African Leader’s Death Highlights Gap Between U.S. Interests and Its Ideals By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN New York Times.

August 21st, 2012 Print Print Email Email

LIBREVILLE, Gabon — There was probably no leader on the African continent who exemplified the conflict between the American government’s interests and its highest ideals better than Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia.

Mr. Meles, who died on Monday after more than 20 years in power, played the American battle against terrorism brilliantly, painting Ethiopia, a country with a long and storied Christian history, as being on the front lines against Islamist extremism. He extracted prized intelligence, serious diplomatic support and millions of dollars in aid from the United States in exchange for his cooperation against militants in the volatile Horn of Africa, an area of prime concern for Washington.

But he was notoriously repressive, undermining President Obama’s maxim that “Africa doesn’t need strongmen, it needs strong institutions.”

Mr. Meles was undoubtedly a strongman. Despite being one of the United States’ closest allies on the continent, Mr. Meles repeatedly jailed dissidents and journalists, intimidated opponents and their supporters to win mind-bogglingly one-sided elections, and oversaw brutal campaigns in restive areas of the country where the Ethiopian military has raped and killed many civilians.

No matter that Ethiopia receives more than $800 million in American aid annually. Mr. Meles even went as far as jamming the signal of Voice of America because he did not like its broadcasts. Human rights groups have been urging the United States to cut aid to Ethiopia for years.

So now that he is gone, will the gap between American strategic and ideological goals narrow at all in this complex, pivotal country?

“There is an opportunity here,” said Leslie Lefkow, a researcher with Human Rights Watch. “If donors are shrewd, they will use the opportunity that this presents to push a much stronger and bolder human rights stance and need for reform.”

Most analysts do not expect any sudden moves, however. After Mr. Meles’s death, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised his “personal commitment” to lifting Ethiopia’s economy and “his role in promoting peace and security in the region.” But she made no mention of his rights record and gave only a veiled reference to supporting “democracy and human rights” in Ethiopia. She also made it clear that the interest in “regional security” had not changed.

One senior American official said Tuesday that “this does not affect policy in the short term,” but he added that “there are a number of unknowns.”

One relative unknown is the man now picked to lead the second-largest country in Africa, Hailemariam Desalegn, who was the foreign minister, deputy prime minister and a Meles acolyte. Though he is from a different ethnic group, the Welayta, he is believed to be a safe choice to protect the interests of Mr. Meles’s Tigrayan minority, which has dominated the Ethiopian economy and political scene since 1991, leading many other ethnic groups to complain about being boxed out and some even to take up arms.

Dan Connell, an American author and professor, interviewed Mr. Meles in June and said it sounded as if he was preparing to die. “He seemed focused on wrapping up a number of major projects as if he were aware the end was near,” Mr. Connell said.

The projects included the modernization of the country’s road network and building big dams; pushing large-scale foreign investment in agriculture (which many rights groups say threatens fragile indigenous groups); and trying to wrap up the war with Eritrea, once a province of Ethiopia that broke away and declared independence in the 1990s.

“Meles knew his days were numbered,” Mr. Connell said.

It is hard to overstate Ethiopia’s role in the region — it was never a colony, after all, though it was briefly occupied by the Italians — and the respect Mr. Meles carried around the continent.

“Whether one was a friend or critic of Mr. Meles,” said Johnnie Carson, the assistant secretary for African affairs at the State Department, “the consensus around Africa is that Africa has lost one of its greatest intellectual leaders.” Mr. Carson added that “no question there was a need for greater democratization” and “yes, more work needs to be done in that area.”

Recently, Mr. Meles had been pushing the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan to make peace. On Tuesday, the government of South Sudan declared three days of mourning, with flags flown at half-staff. “His actions will be missed,” said Barnaba Marial Benjamin, spokesman for the South Sudanese government.

Ethiopia is hardly alone in raising difficult questions on how the United States should balance interests and principles.

Saudi Arabia is an obvious example, a country where women are deprived of many rights and there is almost no religious freedom. Still, it remains one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East for a simple reason: oil.

In Africa, the United States cooperates with several governments that are essentially one-party states, dominated by a single man, despite a commitment to promoting democracy.

John Prendergast, co-founder of the Enough Project, an anti-genocide effort, said that Mr. Meles’s death “accentuates a vexing policy quandary” that the United States faces with Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan. “All of them have served American interests or have a strong U.S. constituency, but all have deeply troubling human rights records,” he said.

Ethiopia has never been an easy place to rule. It is big, poor, famine-stricken, about half Christian and half Muslim, surrounded by enemies and full of heavily armed separatist factions. Ethiopia’s own increasingly outspoken Muslim population is one reason Mr. Meles saw eye to eye with the United States on Somalia next door.

But when the United States and Ethiopia teamed up in late 2006 and early 2007 to oust an Islamist movement that had gained control of most of Somalia, the Islamists morphed into a more dangerous group, the Shabab, getting support from all the Somalis who were furious that Ethiopia had invaded their country.

Donor nations, including the United States, then ended up working with several of the Islamist leaders they previously had been trying to kill or capture, after it became clear that the Islamists had the most popular support inside Somalia.

Seeye Abraha Hagos, a former medical school classmate and rebel colleague of Mr. Meles who later split with him and was imprisoned for six years, said: “He was, in a way, the law of the land. He was the court of the land. There was no check and balance in the government.”

Mr. Hagos said it was not clear what was going to happen next. “They can take this as an opportunity for reconciliation, by relaxing the prohibitive environment,” he said. “Or they could try to maintain the status quo, and the country could be in trouble.”

    Jeffrey,

Bless you. Let us see. The West has seen the division of the Ethiopia’s society with the architects on top, TPLF, Shaebia and Egypt however it has turned a blind eye probably not really for terrorism reason but resources. Today, Ethiopia is at the brink. You could say Ethiopia is the most ally to West since Haile Selassie but todays relationshiop is different today. It has been helping and financing Liberation Fronts that demises Ethiopia. So which is it allies or foes? It is very confusing. I hope people like you, friends of Ethiopia will convince the West the danger that Ethiopia is going if they are trully concerned that is.

The entire article is almost contradictory in itself which eventually subtly reveals the very blatant truth that i have been alarming through out my comments in that Meles/TPLF has been indeed such a perfect servant stooge client-regime of the USA/West and the meta-governing and guiding principle of the USA/West is first “Its own Interest” then second “Its own Interest” and then 3rd “Its own Interest” and not as such human rights and/or democracy for the rest of 3rd world nations. Period. Human rights and/or democracy is just a double-standard Joker cards for USA/West wherein they play gambling and hypocrisy. Even when I say it is not as such to blame the West but rather I blame we Ethiopians who take and believe the mere double-standard and hypocritical rhetoric of the West regarding Human rights and/or democracy. So the problem is about us and not as such about the USA/West who are what they are naturally when it comes to their interest. Now the problem of the USA/West is not as such with regard to the death of their perfect servant stooge client-regime Meles but as to how to sustain the status-quo with regard to having such a perfect servant stooge client-regime.
There is mo long-lasting friendship with USA/West but rather long lasting interest.
So we have to stop undeservedly trusting USA/West as if they are guided by universal principles. As I said it above their universal guiding principles are first “Its own Interest” then second “Its own Interest” and then 3rd “Its own Interest” and not as such human rights and/or democracy for the rest of 3rd world nations. Period.

Legesse killed Meles 30 + years ago.

Meles died 30+ years ago and got his identity stolen by Legesse.

Legesse is the one who died now because the real Meles has died a long time ago.

Because Ethiopia has not raised her hands God has still waited to see that. We have to raised our hands. Raising hands is not to wear the sheet of cloth to the right or the left in smart way, bit it is to be obedient for his commandment he gave to people which says “I am the lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods beforee. You shall not make for yourself an idol or on theform of any thing in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the son o the fathers to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.” You go to people around yourown neighborhood and you can see the bad exercise of them which God completely hates. People are worshiping the mountains, revers, trees, stones, different hand made Idoles in the house, deads etc. To make the mater worse, the exercise is extreamly being done by those who are mentining the The gods word.

Tofday, Meles is dead may be we think this is the god ocation for change. Because we are bowing before idols, because we are killing our brothers for irrelevant political reasons in false, because we are lires that we need the power ithrough the bloodshade of thousands of innocent people, because we are far from the reality that we are selling our country and people for the sake of fame for others like Meles Zenawi have done to get the the smile face from western, because we need to be photographed with Tony Bliers or with Obama or with any others leaders, because we need it we are not turn our faces from their gates everyday like the Ginbot 7 leader in the day and in the night., because we are judging about which we do not have any idea badsed on our own motive and feeling, because we always deceive and not try to shape ourselves up based on The Holy God’s words and comands, the next of our move seems cloudy. I agree with some one saying that life is short, but we have to know that this is true for those who fought for theirown freedom and got power, like Meles and around him that those who have mourned as we see in the media. For prople like you and me, who live in trouble, the trouble because of the lack of justce, equality and freedom, what is the sake of the length of age in this world? Is that for to die in the battle of others that completely do not concern, but for the sake of others, for USA, for Britania etc. Today these nations lost the great leader. What do you expect from others, the fellowers, TPLF or EPRDF leaders or members. We need to raise our hands to God in truth to fall and roll it away. This word is not only for spiritual people, it is for politicians too.

I saw the palass people woyo and lamentation. That was not for Meles, that was for themselves. They are scared not to be drive away from around the next one. Those who collect money arenot scared. They have been sending their children iwith huge money, dollars through scholarship way. Today, they are becoming great in numbers with knowledge and huge money. in China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia etc., like they started the investment for theiown children by theirown children for theirown children. Whatever hapenned their children are outside, they them selves are in power and try to stay in power. If not it doee not matter. Everything in thie regime has been aranged. You and me must raise our hand. I my self has raised my hand.

We need to raise our hand, together, now. If not no way for change. Not us, believe me our children will be the same like us, the slave of their children. Remember and believe me the next rule will be harder and much more stronger and worse than before. I am the witness ,that some of their children are my friend, and I see how much they are touched by the death of Meles. They were very scared because they have thought that there may be something happens, like the Arab spring.

Please, first raise our hands for Gog and go the next move to say no, together. I say again Togather. If we do that I my self do not have anything to see back. I am ready to die for change, for freedom of the whole people, for freedom.

    Thank u so much

God help and give strangth to raise our hand.
God bleed our country and people.
    God bless me.

    God bless Ethiopia.

When western world discovered the weyane war lord they felt it is de ja vu for the horn of Africa recolonization again. Here is a war lord at the age of 36 who became a leader of 85 million people who is willing to do anything and everything he is being asked to do by westerners. If if is a loss it is the western world loss; NOT THE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE OR THE WHOLE HORN OF AFRICA.

I hope that Ethiopia is coming to a historical and decisive event. The death of Meles Zenawi realy oppens a better condusve political environment and ingeneral good governance. I assure you we are very tired about woynes repressive and wild political ruling ideology. It is a better time for Ethiopians and America to creat the right democratic government in the country. Now the ruling government lacks a lot of political and global demand and not capable to rule Ethiopia as a government. The government had commited many crimes against his peopel and the country. If America want to keep up their interests in the horn of Africa, This is my coal that America should come together and talk with all oppiositions groups and parties to create and organize new democratic government. If America stands to the people of Ethiopia it will be rewarding and very great credit for America.@DaDa

People, let us put our focus is that it is easy to blame West but in fact our willingness to divide OURSELVES by TPLF and Shaebia. The problems are thsoe who conspired with TPLF the so called pro ethnic group thining they will be better off with the system of TPLF. It is okay to propose something that beneftis ALL ethnic groups but to go radical is recipie for their own demise. Take for example OLF, it did diservice for its pepople by creating the same ethnic agenda. While it is enjoying itself in the West with welfare, it is risking the innocent people Oromos setting brother against brother. Today OLF is morphing into Islam extremism. It has gone as far as speaking for Ethiopia’s affairs such as the Jawar Mohammed who is speaking on behalf of Ethiopia, uh on behalf of Ethiopia? I thought they were anti Ethiopian also. So, this is an indication is that more and more anti Ethiopians are coming out and asserting themselves. This definitely has a hand of powerful people to promote anti Ethiopian agenda of course including Liberation Fronts.

    “President Barack Obama, USA

It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia. Prime Minister Meles deserves recognition for his lifelong contribution to Ethiopia’s development, particularly his unyielding commitment to Ethiopia’s poor. I met with Prime Minister Meles at the G-8 Summit in May and recall my personal admiration for his desire to lift millions of Ethiopians out of poverty through his drive for food security. I am also grateful for Prime Minister Meles’s service for peace and security in Africa, his contributions to the African Union, and his voice for Africa on the world stage. On behalf of the American people, I offer my condolences to Prime Minister Meles’ family and to the people of Ethiopia on this untimely loss, and confirm the U.S. Government’s commitment to our partnership with Ethiopia. Going forward, we encourage the Government of Ethiopia to enhance its support for development, democracy, regional stability and security, human rights, and prosperity for its people.”

    President Barack Obama,
There is a proverb in TIGRIGNA, ” ዝኣኽለንያ ጥሒነንስ ብኣለ ማርያም ይብላ!”

    President Barack Obama,
Please help us to get the money hidden in the USA under the Name of AZEB GOLA/Meles Zenawi, their Children and other money laundering persons, back to Ethiopia!

    Thank you!

Mr. Getleman, the way I perceive your concern is based on the gap between the Prime Minister’s alliance on counter terrorism and United States ideals on human right and democracy entrusted on the TPLF/eprdf regime of ex-liberation fronts of oppression of nations and nationalities and a constitution of ethnic and secessionist politics and/or policies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism, with no independent branches of the government and party alignments along ethnic agenda insteade of national agenda to as major flaw at very start.

As such the country has been goverened by those of ex-liberation fronts and not by those with national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality to supercede over ethnic and secessionist rights, much less free market capitalism and/or mixed economic model to the silent majority of Ethiopians that now available to TPLF and TPLF affiliated enterprises, cadres and foreign corporations.
Therefore there are two economic and political forces at logger head against each other as negatiove forces, represented by TPLF/eprdf, where the eprdf the teletafi (ethnic federalist) parties are direct supporters of ethnic federalism and the loyalist opposition (ethnic federalist), including Ex-TPLFites of Tigrai-Harena, and UDJP with a subset of the national agenda for human rights, democracy and justice, forming a front called OPDF/EFDF/fdre, a mirror image of TPLF/eprdf; where human rights is a common denominator being the USA’s ideal unfullfiled during the reign of the Prime Minister of Meles Zenawi. However, that gap might be narrowed and that there is no policy changes with respect to counter terrorism alliance according to the Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn carrying forward ethnic and secessionist politics and /or policies of ethnic federalism, secessesinsm and totaliarinism; the continued skirmishes to secede continues and the non-violent uprising to freedom by those parties with national agenda continues, unless a national convention is formed to ratify the constitution with regards to Article 46, 39 (1), and 8, with individual freedom as the center peice of the constitution and reverting to the original provinces with their boundries to resore Ethiopian Nationalism, territorial integrity and sovereignity as being the major concern of all faciton of the silent majority of Ethiopian tax payers rather loyality to their parties of ethnic agenda. That is wher the rubber meets the road, while there is no problem of maintaining an alliance with the United States as part of the coalition forces, I presume. It is not a question of narrowing the gap between the strategic and human rights, it is matter of seeing that a truly democratic government is established free of ethnic and secessionist politics and/or policies, worth receiving $800 of US tax payers fund.

The voices of the opresssed is being buried by international idealizing of Meles Zenawi! This silence is indicating Ethiopia loves TPLF and Meles rule. It is a warning, while Westerners like the author above and the recent article posted by Ethiomedia are fighting for Ethiopia more than we Ethiopians. We are afraid to even squeak. It is time Ethiopians hit the headlines! It is time to approach in emergency situation every friends of Ethiopians all over the world and we think somehow this will pass. It is obvious, we are being massaged with slow death and we are now believing this is better than the obvious massacare that took place in other parts of the world. We are waiting for that huge massacre then we act. Now is the time before it is too late. Even as we speak, TPLF has already started tribal war in Oromia region. Silence is not option. Some in order to avoid the discussion on Facebook, write about Ethiopia’s latest airplane next coming in order to cover up the fear. You have to face fear not avoid it other wise it will come to haunt us. I am not saying we should be impulsive but act accordingly to isolate TPLF by letting the world know these groups are dangerous. It is also possible the pro Eritrean groups in TPLF will take over and more human right abuse will take over.

    Aha,

You have said well. The reason the opposition groups are not functioning is because they are the same side of coins as TPLF very well said. The only difference is they are just advocating their own ethnicity just like TPLF. Therefore, the struggle is in fact among Liberation Fronts to hold power and has nothing to do with Ethiopia as a whole. Take for example why CUD (Kinijit) succeeded unlike other Opposition groups is because it campaigned based on Ethiopia and quickly the support was very successful and swift. Even today the so called opposition groups are holding Ethiopians as a hostage, ineffective, numb. They are the same as OLF who had this party with not ONE result. The opposition groups are today exactly that. Ethiopia is hungry for one charismatic leader who not afraid and will come out to say, I refuse your ethnic and religious slogan, Ethiopia weym mot. You will not survive your ethnic community or worship your religion if you don’t have a land to live on a land in the first place. He must say these things and rally every Ethiopians behind him. Because we are completely fragmented due to this ethnicity and religions thing that is why we are at mercy of outsiders and they enjoy this indeed because this is exactly what they want.

If any does not know about the POL POT of Cambodia you must know. The supporters of TPLF today which they know it are those from rural areas who benefited under their ethnic name and challenging a beneficial system of Ethiopia’s society that existed before for example: challenging the educated, students teachers, healt care workers, those with excellent talent. Pol pot was threaten by these professional responsible for advancing Cambodia forward, he was threatened by urbanites calling them as “elites” like TPLF is calling “neftegna” etc. he killed millions of his people and pulled Cambodia back to dark ages. Is there any more enemy than your own people who are twisted with such ideology as communism and neoliberalism? Ethiopia is in fact more backward today than she has everbeen. It is the buidlings and roads that is masquerading development. Scandinavians defined what development means, well being of society that builds trust, education. if you invest especially on those the country will go forward for sure.

So basically because you believe Ethiopia is Empire then it should be broken is that what you are saying? Ethiopia is empire compared to which country today please tell? Again I was refereing to religion based on what Hussain said above. All these empires have different ideologies where as the Ottomon agenda was to spread Islam all over and it succeeded doing that and Islam is also one of the fastest growing religon today. The need for oil, Oil money and greed and short sightedness is contributing to Islam spreading.

I am very much amazed by the way in which president Obama expressed the death ,works and legacy of Meles. How comes Meles/TPLF worked for the poor in reducing poverty if not the other way to create the rampant proliferation of abject poverty and the ensuing economic and social crisis. This part of the address of Obama regarding poverty reduction, which is such a blatant lie, by itself expresses his and West’s disregard for we Ethiopians. Meles policy of poverty reduction has been implemented not by reducing poverty itself but rather the other way round by reducing the number of poor through homelessness, malnutrition, disease, migration, dislocation and other heinous mechanisms. The only thing we can agree with the sentiment of Obama’s speech with regard to poverty reduction is if it is about the Tigrean minority ethnic groups who belong to Meles/TPLF domain and in this regard we agree all that Meles has tirelessly worked for his own ethnic domain. The other irony of Obama,s speech regarding poverty reduction by his servant Meles in Ethiopia is to cover up the last 21 years of pervasively applied West’s system of Global Capitalisms Neo-Liberal system that has impoverished 3rd world poor peoples and also the global mass. As I have been tirelessly commenting Meles/TPLF has been serving as a servant stooge client-regime to advance Global-Capitalism’s Neo-Liberal and Neo-colonialism imperialistic projects. So when Obama specifically addresses the issues of the poor peoples Ethiopia (and indeed that of 3rd world nations) he deeps inside pretty well knows that his West’s system of Global-Capitalism’s Neo-Liberal and Neo-colonialism imperialistic projects imposed over the global mass by USA/West is no more good no more acceptable no more functioning and no more sustainable in that it is at its terminal stage. If there is no Welfare-State then there is no more poverty reduction if not rather severe aggravation of abject poverty and it is well known that West’s system of Global-Capitalism’s Neo-Liberal and Neo-colonialism imperialistic projects imposed over the global mass by USA/West especially during the last 21 years, is against welfare-State virtues and workings. So the very irony deep inside when Obama talks about Meles’s achievements regarding poverty reduction is to indirectly protect his own system of West’s system of Global-Capitalism’s Neo-Liberal and Neo-colonialism imperialistic projects imposed over the global mass by USA/West especially during the last 21 years as has been implemented over we Ethiopians through USA/West’s stooge servant client-regime of Meles/TPLF that has created such an abject poverty among the majority Ethiopian society. Now Obama’s and USA/West/s great concern and worry is not as such the death of Meles as a mere person but rather to maintain the status-quo either through same Meles/TPLF existing system with very minor superficial reforms or through another prospective opposition groups installing them on same well established well entrenched system of Meles/TPLF. Dear all Ethiopians as long as the well established well entrenched system of Meles/TPLF security, military, the Neo-Liberal technocratic-bureaucracy/plutocracy system associated with the economy mainly serving (EFFORT/MIDROC),Ethnically driven politics, Media, academic, entertainment as well others are not dismantled and reformed to serve the majority mass then the same misery of Ethiopia Ethiopiawinet and Ethiopians shall continue as it is. What we are in very need is not a mere death of one person Meles or the mere change of TPLF or any other superficial change to maintain the status-quo. So what we are in very need is meaningful, vital viable systemic change. Dear all Ethiopians let’s not as such easily become so naïve and gullible to be lulled or appeased by the sort of Arab spring type superficial change or ‘revolution’ whose end-game is not yet clearly known whether it is to mainly serve the interest of the USA/West or that of the interest of those peoples in those Arab nations where it took place. So having such an amazing proliferation of Political parties around 70,the majority of which are very devoid of Intrinsic-virtues is such a legacy of Meles/TPLF. The funny, laughable and amazing thing is to the contrary such shameful and bizarre proliferation of having around 70 political parties is presented as a successful achievement of Meles/TPLF. So the very reason of such proliferation of having around 70 political parties is clearly the very result of having no intrinsic-virtues and having no clear and meaningful life-philosophy and political philosophy. The way we present and interpret the essence of democracy is even so dysfunctional in that it does not serve us eventually in such a constructive manner.በፈለከው ቦታና ሰዓት የፈለከውን የፖለቲካ ፓርቲ ተሰባስቦ እንደ እድርና survival collectively as well as individually. Any thing new and odd destructive lesson like the so called the ‘Abyssinian Empire’ that deviates form from this equilibrium balanced state of Ethiopia as a sovereign nation-state shall head for our destabilization weakness and eventual inevitable demise. If we call this equilibrium balanced state of Ethiopia as a sovereign nation-state as ‘Abyssinian Empire’ then what are we gong to name or call the heinously in the background lurking order of the day Global Governance of global capitalism of the Anglo-Saxon whose crux and epicenter is USA/UK?
So Does really Meles, who has worked for this order of the day system, reduce poverty In Ethiopia when Obama says so like that because of his death? Well When Obama says reduction of poverty among poor Ethiopian peoples then we better understand him it is undoubtedly meant for Meles/TPLF secluded domain of Tigrean peoples which we also agree with in that sentiment. Well that is why Malcolm-X once said that Capitalism is also racial in a way that helps its inherent inner workings of forming class structures and social fabrics compliant to its nature, that is its nature of system of the minority few. So Ethnicity is such an insidiously perpetrated reflection of Global Capitalism. And such system, inherently, is not able to reduce poverty for the majority mass if not aggravating it rather. So Obama has made such a big blatant lie when he talks and hails about Meles’s strive for poverty reduction with regard to the majority Ethiopian Peoples because the reality on the ground does not show like that.

    God Bless Ethiopia!!!

Why are you taking us back? The question is about maintaining unity in diversity, not breaking up a united country. That is outadated.

We need a true federal arrangement to achieve this. TPLF has failed miserably.

    Love,

The TPLF “federal system” has failed miserably because it was only a political gimmick. We should move ahead to a trrue federeal system that guarantees unity in diversity.

You comment is a step which will take us back by about 1000 years.
