the “transfer” of hundreds of millions of hectares of arable African land to Cargill, Dupont, Monsanto, Kraft, Unilever, Syngenta AG and the dozens of other signatory multinationals. Working jointly with Africa’s corrupt dictators, these multinationals will “liberate” the land from Africans just like the 19th Century scramble for Africa; but will they liberate Africa from the scourge of hunger, famine, starvation and poverty?

A Brief Lesson in African History

In 1894, fourteen European and other countries including the U.S. (the “G-14” of the era) held a land grab conference in Berlin to “save” the Dark Continent. The publicity cover for the conference was the liberation of Africa from the slave trade and the need to undertake a civilizing mission. To that end, the Berlin Conference passed hollow resolutions. But the real agenda was to carve up Africa between the European powers peacefully and without the need for internecine imperialistic wars. The Scramble for Africa gave Britain a nice slice of Africa stretching from Cape-to-Cairo. France gobbled up much of western Africa. King Leopold II of Belgium took personal possession of the Congo. Portugal grabbed Mozambique and Angola. Italy snagged Somalia and laid claim to parts of Ethiopia.

Ironically, the G-8’s “New Alliance” smacks of the old Scramble for Africa. The G-8 wants to liberate Africa from hunger, famine and starvation by facilitating the handover of millions of hectares of Africa’s best land to global multinationals in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria and Ghana, among others. Is history repeating itself in Africa? Only the people of Madagascar have been able to successfully fight back and rescue their country from the clutches of the international land grabbers by dumping their president.

Ethiopian Hunger Games

When it comes to famine and starvation in Ethiopia, the standard response by the ruling regime and its international donors is to deny, evade and sugarcoat the whole thing in clever euphemisms (calling it “severe malnutrition, “food insecurity”, etc.; see my commentary, African Hunger Games at Camp David ), blame droughts and natural forces and endlessly supply food handouts. Bad governance, dictatorships and corruption are rarely blamed for the predictable and recurrent famines and starvation in Ethiopia.

Last week, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Ethiopia announced that “3.2 million people are food insecure in Ethiopia” and that it needs an additional US$183 million to provide emergency assistance. At the same time, Mitiku Kassa, Zenawi’s official responsible for agriculture, blamed the “food insecurity” on drought: “Irregularity in rainfall seasons resulting in problems of such a kind is not a new thing to us. We faced it last year and a year before that and we are managing it so far… The country has enough resources and mechanisms in place to deal with it this time, though.” The mechanism in place is beggary proficiently practiced as a high art form by Zenawi’s regime over the past two decades. A little over a month ago, the U.S. pledged to provide nearly $200 million in additional humanitarian aid to Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. In 2011, the U.S. provided more than $1.1 billion in humanitarian aid. Ethiopia received more than US$3 billion in 2008, making that country the largest recipient of development aid in Africa.

To say that Ethiopia will continue to face chronic “food insecurity” is like predicting the sun will rise tomorrow. “Food insecurity” (a/k/a famine) in Ethiopia is expected to reach biblical proportions by 2050. In 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau made the catastrophic prediction that Ethiopia’s population by 2050 will more than triple to 278 million. That did not stop Zenawi from declaring a crushing victory on famine in 2011: “We have devised a plan which will enable us to produce surplus and be able to feed ourselves by 2015 without the need for food aid.” Zenawi’s plan to “produce surplus” is to stretch out cupped palms for handouts of crumbs left over from exports by Karuturi Global, Saudi Star, Cargill, Monsanto… and the rest.

It is manifest that with the “New Alliance”, the U.S. and the other G8 countries have willfully blinded themselves to the moral hazard of endlessly aiding famine victims in Africa and unashamedly accepted the moral bankruptcy of endlessly aiding African dictators. It is axiomatic for them that providing endless handouts to impoverished and famished Africans is their divinely ordained “burden”, to borrow a word from the poet Rudyard Kipling who romanticized British colonialism. But they are now playing a far more sophisticated and deadly “hunger game” in Africa. They want to use multinational food conglomerates to “save” Africa from starvation by 1) subsidizing these giant agribusinesses to dump their agricultural surpluses in famine-stricken African countries, and 2) by greasing the hands of Africa’s corrupt dictators so that these multinationals could “lease” hundreds of millions of acres of Africa’s most arable land to cultivate export crops that command high prices on the global commodities markets, without contributing much to the domestic African market to alleviate endemic hunger. The “New Alliance” is a brilliant strategy that will sustain the decades long vicious cycle of dependence and food aid addiction in Africa while displacing and severely undercutting the productive capacity of the African smallholder farmers to deal with famine on their own.

Keeping Them Honest!

It is noteworthy that few in the mainstream U.S. or international media paid any attention to the proceedings of the “New Alliance” food Summit. Even the international humanitarian organizations thought it was a publicity stunt. Oxfam was dismissive: “The New Alliance is neither new nor a true alliance. The rhetoric invokes small-scale producers, particularly women, but the plan must do more to bring them to the table.” ActionAid was instructive: “While the New Alliance touts the role of the private sector, as President Obama said, this must include even the smallest African cooperatives. The real innovators in African agriculture are women smallholder farmers. Any private sector partnership to improve food security must place them and African civil society at the center.”

What needs special attention is the basic approach to “food security” that was discussed and not discussed at the summit. Rajiv Khan, the USAID Administrator and moderator of the food security Summit directing his remarks to Zenawi said:

… So many people have associated a mental image of hunger with Ethiopia and at the same time because of actions in the public sector maintaining strong public investment in agriculture you were able to protect millions of Ethiopians during the recent drought from needing food aid and food assistance. Could you speak to, even as we are launching a new food alliance, to engage the private sector, could you speak to some of the comments you have shared with us privately how important it is we live to our commitments to invest in public investment, in public institutions?

Zenawi responded:

Ultimately, agricultural transformation in Africa is going to be a partnership between the smallholder farmer and the private sector. But the most important actor here is the smallholder farmer that 70 percent of [interruption by Abebe Gellaw calling Zenawi “a dictator…” ] 70 percent of the population in Africa is smallholder farmers, so without transforming their livelihoods there is no future for agriculture in Africa. So at this stage the role of the private sector can only be to supplement the small scale farmer. There is the issue of rural roads, water supply systems, irrigation infrastructure. All of these require public investment; and yes, we need more of it. But we also need public investment. We in Africa are doing all we can, as I said, most of our countries are moving towards 10 percent of their budgets invested in agriculture; but we need partnerships. This morning the President [Obama] was talking about the L’Aquila Initiative with $22 billion of money promised. We want the money promised delivered as the President was saying. We need that for public investment in infrastructure. We also need the developed countries to do something about trade because when you subsidize your farmers, our farmers who cannot be subsidized by our poor governments cannot compete. In the European Union, for example, every cow earns about $2 per day. Now that is more than the average African farmer gets and so if the subsidies were to be dealt with, we could have a better way of trading out of poverty.

Khan’s assertion that Zenawi by “maintaining strong public investment in agriculture [was] able to protect millions of Ethiopians during the recent drought from needing food aid and food assistance” is simply a statement made in reckless disregard for the truth, and arguably borders on a patent falsehood. The fact of the matter is that USAID is clueless about its agricultural programs in Ethiopia, according to the audit report of the Office of the Inspector General of USAID (March 2010, at p. 1):

The audit was unable to determine whether the results reported in USAID/Ethiopia’s Performance Plan and Report were valid because agricultural program staff could neither explain how the results were derived nor provide support for those results. Indeed, when the audit team attempted to validate the reported results by tracing from the summary amounts to the supporting detail, it was unable to do so at either the mission or its implementing partners… In the absence of a complete and current performance management plan, USAID/Ethiopia is lacking an important tool for monitoring and managing the implementation of its agricultural program.

In cases where USAID has been served with credible allegations of misuse of humanitarian and development aid for political purposes, it has turned a blind eye, deaf ears and muted lips. In 2009, the U.S. State Department, under which the USAID operates as the agency primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid, promised to investigate allegations that “$850 million in food and anti-poverty aid from the U.S. is being distributed on the basis of political favoritism by the current prime minister’s party.” No report has been issued.

Khan and Zenawi can talk about “public investment” and the “smallholder farmer” until the cows come home, but the fact of the matter is that neither Ethiopia nor the rest of Africa can achieve food sufficiency by tethering predatory multinational corporations with corrupt African dictators in a new “alliance for food security” and and strapping them around the necks of Africa’s smallholder farmers. A joint venture between jackals and hyenas will never benefit the gazelles.

There are some simple questions that need to be asked about Ethiopia’s hunger games: Could Ethiopia reasonably expect to achieve food security when its citizens are prohibited by law from owning agricultural (for that matter all) land? Does it make sense to hand out the country’s most arable land to “foreign investors” to produce food for export and ensure food security in other countries when Ethiopians are dying from starvation? Could Ethiopia reasonably expect to be saved from famine, starvation or “chronic food insecurity” by Karuturi, Saudi Star, Cargill, Dupont and the rest of the vampiric leeches? Does the smallholder Ethiopian farmer scratching out a living on 0.93 hectare stand a snowball’s chance in hell against Karuturi, Saudi Star, Cargill, Dupont…? Is the ultimate destiny of the smallholder African farmer to be a consumer of food produced by global agricultural multinationals instead of being a local producer and harvester of his/her own food?

Zenawi has adamantly opposed private ownership of land, which by all expert accounts is the single most important factor in ensuring food security in any nation. In 2000, Zenawi said (and has repeatedly taken similar positions since):

I have not heard of any truly convincing reason as to why we should privatize land ownership at this stage. I have not heard of any economic rationale for doing so. If there were to be an overwhelming economic rationale to do it and ultimately that would be the best way of securing the interests of our peasant farmer and therefore politically that would be our agenda… But at the same time we do not have any illusions as to what land ownership can do to the peasant farmer over the long-term. We do not believe that the long-term future and destiny of our peasant farmers is to be stuck in the mud, so to speak. We feel that ultimately there has to be industrialization, ultimately these people have to find to get employment outside agriculture.”

In 2012, Zenawi pontificates about the need to “transform the livelihoods Africa’s smallholder farmers” through “public investment” and predicts “there is no future for agriculture in Africa.” He just does not get it! There can be no smallholder farmer when there is no land to have and to hold. The smallholder Ethiopian farmer that Zenawi talks about is no better than the sharecropper or the tenant farmer. When the smallholder farmer is arbitrarily evicted from his land because he refuses to support Zenawi’s regime, denied fertilizer because he voted for the opposition or is put on the blacklist and watched day and night by hordes of informants because he wants to remain politically independent, he is no longer a smallholder farmer. He becomes a landless, hopeless, helpless, restless, hapless, rootless, voiceless and powerless panhandler of international food aid. Without the small holder farmer, not only is there not a future for agriculture in Africa, there is no future for Africa itself!

USAID, Ethiopia’s largest donor, in its 2010 report (perhaps unread by Khan), makes the simple point that effective agricultural development and long-term food security requires “100% ownership and buy-in by the Ethiopian people”. But instead of a “buy in”, Zenawi has pursued a relentless and ruthless policy of kick out, resulting in the displacement and confiscation of ancestral lands from countless small holder farmers. Now, Zenawi rubs his hands with glee to swipe his cut of the $22 billion promised in the L’Aquila Initiative. That is all he cares about!

Food is Nothing Without Freedom!

Ethiopia’s four-decade old dependence on humanitarian food aid will continue and worsen. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child provide that it is the natural right of all people to have access to food. But under Zenawi, Ethiopians face a double whammy: A insatiable hunger for food and an unquenchable thirst for freedom, democracy and human rights. Ethiopians suffer from hunger and thirst because they are victims of a ruthless dictatorship!

In 2007, speaking at the World Food Day, President Horst Köhler of Germany made the following extraordinarily insightful statement:

Hunger is not an inescapable destiny, but can be eliminated by wise policies. This requires first and foremost that the governments of the developing countries make food security for their populace a priority goal…. Democratic participation by the people is the best guarantee that governments will genuinely understand people’s basic needs and will take these into account. As the Indian Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has so aptly said, in countries where there are no elections and there is no opposition, governments do not need to worry about political fallout from their failure to eradicate poverty…. Good governance and a functioning executive are absolutely crucial for an economic policy that is geared to the needs of the people and will help to eradicate poverty…

Who can seriously expect a smallholder to invest his savings in his farm and machinery if he fears he may be thrown off the land at any time?… Excessive long-term help from outside can stifle the recipients’ initiative and frequently even results in aid-dependency. … Hunger is above all the result of political mistakes – in the developing countries as in the industrialized nations. To conquer hunger in our globalized world we need an honest, reliable and partnership-based development policy that spans the entire planet…

Perhaps President Obama could begin a new alliance for food security based on honesty and a genuine commitment to fundamental democratic principles that could help alter permanently Africa’s destiny as the beggar continent. The real solution to famine in Ethiopia lies in nourishing the emaciated Ethiopian body politic with clean elections, accountability, transparency, open political space and robust human rights protections. In 2009, he lamented, “There is no reason why Africa cannot be self-sufficient when it comes to food. I have family members who live in villages — they themselves are not going hungry — but live in villages where hunger is real.” President Obama should remind Zenawi and the rest of the African gang of dictators that though man does not live by bread alone, a hungry man in the village is an angry man!

    Dear writer,
I appreciate your way of analysis what ever reservations I may have. That is what democracy mean.Though you support Abebaw’s way of proclaiming,I condemned that way of opposing/explaining anger as it is unethical and undemocratic.

The news about Abebe Gellaw being a hero is overwrought. My ear is bleeding from reading day and day out for last two weeks or so. Do not get me wrong. There is no denying the fact that Meles the Tigryan leader was unduly embarassed to a considerable extent that his wife, Azeb had to feed him bottle after bottle of valium to calm him down and ushered him constantly to the bathroom on the flight back to Finfine. To any intelligent and well-versed Ethiopian in the history of Africa, one finds the people of North of Ethiopia were not brave enough to fought a small contingent of Italian army let alone the Mahadi, Khalief Abduhai of the Sudan at the battle of Metama/Gallabat It is impossible to have respect for a nation who run away when the Italians put an electric light and ballon to scare the hell out of these later born Adwa heros. It was these two incidents that boost the courageous Italians that they will win any war with Ethiopians any time. It was all recorded and vividely well documented. Menelik, is the bon fide hero the colonizer lost battle at Adwa in October 1896. Ethiopians became a nation among equal nations. While Ras Mengish and Ras Alula were busy amputaing the legs of this Hamassen banda( the grand-father of Issays and Dr. Berket Hapte Selassie among others) who fought on behalf of the Italians. In my verbose way I want your esteemed readers to let them know that Ethiopia is full heros:who beat Ahmed Gragne,Menelik II,Ras Abebe, Dejematch Gersue Duki I could go on. Bye for now

[[Food is Nothing Without Freedom!.......The real solution to famine in Ethiopia lies in nourishing the emaciated Ethiopian body politic with clean elections,..]]

The opposite is probanly true. “Freedom is Nothing Without Food!”.

Studies show “the future may look something like the 20th century in reverse”. The “unfree nations” will grow quickly than the “free nations” with their economic might.

Unfree China had a growth rate of 10.4 percent from 2007 to 2011. Malaysia’s GDP grew 7.2 percent from 2007 to 2011, Singapore’s GDP grew 14.5 percent from 1007 to 2011 and Ethiopia 10.1 percent from 2007 to 2011.

Obama understands the Meles Dictatorship better than Prof. Al; he knows that the prerequisite for a sustainable liberal democracy is producing Food first. That is why he took the chance he did, inviting the best & the brightest African leaders. The “unfree” governments such as Meles are well versed economic savies; They are working with a tasted formula that is, provide a good economy to keep citizens happy, and they understand that free-market economies work best. They are one step ahead of so called “Democracies”.

Dictatorships are not tied by the preferences of voters, for say to keep some welfare state, no tax for the rich nonsense and so on. Obama is living that and that is his delima.

We already know “Democracies” to stay in the play and catch up with the fast growing economies, may have to copy many of the business friendly policies of Dictatorships. I wouldn’t be surprised if many citizens of developed world be willing to “vote” for less freedom to get better standard of living. I am serious because such is the situation today.

Nearly all of the unfree nations are developing countries. History shows that they grow faster than mature nations. Being “unfree” is an economic advantage. Sorry – but that is the truth.

Thank You Prof. Alemayehu for enlightening article, that when I hear about this Green Revolution that was initiated by Prof. Jeffry Sacks, now revived By Bill Gates, which has resulted in a diminishing return for India and Bagladesh is now inroduced into Ethiopia. Outside those engaged in large scale mechanized farmers of cash crops and grains to export abroad the only multi-national companies were the Yara of Norway and Monsanto for GMO seeds. The ones you enumerated are too much to bear for Ethiopia where the majority are small farmers with no private ownership titles as one of the means of production to qualify as participants of private sectors in the Agricultual development and food security program. Even the grants from the Bill gates foundation has the hands of the council of Ministers, the Killil Adminstrators on it, instead of allocating the Agricultural Transformation Program,to be undertaken by Agicultural Extension Department of the Ministry of Agricuture, the Soil Conservation Department and the Aricultural Research Organization and Seed Production Stations of varities developed locally, instead of Agricultural Transformation Agency, looking at it from the perspectives of the Bill Gates Fondation.

While Bill Gates foundation helping the small farm holders for a short term is commendable, the beneficiaries are Monsanto of USA for seeds and Yara of Norway, not to mention the numerous multi-national companies, some of them dumping herbices and insecticides, in addition to fertilizers and the TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises are the beneficiaries of the market oulets created for these Multi-national companies, designated as Global Capitalism reinforced by the G-8, an Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, without even a project Proposal on the Agricutural Transformation projects, in food production, Nutrition and Health contributing tp productive capacity and happines of the Ethiopian Society and with sign of technology transfer from the developed nations to the developing with hand to mouth assistance programs.

Not only that the program of food security and nutrition and Agricutural Transformation Agency has too many cooks to spoil the broth and there are no Agricultural Trananformation projects to support it and make viable and it appears as a market outlet for products from the developing nations. This approach without any techneology transfer from the develping to the developed nations, in a do it yourself approach is about the same with humanitarian food aid, whcih similar to the saying “give a man fish he will feed for a day and teach a man how to fish, he will feed for a life time”.

Knowing the profile of the TPLF/eprdf regime, a coalition of ex-liberation fronts whose main ideology for the strrugle is the oppression of Nations and nationalities, but not class struggle by socialist standard; has created a new ideology of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism as a carry over from the Derg regime and its own Marxisit inclination, an ideology that has denied the silent majority of Ethiopians individual freedom, liberty and equality to surecede ethnic and secessionist rights, to say the least totaliarinism in the form of State capitalism has hindered freemarket capitalism and democracy to say the least about its human rights violations in seemingly democratic Country with no independent branches of the government.

Add to that profile, it created TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises with availability of land and capital and foreign corporations and countries with cheap land lease to say the least with degradation of the pristine lands and farm lands and depletion of the water resources, while they could managed the native Ethiopians under ecosytem management approach, and tillage and soil and water conservation practices for sustainable production. As it stands now it will the people at Nile Delta who will complaining about the fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides, less the soil along Ethiopians from polluter water for drinking at the strems and tributaries.

First, everyone knows that there are plenty of ‘studies’ on both sides and all around the equation. This is one of those things for which evidence is not conclusive and can’t be because there are too many variables and they are too complex. Yesterday they say democracy brings growth, tomorrow they say there’s no relation, then they say growth does not equal development, and then they ask what is democracy, what is dictatorship, and on and on. So don’t get carried away by reading a couple of googled articles. Take a step back and learn to see things in context.

Second, at the end of the day, we are all individuals first, and it would be good for us to first see things as individuals, before we pretend we are gods and know what’s best for ‘society’. We need to ask ourselves whether we personally want justice and freedom for ourselves. Do I want to live in a place like China or Ethiopia, where a government official can arbitrarily demolish my home or take away my land, ostensibly in the name of ‘development’? Or where, if I voice an opinion the government doesn’t like, I’ll get arrested AND convicted, again, in the name of ‘development’.

Moving on from ourselves, we need to ask whether we want our neighbours to live in such a place. That is, do we not care if our neighbours’ basic rights are abused, in the name of ‘development’. Is that the sort of community we want to live in? Is this something our conscience would be comfortable with?

Unfortunately, for some people, the answer is yes. If they saw their neighbour’s house being demolished for an ‘investor’, they would say ‘too bad – it’s his bad luck – but “we” need this for development’. This is the type of psychopathic thinking that brought us Stalin and Mao and our Mengistu, who along with their followers thought that sacrificing a few million for the ‘greater good’ was nothing. I say ‘psychopathic’ because this type of thinking requires an absence of conscience.

This is what Al Mariam is talking about. This is what Abebe Gellaw was talking about. Let’s not sacrifice our consciences for ideology.

To conclude as much individual rights precedes ethnic and secessionist rights, individual freedom, precedes economic development, because it is only free individuals with a contitution centered around the individual can form a democratic government that rules by the consent of the governed. The current alignment of parties along ethnic-lines and division of the land mass along ethnic lines with idea of self-rule and separate development is a recipe for secessinism and future boundry disputes, and Ethipian unity and sovereignity reaching a diminishing point of return. The silent majority of Ethiopians aspire for economic and political freedom while depending on food aid until the current regime is able with billions and billions of dollars on budgetary support, long term development programs to mitigate droughts and curb inflation and create jobs than Military build up, security forces and police and agazi forces to terrorise its own populations, whom it has given ethnic and secessionist rights in the constitution. These does maake those parties lined up with ethnic agenda does not make them look any better either interms of forming a truley democratic government, that precedes economic development with free market capitalism in place.

Could you give us any other rationale why you think a person who is leading these kinds of stuff is mentally functioning and let alone of capable formulating economic plan?

The above conditions must prevail for the Bill Gates Foundation with its donations, the G-8 Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition to have any significan impact on the silent majority of Ethiopians subjected to abject poverty, inflationary pressures, famine and most of all lack of individual freedom, liberty and equality ahead of ethnic and secessionist rights, Ethioppiawinet ahead of ethnicity, Ethiopian Nationalism and the sovereignity of Ethiopia.

“Freedom is Nothing Without Food!”. No one is surprised at your statement because slave such as your self can not see life beyond food.Inother, words you will forgo of your freedom for food. Such is your world view and to this end you live and work-hodam Banda! Why then you went to school? Why did you the liberal education, to hung your diploma in your living room? The family is the primary important institution that is responsible to feed its members. Not TPLF bandits not even any decent government is to be trusted for feeding families citizens. What Citizens are asking is not so much a foreign food hand out but freedom to choose the type of job they want to persue.Freedom to travel from one place to another, freedom to participate in economic activity without any restriction by the bandits, freedom to worship, freedom to assemble and be a apart of the national celebration etc. ,etc. The major role of any government is to safe guard the security of the nation from foreign invader, to guarantee law and order. As I have said before the developmental economy the TPLF mouthpiece speaks of is a TPLF state controlled economy to empower the two inter related giants: Midrok and EFFORT. And the reason DAWI cry about this mantra is because he desperately wants to buy time so that TPLF liquidate everything in Ethiopia in to foreign currency as Dr.Tecola has said in one of his recent article.

Dawi your loyalty for the dying regime is not taking you anywhere.TPLF has never been truth to anything. From its inception its history has been fraud. May be the original members, who become victims of Legese factions might have had good intentions. However after their illumination and the ascendency of Sibhat,Legese,Siyum,Abye clan everything is about how to bankrupt Ethiopia.Dont ever think Ethiopians are stupid they know ,and are ready to unshackle themselves from the grip of TPLF pariah.

I agree with you. Countries such as Ethiopia need fair and free elections more than western style democracy. Any thing originated from the west is full of neocolonial ideologies which are fatal to African nations. The biggest problem of the Meles admin is their failure to accept free elections and their dependence on policies originated from the west

While the Near Eastern Asian Countries are indulging with the exploitations with the land resources and both oil and land resources by China as private sector investors in Africa and particularly in Ethiopia and other three model counties, along with TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises; the Western democratic nations on the other hand in the form of G-8 Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition are boosting market outlet in Africa for the multi-national corporations in terms of heavy duty and tractors to clear the forest and woodlands in Ethiopia and other African counties, where in both cases there is no any form of technology transfer to the Ethiopians and Ethiopia. While the former reflects exploitation, possibly neo-colonization in collaboration with TPLF/eprdf regime, and the latter reflects spreading the influence of Global Capitalism in Africa. If individual freedom, liberty and equality prevails over ethnic and secessionist rights and if Ethiopiawinet prevails over ethnicity and Ethiopian Nationalism, where Ethiopia is governed as one nation , one flag and one language and religion, where other religions are tolerated on the basis of the concept “haimanot yeil new hagergin yegara nat” under a democratic not ethnic rule, with independent braches of government with free market capitalism for the private sectors in the country, then Global Capitalism may accepted as world order of global community, other wise the country and silent majority Ethiopians will be suffering from the exploitative investors from the East and dumping ground for products from the West with the Ethiopians being in the drivers seat, having mastered the technology and enterpreurship from their home base, so that Ethiopia could develop its own varieties, produce seeds, and initiate private large scale farmers of its own that mange the resources under ecosystem approach with minimal tillage, soil and water conservation practices, and assist the small farm holders to follow the same practice plus raising crops under minimal fertilser use in a companion cropping system to raise pructivity and increase the grazing area of the farm holdings with the involvement of the Extension Service and soil and water conservation department and the Agricultural Research Organization and the Ministry of Finance/UNDP over the projects, with no intensive government involvement with project proposals in place to implement to bring about tangible results. That is what the saying implies “yehagerun bere be hageru Gebere”.

The postings in this and other Habasha webs have been extremely negative and full of slanders and character assassination. I am posting this with the hope of changing this and helping people to stop arguing and fighting on petty issues and to start dreaming big and positive on the future of this rich and beautiful region of ours. So, let’s imagine of a confederation of Northeast Africa States, including Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia. Some would argue that the constituent parts of the confederation should be Oromia, Amhara, Tigrai, Southern nationalities, Beneshangul, Afar, etc..Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia. Others would even argue that Kenya and Uganda should be included. I don’t think this will be of a problem and the most important thing and foundation of the confederation is the constitution. The constitution should provide for an environment where all people in the region live in peace and economic progress. Where each member of the society develop his/her potential to the maximum and contribute to the economic and social progress of the entire confederation and the improvement of standard of living and quality of life of the citizens. Where each nation and nationality protects, practice and developed its culture and language to the maximum. Where the responsibility and authority of the federal and state government is clearly defined. Where the authority and responsibility of the judicial, legislative and executive branch of the government, both at the federal and state level, is clearly defined and segregated. This is achievable! We only need to bring our heads together and think big and positive.

[...This is what Al Mariam is talking about. This is what Abebe Gellaw was talking about. Let’s not sacrifice our consciences for ideology...]

You are correct “liberal Democracy” now may serve you, I, Abebe and others today however, as the Chinese are moving away from old communist values to Nationalism “Asian values” energized by the fast modernization of Singapore, Malaysia etc. things will all get there. We don’t need to be selfish.

I think the Meles Dictatorship has moved theoretically to build Ethiopian national values for a while and in practice projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest Hydro funded by the government and its people is its way of showing where its heading for those who aspire Ethiopian Unity. I see folks of all nationalities very excited of such monumental national project.

I understand what you are saying but the “Chinese model” played key roles in setting economic policy, building government institutions, regulating FDI, and protecting itself from global financial disasters etc.. Such policies worked and the Chinese people are better off than before; they live longer read, write, build houses, enjoy high standard of living.

As you described individual rights may have not been respected because development is the priority but that is a reasonable trade off. On the other hand, I think as Meles said Democracy being good on its own right there is no reason Ethiopia can’t improve by learning from the suffering the Chinese & other people endured during development.

All in all I don’t think one has to be a rocket scientist to figure what model would bring the fastest development to our country.

Why would Meles liquidate EFFORT and run away from a nation where he has lived most of his life? For what? What you are saying just doesn’t make sense.

Why don’t you see his legacy is too much entangled to the region and it will be stupid for him to change course at this stage of his life to do what Dr. Tecola did; immigrate to another place.

And I don’t think he is a stupid man. I don’t see him doing Mengistu on us either. Contrary to what many of you believe, IMO, Meles is way more nationalist than Dictator Mengestu. He is just a practical man & trying to do the right thing.

    How are you Dawi
I do not understand why we become so silly devoid of wisdom and commonsense.
And I do not understand why we want to fall to the narrow trapping thoughts of Freedom Vs Food. This sort of polarized black and white thinking is just like to force some one to automatically choose at ease between your wife and your kids or like to choose between your mother and your father or to choose between edible bread/Injera and drinkable water. This sort of polarized black and white thinking is even like “which comes first? the egg or hen?” conundrum. So let’s not as such make it a self-centered political issue as it is so straightforward human, natural as well as social phenomenon that we experience it in our daily life. (Stable Emotional and Mental State) መሆን ያለብን መሰለኝ፡፡እውነቴን ነው የምነግርህ ስር በሰደደና በተስፋፋ የእልህ ስሜት ሀገርና ህዝብ ያን ያህል አይመራም፡፡ምናልባት ጦርነትን በእልህ ልትዋጋ ትችላለህ ያም ቢሆን እውስጥህ እውነት ካለ ነው በስተመጨረሻ አሸናፊና ውጤታማ የምትሆነው፡፡እልህ አንድ የተወሰነ ትልቅ እውነትን ይዘን ሲሆን ነው ውጤታማ የሚሆነው፡፡እረ እንዲያውም ጥበብና ማስተዋል ከሌለን እውነትንም ጭምር በእልህ ልናስኬደው ያን ያህል አይቻልም፡፡ስለዚህም ይህ የእልህ አካሄድም እጅግ ሲበዛ አፍራሽና አድካሚ ነገር ነው፡፡በስተመጨረሻም “Dying to Win” አይነት ነው የሚሆነው፡፡That means we may ‘win’ externally our alleged enemy or rival but deep inside we are dead in sprit, virtues and essence of humanity. For whom you prove your worth? So there is no any sane meaningful purposeful and vital destiny Meles can prove and achieve for himself as long as he is against the nation that is Ethiopia, Ethiopians and Ethiopiawinet. He is striving destructively to prove his worth by being so anti-Ethiopia anti-Ethiopians and anti-Ethiopiawinet and eventually by labeling and making the classical essence of Ethiopia, Ethiopians and Ethiopiawinet such a worthless stuff. It does not make sense what sort of genius can he have possibly as long as he can not live in harmony and solidarity with the nation he claims he belong to and is ruling. (Classical and Eternal Intrinsic Virtues or Values) የሚመነጩ ናቸው፡፡እንዲያውም በቅዱስ መፅሀፍ አንደኛ ቆሮንጦስ ምዕራፍ 13 እንደዚህ ነው የተባለው፡፡

And indeed the very odd thing that this nation Ethiopia has experienced for the last 21 years is such very perplexing tragedy. And indeed this is live witnessed from the very beginning when Meles blatantly sabotages the issue of port Assab that has led this nation to become landlocked for the first time in history. And this blatant sabotage and betrayal deep inside originates from lack of proper love, loyalty and respect for own nation. If some one has proper love, loyalty and respect for own nation then he/she dose not engage in perpetual hypocrisy and does not become a perpetual pathological liar. If some one has proper love, loyalty and respect for own nation then he/she dose not take the worth of artificial material things as greater than that of the very worth of his/her peoples and citizens humanity and dignity. Dawi we pretty well knew that the humanity and dignity of Ethiopians is worthless in the mind of Meles. How on earth I accept such dehumanizing psychopathic genius to lead this nation? Dear Dawi please ASAP stop this sort of delusional propagandizing of Meles’s misleading bogus agenda of developmental-state if you have the slightest love respect and loyalty for this historical nation.

Therefore, from now onwards your perpetual propagandizing dissemination of bogus Developmental-State, in my view, is deemed as such a heinous blatant disregard for we Ethiopians and hence it is deemed as dehumanizing of we Ethiopians. In my view we Ethiopians, despite all our flaws and that of the issue of bogus democracy, have our own dignity and integrity. The main problem with Meles is to accept this bitter blatant reality. And as long as Meles failed to accept this bitter blatant reality then he is always in a state of clinical insanity which inevitably results in catastrophic destruction and chaos. So this insane man and may be you, his ardent supporter, better come to your own true sense before you talk any other agenda like the issue of ‘developmental-state’. A nation needs not only a leader with a brain but also some one with a heart. Yes not only needed a brain that devises marvelous constructive or dire destructive ideas but also a heart that loves respects and trusts based on humanity. Meles as a stooge servant of global capitalism and foreign forces then his loyalty respect and love is for foreign interests not for the nation Ethiopia.
So he is not able to provide us both bread and freedom. And hence the bitter reality is that there is no even choice between bread and freedom. And the choice is between starvation/oppression and inevitable death. And the choice is between starvation/oppression and inevitable migration. And the choice is between starvation/oppression and ethnic deportation. And indeed there is no such a thing as “freedom with out bread” or “bread without freedom” issue in Ethiopia. And the very cause of this perplexing tragedy mainly originates from the fact that Meles is characteristically or inherently Anti-Ethiopia, Anti-Ethiopiawinet and Anti-Ethiopians who do not have the slightest love, respect and loyalty for nation Ethiopia. And that is the very reason he is such a perfect unprecedented stooge client-regime in Ethiopian history. And that is why he failed us to this sort of misery and destruction though he thinks so that we failed him. Well indeed, eventually, it is all of us who tragically fail as a nation.

    Charity begins at home!!!

    God Bless Ethiopia!!!

Dawi, there you go again, theorizing. Talking about theories and ideologies is a way of avoiding looking directly at people’s pain and suffering. It is a way of avoiding our own conscience. It is a way of looking at people as numbers – statistics – instead of real people. That is why when Soviet officials were confronted with human rights abuses, they always replied by theorizing. They wanted badly to avoid looking at people as humans. Sorry, I’m not interested in this. I’m interested in real life.

In real life, people are paying a price, sometimes with their lives, for these ideologies. In real life, people are getting kicked off their land, they are not getting justice from the courts, they are being killed, etc.

So the question for each and every one of us is not which theory, development, or political model is best. Again, we are not politicians. First we are human beings. Then members of families, then communities, then countries. So first let us see if we are fulfilling our role as human beings. Do we know the basics – the difference between right and wrong, for example?!! Do we recognize that people getting their land taken away, not receiving justice, being killed or imprisoned for speaking their mind – do we recognize that this is bad?

If we don’t know the basic rights and wrongs, then we cannot think about family, community, or country, can we?! We have to first work on ourselves, learn to listen to our conscience, learn the basics. Then we can move on. Then we can theorize!!

This has nothing to do with the theory of liberal democracy. It has to do with basic human values of right and wrong.

“…his legacy is too much entangled to the region and it will be stupid for him to change course at this stage of his life to do what Dr. Tecola did; immigrate to another place…. I don’t see him doing Mengistu on us either,.. Contrary to what many of you believe, IMO, Meles is way more nationalist, He is just a practical man & trying to do the right thing.”

The last statment in your quotation reads, ‘he is just a practical man $ trying to do the right thing. ‘Perhaps this statement is partially true but the question is to whom is he doing the right thing to the people of Ethiopia or is chasing hidden agenda such as to satiate his ulterior motive? In spite of your admiration of Melese the record shows to the contray.According to Richard Dowden,

“In an interview last week Meles told me he did not know of a single village in the whole country that voted for the opposition.

This is subtle totalitarianism, dubbed ‘Authoritarian Developmentalism’ by some. If you do what the government says, you get assistance – land, water, services. If you don’t, you get nothing. The basic principles of political freedom enshrined in the constitution are frequently undermined by subtle edicts from government departments. Press freedom is clearly spelt out and recently a minor ruling stated that printers must take responsibility for everything they publish and can refuse to print anything the government might consider illegal. Hardly a devastating blow to press freedom you might think until you discover that the only presses in Ethiopia capable of printing newspapers are government-owned.”

No one doubts he is advancing a plan, but whose interest is being advanced under this agenda? Keep riding what Mr. Dowden said in his follow up interview. Again according to Dowden,

“As he told me: “The criticism we had in the past was that we were crazy Marxists. Now we are accused of selling the family spoons to foreigners. It’s a balance…
He fiercely defends his policies, in the face of Western NGO criticism, that this development is environmentally unsound and indigenous people have been removed forcibly from their land. He insists that in every case they were consulted, dismissing a report by the Oakland Institute in the US which said people had been forcibly removed as “bullshit”. When I suggest that pastoralists should be allowed to continue their nomadic way of life, he says I am a romantic westerner…” It is not just Mr.Rihard Dowden interview, but Mr.Grham Peebles unmasks the real Melese.

The point that needs to be stressed here is this Melese lived all his life conspiring, ultimately to make himself rich, but often using political organizations to achieve this end. He never had any national, I even think his rhetoric about tribalism is shallow; he is using it to get support to his agenda. In the light of my statement above the statement you made about him claiming he is nationalist hardly sticks. His own admission to Mr. Dowden that he has been accused of being Marxist in the past and, now he is being criticized for leasing large tract of land to foreign developers conforms the view that his aim is clear remain in power and get fat at the expense of Ethiopians.

It is not that for lack of knowledge that you decided to side with him but perhaps because you share his core value: to see the perpetual dictatorship of Legese.

If the relationship you have with Melese be such it is because it is meant to be. My consolation in this knows the truth of GOD.

1- “They that forsake the law praise the wicked; but such as keep the law contends with them.” Pr.28:4
2-”As a roaring lion and a ranging bear, [So is] a wicked ruler over a poor people”.Pr.28:15
You ridiculed Dr.Tecola for his migration. By the way it is perfectly right to run away from evil company. In doing so he can clearly say I am innocent from the crime of bloody Melese.

Continuing on the third facet of multi-national forign corporations, “The “new Alliance” by dozons of global food companies” that you stipulated, unless they are involved in Commodity Futures Market, they may not have been involved as private sector investors in the production of cash and food crops, but may be involved as end users or market outlets for the food crops bought at the commodity futures market for processing into packaged foods, which I believe should have been handled by the developing African Countries by way of technology transfer and enterpreneurship with regard to these industries, instead of exporting food grains and cash crops, that would have allowed these countries to create jobs in their respective countries in a free maket capitalism economic model, while the multi-national corporations may be involved in helping these industries to florish locally to induce a favorably impact of global capitalism.

The other aspect and role of the “mulitnational food conglomerates” is humanitarian aid of for short term relief, which makes Ethiopia dependent on aid, without a precondition to entice the TPLF/eprdf regime to produce food grsins to mitigate droughts and famine with long term development aid program to produce grains under irrigation by supplying tractors, trasportation vechicles and granneries in addition to Agrictural Transformation Projects of the small farm holders and thier health and nutition. The prequisites to implementations of these programs are economic and political freedom for the silent majority of Ethiopians, which could only achieved by dismantling ethnic feredralism, secessionism and totaliarinism, hindering individual freedom, liberty and equality to have precedence over ethnic and secssionist rights, and totaliarinism with state capitalism, hindering private ownership and free market capitalism and democracy, where by the small farm holders and medium and large scale private farms will run their farms as a business model rather than substistence farming model with microfinancing in place with the tranfer of technology to the farmers through the extension agents, the soil and water conservation service and the Agricultural Research Organizations and the availability of capital to run their farms and borrowing money against their land.

[[.. Meles blatantly sabotages the issue of port Assab that has led this nation to become landlocked for the first time in history….and betrayal deep inside originates from lack of proper love, loyalty and respect for own nation…]]

I think we should say the “Left” of the student movement “sabotaged the issue of Assab”. Most of us supported EPLF; and considered it as “Angafaw” Ethiopian liberation movement”? EPRP took an opportunist stand of studying whether Eritrea is a “Colonial” or “National” question for ever. I don’t think they finished that study yet but, the world has moved on.

Woyane took the ultimate opportunist stand by endorsing “colonial” and helped thy selves to reach Arat Kilo. That is history.

If one labels the action as deep inside hate or “lack of proper love, loyalty and respect to country”; such hate must have been deep inside the Ethiopian Student Movement as a whole not just one individual.

As pragmatic man Meles continued by salvaging what is left of the aftermath of Ethiopian left. He pushed Isayas out because Isayas works and acts like a 19th century Ethiopian but what we need is a 21st century leadership to move us to the modern world. It took a long time for Meles to get where he is now. I think we have to understand the Meles Dictatorship is qualitatively advanced than the old Woyane.

What is so “bogus” of Ethiopian “Developmental-State”?

Is it or not is what we should ask? IMF and World Bank and others who seem to be in love of the “China model” these days are endorsing it as legit. Obama despite the opposition invited him to his forum to speak. Bill Gates is putting his repetition & cash online by endorsing Meles’s leadership. Should I go on?

How do you judge “love” for country? In my book if one works day and night to develop a scheme to leapfrog even China, that is my man. That is done for the love of his people. I wouldn’t do what he does for no amount of money. If he works hard to bring FDI to develop land that we have not even be able to feed ourselves with it for decades, what is it to complain because it may even kick start the sleeping giant of a country. Some people will be displaced for the good of the whole. So what? They are not starving and their children wouldn’t suffer anymore. Look at some museums in the States and you would see how many people are buried alive to build the simplest bridges by today’s standard. They didn’t have the proper tools or know how but, their children today are doing a lot better.

The problem with food shortage in Ethiopia in African and other developing nations is that it is unnecessarily becoming a new mode lucrative profiteering business. Because food does not give so much spare times to live without it. So, food must be bought what ever the price can be as long as it is a survival issue. And due to this, starting around 2007, the price food has fallen to the grips of greedy and inhuman global food price speculators who are cashing such an amazing profit out of it. If I have some closes or some other material things other than food the I can survive for some time without necessarily buying such items, if I can not afford them to buy extra items. But incase food it is not like that and I have to buy at any price in order to survive. So in some way it is a strategic shift of global capitalism to make such a greedy and inhuman profiteering out of the food business, evolving as lucrative, at the expense of the misery of the poor mass. So this new emerging lucrative food business is in some way part of a grand plan of strategically consolidating the power and capital of global capitalism by controlling the poor mass through food. So the irony behind this tragic scenario regarding food is to systematically impoverish the mass and then consolidate the capital and power of Global Capitalism. So the skyrocketing of food price is more of deliberate than supply shortage to systematically impoverish and weaken the mass and at the expense of this tragedy to consolidate the capital and power of Global Capitalism. With regard to food, we have evolved to export every thing and in return we import every thing. Why? This is in order for any transaction of food business to pass through the business chain of global food speculator cartels. We export relatively pure and organic foods and in return we import garbage inorganic and health hazardous foods. Why? That is how mafia style and corrupt business for profiteering is carried out for the sake of the few parasitic rent-seeking in the heydays era of global capitalism. But in between the mass suffers a miserable life. That is why a saying goes on that “Behind every fortune there is a crime.” The food crisis in Ethiopia and Africa is also more of a deliberate heinous agenda to control the mass. Around 2005 the price of one quintal of teff is around 400 birr on average. Today it is around 1500 on average. The price of oil was around 12 birr per litter but now it is around 40 birr. The price of one kilo of meat was around 30 birr but now it has become 100 or more per killo. The same is true for other items in that every thing has at least 300 percent or three fold increases.
If the economy is to grow say by average 10 percent annually as is claimed, then in 7 years it has a maximum of say 100 percent cumulative increase with reference to 2005.However the price increase and its associated inflation is more than 300 percent cumulative increase on many decisive and vital consumable items. The population increase with reference to 2005, I guess can not be more than 15 million which can be around 25 percent increase. Even recently the government claimed that it has 300 percent or 3 fold agricultural product increases in the last 10 years, well which is so funny. So taking this all rough lay man estimations, including TPLF’s claim of growth, then how comes the price of food to triple in 7 years unless it is more of a deliberate global intrigue than supply shortage, by those few in order to impoverish, weaken and control the mass. Indeed in Ethiopia there is some shortage but the deliberate intrigue for profiteering outweighs more than the supply shortage to contribute for such unprecedented price escalation. One of the means to control resources in a way to make them accessible resources for the very few rent seeking parasitic parts of the society and their rent-seeking modus-operandi is to control the source of money creation and supply and then to systematically commit “Asset-Grab”. TPLF as regime is the one who primarily controls the local currency money creation and supply. TPLF has such a heinous hidden agenda, now totally exposed as naked, of monopoly control (EFFORT in collaboration with MIDROC and other business affiliates) of the resources and economic sectors of the nation. And in order to do so one of the devious scheme is to print money and circulate it in its secluded food-chain beyond which the economy can carry it. The other thing related to such massive inflation is that TPLF wants to save looted money in foreign currency in foreign banks. And in order to do so then it has to print as much inflating worthless local currency as possible for such swapping of currencies. In order to bribe any Ethiopians to make them its loyal ally of dirty politics then it has to provide billions of birr for such opportunist Ethiopians who sell their soul for the sake of money. The other thing is think of the rapidly growing spying security apparatus devouring the resources of the nation. This part of the society, paid in billions birr, engaged in spying security apparatus is totally unproductive rent-seeking parasitic by nature but goes to market with huge money in pockets.
Perpetual devaluation of Birr against foreign currency that is incoherent with the existing nature of our economy is another cause of inflation. We are more of importers that exporters and due to this devaluation harms the economy severely. And in fact due to this we are now forced to export everything of food items we have in order to balance this at the expense of our misery in hunger. The poor working class that receives monthly wages that is incoherent with our corrupt monetary policy can not cope up with the aggravating living conditions. Meles just to cerate the fantasy and illusion of economic development he simply prints money to play games with numbers. The tragedy is that the money circulation is monopolized in order to benefit the parasitic secluded food-chain of TPLFites for the aim of Asset-Grab. So there is money for very few privileged and there is no money for the majority. And the result is such crisis and misery for the mass. For those few who have ample money in pocket 100 birr is like 10 birr for them but for other poor mass it is still like 100 birr. And what we have to understand is that the system is devised in a way of pyramid so that very few privileged go up the ladder to the top of the pyramid while the majority poor mass is doomed and thrown to dust bins to the bottom of the pyramid. And indeed the money creation and supply is designed in a way to achieve this unjust and greedy inhuman target that favors the few privileged but disregards the majority mass. This is not revolutionary democracy and I laugh at those naive and gullible ones who label TPLF as revolutionary democrat and indeed I guess Meles also laughs inside at those who label him like that. It is pure capitalism. Look every system that advances the common goods of the public is systematically and gradually dismantled. Meles is selling of every government or public owned common goods (የቀበሌ ምግብ ቤቶችና መዝናኛዎች ሳይቀሩ) for private sector for the sake profiteering. Selam Girum:

[[.. And indeed there is no such a thing as “freedom with out bread” or “bread without freedom” issue in Ethiopia...]]

    I hear you man!

I am not a hard line advocate of “bread without freedom”; I am just convinced one can think clearly with a full stomach. The funny thing is most diaspora don’t have time to participate in the “freedom” of the WEST but, are willing to work 2 jobs to make a living and save money and yet they advice folks back home to practice “freedom” with an empty stomach. Off course those who came to the US with some kind of scholarship don’t know any better because there “food” is paid for by US tax payers.

[[..That is why when Soviet officials were confronted with human rights abuses, they always replied by theorizing. They wanted badly to avoid looking at people as humans. Sorry, I’m not interested in this. I’m interested in real life...]]

The “Soviets looking people as humans” as in Perestroika times you mean? Where did “real life”, meaning “freedom” alone take them? To Extinction.

Gorbachev couldn’t take the necessary steps toward economic liberalization, because as a logical part of the democratic political process [freedom] he couldn’t break directly with the dinosaurs in the communist party, so the “Soviets” were over.

So what you are saying is I don’t care about that but I am only just interested in “real life”. I suppose, you can live your life that way but, leaders like Meles has the responsibility of learning from history.

And the Chinese dealing with a similar problem as the Soviets came out smelling like roses.

By claining more strved Ethiopians, food insecurity etc, gives two benefits for TPLF and multinational corporations: one, the claim to fund makes it look like they are giving out of humanitarian gesture in fact it is to get the tPLF to continue the oppression through military and media control as more lands are being given away to foreingers. Two, this will allow mulitnational corporations and USAID to continue to provide GMO food aid to Ethiopians and make them completely dependent on this so that farmers will stop producing food. That is why the children of farmers in mass with no jobs are being thrown out of Ethiopia and die on waters, that is why their daughters are forced to slave to Arabs come back in coffints, raped and abused, that is why the children of Ethiopa are being bought in the west. Next, prop up the misinforamtion on too much population, the above methods to depopulate Ethiopians and through other means of spreading diseases, are being depopulate it to make a way for mulitnational corporations to take over. Take a look at the unmaking of Panama. Every businesses, banking, agricutlure etc, is controlled by outsiders you would think there are no Panamanians. Of course you will see those greedy Panamanians working along with these corporations. Every Western businesses small or not are in Panama, so it has become typical banana republic. This is the goal. It will not do anything for any Ethiopians. In the first place why do we want hand outs when we want to work and prosper by ourselves?

Anon, Anonymous, Desalegn, Girum etc. very well said. If what Al Mariam is said true, it is now fully confirmed Ethiopia is under neocolonization. Don’t think millions of people in China, India, Bangladesh following this model are free. But look their own people however is very much participating while our people are being kicked out to make a way for vultures like companies from India, Saudi, China, West this by itself should make one question they are giving their own sovereignty. I believe the Indians and China may act like free but they are not free. Who is really controlling the mass is the mulitnational corporations seemingly by buidling shiny busildings, roads will divert attention with what is really going on.

Correct me if I’m wrong, Dawi, but you don’t seem the least bit interested in the suffering of people in Ethiopia. It seems you’d rather talk about how the abstract ‘China’ is better off than the abstract ‘Russia’. The tens of millions of Chinese who were forced off their land because of the Three Gorges Dam are to you just collateral damage. Not human beings with lives just as valuable as yours. Perhaps you are willing to exchange your life with theirs, then? Sacrifice your life for a greater China. Volunteer your rights away, if you’d like. That’s fine by me. But in my humble opinion, I don’t think we can force others to sacrifice their lives for some ‘greater good’ of our own imagination.

Dawi, if you read a story about a school principal whose school became famous because his students scored the highest marks in the land, no doubt you’d say, ‘What a great principal! What a great leader! What a great teaching philosophy!’ But if then you found out that this principal was abusing a few of his students, would you still say, ‘What a great principal! What a great teaching philosophy!’ After all, most of the students were successful. What’s the problem if a few are sacrificed for this ‘success’? Would your conscience permit you to think this way?

I don’t think so. I would hope not.

In the same way, as I’ve said before, we should not, we cannot, as human beings, overlook the human rights abuses in Ethiopia and instead talk about ‘what a great leader Meles is!’

I know it’s a trap that’s very easy to fall into. I speak for myself when I say this. From afar, it is easy, it is easier to avoid looking at people as people and instead to look at them as statistics or abstract ideas. But ultimately, this approach makes us less human.

You are all hammering on totaliarinism with State Capitalism aspect of the economic model is following like the BRIC countries. You are leaving out ethnic federalism and secessionism, of the three ideologies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism stipulated in the constitution, adivide and rule policy in the colonialist and /or for the most part the appartheid System of South Africa of self rule and separate development, while having the economic and political controll of the country including private land ownership under TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises. Even at that: the self-rule and separate development had been illusive to the teletafi (ethnic federalist) and loyalist opposition parties now lined as OPDF/EFDF/fdre (ethnic federalist) parties, which are in direct and indirect support of the constituion are bargaining for equal rights of Killil Mengistat “(yekill Mengistat yekulent Mebit indikeber)” and /or by declaring that we do not have problem with ethnic federalism (and secessionism), but we do not have them TPLF dictate ove us”, which suggests no change in the constituiton, in the same way the prcusor to UDJP declared in their Press Release “no change but durable democracy in a country where economic development comes befors democracy in the East Asian Style in the form totaliarinism with State Capitalism economic model, a twist of command control economy of Communist countries.

These three ideologies have precluded individual freedom, liberty and equality in favor of ethnic and secessionist rights, human rights violations by the TPLF/eprdf regime has been a common denominator between those with the goals with the goals national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians and those party coalitions lenainig towards the objectives for ethnic and or secessionist rights, and democracy, without knowing one can not supperimpose democracy over ethnocracy/ethnic rule.

As much the constitution is driving force for running the government, without a change in the constitution centered around the individual freedom, liberty and equality, Ethiopian Nationalism and the sovereignity of Ethiopia and original provinces restored and regained as federated states including Eritrea, there will never be a democratic rule and or democratic government and therefore democracy itself, so I believe. For that look no further than the constitution of the United States, which is availble to emulate than to cry for democracy as if democracy is commodity to import from the democratic countries, much in the same the elites imported communism foreign to Ethiopian cultures and traditions, while a part of the student movement brought about a change in land reform and perhaps unfullfiled workers rights as part of the class struggle, the other aspect of student movement bent on oppression of the nations and nationalities created ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism as the major frame of the constitution, ideologies hindering individual freedom, liberty and equality to have precedence over ethnic and secessionist rights, since both are mutually exclusive, that if the individual rights are respective the ethnic rights follow through but not the other way around, the individual being a unity of family and/or the society, where the ethnic groups live freely and harmoniously in their own niche like animal species following the natural and man made laws.

Woyane took the ultimate opportunist stand by endorsing “colonial” and helped thy selves to reach Arat Kilo. That is history.
Yes quite true which I agree with.
But why become so much opportunist to this extent of tragic destruction?

Girum! from your profiling of the leadership of the current regime, I acknoledge the last half, pertaining to the exploitations, political and economic strangle hold of the country and its people by TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises and foreign corporations and cadres in a mix of free market capitalism and State capitalism for TPLF and its affiliates for its surrogates and global capitalism for the foreign corporations.

In the past you were using global capitalism, an economic model that brings many nations under one community via the information technologies, I presume. From what I understand from Prof. Alemayehu’s expose that these multinational corporations are involved in the humanitarian aid for short term relief and make the developping countries as market outlets for seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, for the small farmholders bull dozers, tractors for the for the private sector by foreign and local enterpreneurs to the detriment of the local inhabitants and the depetion of water and soil resources in the name of green revoltion, which has a diminishing return for the country and its people, as an adjunct to TPLF and TOLF affiliated enterprises, you just alluded to, without any assistance in the form of the transfer of technology to the local private sector and small farm holdings interms of improving the plow share, soil and water and tillage practices to raise productivity, increase water and soil retention and reduce loss of soil through runnoff into streams and rivers and allow for private ownership of land to run farming as a business model.
