Inducing TPLF to relinquish power PART – I By Robele Ababya

August 23rd, 2012 Print Print Email Email

“Where Law ends, Tyranny begins” is a quotation attributed to one of the most influential English philosophers, John Locke (1632 -1704). The interesting corollary: “Where Tyranny ends, the Law takes effect” should scare tyrants and embolden fighters for dignity and decency, which can thrive only in a compassionate democratic society under the supreme rule of law. I used the quotation by Locke in my article entitled “Beyond inevitable fall of Zenawi and Mubarak” dated 05 February 2011.

The following quotation by Abraham Lincoln – one of the Greatest Statesmen in the world – is remarkably valid:-

“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it.” I used this quotation in my article titled “Resolve epic Ethiopian issues now” dated 27 July 2012

Reaffirming the veracity of the two quotations above, I write this short piece – which is a follow up to my article entitled “Operation save Ethiopia” dated 23 July 2011.

Indeed! Ethiopia with divine intervention will belong to all of her citizens that choose to live in freedom, dignity, prosperity, and respect for basic human rights in a democratic society ruled by the a constitution of the people by the people for the people.

Recapitulation: Background to this short piece

The initially peaceful 1974 Ethiopian Revolution turned bloody with the idea of the misplaced class struggle imported by Marxist-Leninists that converged on Addis Ababa from the Diaspora; they thought that communist ideology would be panacea for all the political, economical and social problems perpetrated by the then largely feudal order that, under the divine right of kings claimed by the 235th Emperor of Ethiopia, governed the lives of the pious multi-cultural society influenced by intertwined Judo-Christian and Islamic values for centuries.

The leftists engaged in a fierce fight for grabbing state-power – one group running to the USSR and the other to Communist China for support. The USA responded to Mengistu’s harsh criticism in public and reduced its Embassy strength in Addis Ababa.

Interestingly, the defunct USSR welcomed the peaceful bloodless change and advised that all democratic forces supporting it should be included in a broad-based government that would transform the Ethiopian feudal society. The Derg called the USSR revisionist. Communist China did not give much material support to the radical Maoists behind the Derg for tactical reasons.

The bloodshed and carnage took place among the Marxist-Leninists, better still between Stalinist-Maoists, locked in competition to show supremacy in ideological purity and to that end using children of poor peasants and workers as their foot soldiers. Such gruesome and humiliating act must no repeat in Ethiopia ever again.

The mirror in which I see the legacy of tyrant Zenawi

The tyrant finally died leaving us with the legacy of his heinous crimes including genocide, victims of torture, incarceration of peaceful protesters en masse; extra judiciary execution of peaceful protesters, the wailing of mothers, the agony of bereaved families, toiling peasants in serfdom, interethnic hatred, daylight robbery of votes, pervasive corrupt practices, demised free media, government monopoly of all pillars of democracy, blocked freedom of expression, poor educational standard, forbidden academic freedom in tertiary institutions, abject poverty, rampant unemployment embarrassing lies, rampant breach of the constitution, regional instability et al.

All in all it was a tragedy that befell Ethiopia bringing her to the precipice of catastrophe that will require divine guidance, visionary leadership and hard work in a democratic environment.

In my article titled “Countdown to dethroning Zenawi” dated 29 January 2011 I wrote:
Quote An estimated 2 -3 million Ethiopians inundated the streets and public squares in support of the opposition forces – notably Coalition for Unity and Democracy (Kinijit) and Unity of Ethiopian Democratic Forces – at the mammoth peaceful demonstration on 08 May 2005, that is one week before the election of 15 May 2005 that ended in crushing defeat for the ruling TPLF Party. There is no reason that the same kind of sea of humanity should not turnout again to demand the dethronement of Meles Zenawi. The time is propitious to reclaim our human dignity; this must be done primarily by us by paying all the necessary sacrifices to achieve our sacred goal of liberating our beloved country, Ethiopia, in unison while respecting our cultural diversity and categorically rejecting division along ethnic lines that has so far proved a potent weapon of choice of the invader. Unquote

The Almighty God has done the dethroning and the rest of the evil legacies left behind by tyrant Zenawi’s permanent departure are up to us the victims of his atrocities to rectify. There are Herculean tasks in waiting to be carried out in earnest!

Lost opportunity

The 20th century passed on a phenomenal quantum leap in science, technology and communications to the 21st century. Both despots Mengistu Hailemariam and Meles Zenawi failed to make use of the benefits of this development because they were deeply suspicious of intellectuals and fearful of the educated class. The former demoralized the educated class by killing, marginalizing, insulting them; the latter did even more by sending them into exile not long after entry to Addis Ababa to capture power with the support of the USA.

The tyrant Zenawi lost valuable time in committing unforgivable crime of blocking free flow of information and current knowledge to the Ethiopian; promulgating draconian laws to prevent freedom of expression in all its forms.

Foreign influence on Ethiopian affairs
Starting with the Imperial regime up to the present domestic and foreign policy has been influenced by western powers save for the 17 years of the era of the Derg where the Communist Block under the overall control of the defunct USSR had the lions share followed by Cuba and North Korea in shaping such policy.
Unfortunately, in security matters and supply of military hardware and personnel training, Ethiopia was totally dependent on the two superpowers of the cold war era. This was more so in the face of serious threats then coming from reactionary despotic leaders in the oil-rich Arab world.

In spite of incalculable price paid in terms of human lives and scarce resources for setting up her defense institution and acquisition of military weapons, Ethiopia is now a landlocked country with an army and security forces completely dominated and controlled by loyal clique of generals and colonels originating from a minority ethnic group holding almost all positions at the command and policy making staff levels. This must be reversed as a matter of top priority!

The threats from the Arab world are fortunately now waning thanks to the Arab Spring that has disgracefully swept away those despotic leaders from power. So, this is a momentous time for Ethiopia to formulate its own policy for the first time since the death of Menilik II. The only barrier to formulating an independent foreign policy at this moment is our lack of unity!

How to force the TPLF top echelon to relinquish power

The initial phase of popular revolution will do the following:-

1.People will flock to public squares in mammoth numbers in every city in Ethiopia

2.Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and declare unfettered freedom of expression consistent with the UN Declaration on Human Rights

3.Oppositions forces, civic leaders and religious organizations shall set up their stalls at the city squares throughout Ethiopia where they will introduce their political programs or provide their specific inputs to democratic change as well as d engage with stakeholders at consultation meetings focused on the way forward based on agreed timeline

4.Stakeholders gathered in Addis Ababa will setup a coordinating committee that will contact similar committees in other cities and receive resolutions of the demonstrators on key issues; consolidate resolutions received and disseminate to stakeholders

5.People will agree to form a transitional government

6.People will demand resignation of the top echelon of the EPRDF Party including Politbureau and Central Committee members handing power to the transitional government for a period of one

7.The first and foremost undertaking would be securing the boundaries of motherland, Ethiopia. So the current national defense and security structures must be kept intact; rank and file service men and women as well as officers with the rank of up to lieutenant colonel will be retained; the remaining high ranking officers will be suspended pending fair investigation as to why they did not side with the people

Here below are some other key indispensable tasks:-

1.Establishment of National Peace and Reconciliation Commission
2.Establishment of an all-inclusive Transitional Government
3.Formulating basic principles and identifying inviolable national values to be enshrined in the new constitution
4.Drafting of a new constitution of the people by the people for the people
5.Forming of a democratic government
6.Resolving the long standing burning issue of “Land to the Tiller” as private property
7.Formulating comprehensive domestic policy
8.Formulating the first ever independent foreign policy

More on securing Ethiopian borders

Securing the borders with Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan require special attention. There is no question that the valiant people of Tigray together with regular ground and Air Force units there, will repulse any Eritrean threat; the Ethiopian defense forces unit deployed in Somalia should be withdrawn to secure our border demolishing the Al Shaba on its way back; the defense of the border with the Sudan should be carried out with the collaboration of regular forces and various anti-TPLF dissidents operating in the area; fortunately the border with Kenya has been demarcated and both countries have a common enemy, the Al Shabab, which they should keep fighting jointly.

There is no sense in engaging in internecine civil strife and boast as a national hero and building monuments to commemorate the victims of the winning side. It would therefore be right to demand the TPLF leaders at the top echelon to resign from their posts in order to stop the vicious cycle of grabbing power by the barrel of the gun. The immoral flow of fund from some Western powers is bound to end in which case the TPLF regime shall be no more.

Release all political prisoners including Andualem Aragie, Eskinder Nega et al

Robele: there is no threat to Ethiopia or Ethiopians be it from Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Kenya, or in that case any Africans. Ethiopia’s threat mainly comes from the tplf maffia family members and their handlers from the west. Did you forget already or not Susan Rice makes a living representing the the tplf maffia family members at the UN, did you forget DLP makes a living representing the maffia family members in DC, did you forget al-mouares is stripping Ethiopias gold and its beautiful citizens, and did forget……….

TPLF/EPRDF will not evaporate to thin air. It is a power the oppositions have to deal with. It is unrealistic to wish for Transitional Government or things of that nature. There are several ways to bring changes to the political process without endangering the integrity of Ethiopia or re-enforcing ethnic politics which TPLF used as divide and rule tacitic to protect its power.

I like with the points made here. But, I am not sure if we all understand the true practice of democracy. Democracy comes with responsibility and time and again, I have seen it being abused by different faction in Ethiopia including religious organizations. After living abroad and beating the democracy drum, I have come to a conclusion what Ethiopia needs is someone strong with vision and passion to lead without being hindered by so called opponents. there is a saying goes like this. Either you work or get out of the way for others to work. I whole heartily support this position. Anti this and that are weakness and down right old and dirty politics that has expires long ago and has no place these days. If one is truly passionate and want to serve Ethiopia, the avenue is wide open. There are many ways we can help people without always seeking political power or becoming the next prime minister.

After listening to to the commentaries by prodemocracy movements and OLF dignitaries on ESAT following the death of the Prime Minister over what the newly configured committee of four TPLF Politbuerro and three major teletafi party leaders behind the newly Acting Prime Minister Haile Mariam Desalegn, your proposal is bold and tangible to achieve the ends stipulated in #5, #6 and #7, although it may not be complete without putting into consideration of the teletafi (ethnic federalist) parties and loyalist opposition (ethnic federalist) parties, which formed OPDF/EFDF/fdre, with Tigrai-Harena, with ethnic agenda and UDJP for democracy, human right and justice, together constituting a mirror image of TPLF/eprdf looking from outside now pleading on the newly formed TPLF/eprdf to improve on human right and democracy, where human rights violetions is common denominator of all factions and parties and democracy, which is a rule by the people and for the people and of the people does not come about from the constitution based on ethnic feralism, secessionism and totaliarinism as the root causes to individual freedom, liberty and equality to exceed ethnic and secessionist rights, hindering free market capitalism and/or mixed economic model and democracy to the silent majority of Ethiopians, along with private ownership of land to the silent majority of Ethiopians, Ethiopian Nationalism, Ethiopian national intersts and sovereignity of Ethiopia. However, you end point in #5 fails to spell out individual freedom, liberty and equality to suprecede ethnic and secessionist rights, the ratification of the constitution with respect to Article 46, 39(1), 8 (the sovereignity of Ethiopia) and respect press freedom and Universal Declaration of Human Rightscommentaries. Neither the commentaries in EASAT nor your proposal failed to center on the the flaws of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism as prerequistes, and party alignments along ethnic agenda, instead of national agenda and focusing on Ethiopiawinet before one ethnicity, and putting Ethiopia’s national interest ahead of self interst, individual freedom, liberty and equality to have precedence over ethnic and secessionist rights and having a clear cut cut goals around the national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereinigty of Ethiopia as prequisites and goals with a set of strategies as meand to the ends in #5, 6 and 7 a reality to have a democratic government that rule by the consent of the governed.

Thanks to ESAT and thanks to you for bringinging things in the open for us to relfect on what is in it for the silent majority of Ethiopians subject to abject poverty inspite 8-11% GDP, living on food aid without the TPLF eprdf’s ability to mitigate drought and famine through producing food under irrigated farming and storage with $800 million dolrs in grats it receives fro USA alone.

What the Diaspora elits of the prodemocracy movements the legacy of the Pime Minister Meles Zenawi with regard to internal politics and/or policiies are that of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism built into the constitution and focing the formation of parties along ethnic agenda rather than national agenda for economic and political freedom and undermining those parties aligned along the national agenda, whose intentions and actions are interpreted as the subverting the constutional order as one of the charges for CUD leadrs, now most of which are in the prodemocracy movements, seeking “no change but durable democracy” and now pleading with the newly constituted TPLF and three major teletafi (ethnic federalist) parties to bring about democracy in a powersharing arrangements with those parties with ethnic agenda.

You should have also looked int the commentaries of Sibhat Nega on his contention on the the Indepence of Eritrea and now on the subverting the constitutional order of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism to be be met with force, a declation of war, I paraphrase.

This brings about the focus on the flaws on the constitution as the major sticking point, not modifying the behavior of the TPLF/eprdf regime with respect to democracy and human right violations, which still leaves ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism, and the exploitations, economic, political strangle hold of the countries resources by TPLF, TPLF affiated enterprises and foreign corporations intact. Human rights and democracy are the products of the non-urising to freedom of individuals, which create a constitution based on individal freedom, liberty and equality as the centerpiece of the constituion, not the other around, using the USA constituion as a model to emulate to have a constituitonal democracy, not as pariamentary democracy of UK with Constitutional Monarchy, when we had lost that opportunity with HIM Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime, to say the least the country is divided into seven of nine and/or 80 ethnic groups in the form of ethnic federalism of self rule and separate developments instead of retaining the boundries of the original 14 provinces with assorted ethnic groups.

So, I say to both the commentaries on ESAT and the author of this article
neither pandering to the newly formed committee of TPLF/eprdf, nor falling short on tackling the flaws of the constitution incorporating ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism is the way to go to bring about individual freedom, liberty and equality to suprcede ethnic and secessionist rights to form a govenment with democratic and independent branches of government, wherby human right violations dicipate and democracy prvails, press freedom and peaceful demosntrations, fair trials and fair and and free elections are by products of a truly dimocratic government that rule by the cosent of the govenrd.

I want my leaders for Ethiopia to come from the people and especially from those that own businesses, had experience of honest governing with verifiable records. I hope our leaders should NOT come from so called intellectuals such as university professors. I have no respect for 80 to 90% of them, because they are “yemihuran iwiran.” I rather be governed by a hard working business owner in Mercato, or a farmer that already knows the basic needs of the people. I want a government that fears its citizens, serves the people, not dictate them. I want free market economy to flourish. I hope NOT those hardliners, divisive socialist thieves and liberal liars come to power. Meles Zenawi a socialist liberal liar, gone by Devine intervention. We have now a chance to build Ethiopia peacefully with patience and mutual respect to all involved. You are in fact a coward not a hero if you do not follow peaceful means to freedom. Peaceful means for peace, justice and freedom in Ethiopia!!!

ጉረግኖች! You toched upon the core of the internal politics and/or policies based on ethnic agenda vs the national agenda which sets up the polical models as TPLF/eprdf, OPDF/EFDF/fdre, a conglomerate of the loyalist opposition parties, including Tigrai-Harena and UDJP with the subset of the national agenda for democracy and justice, both of which have at its basis platform, which puts them together with the TPLF/eprdf as the negative forces of disintegration, because of their implict support the constitution of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism built into it and their party formation along ethnic agenda rather than national agenda. Since the teletafi parties, with TPLF Politbueurro being the architect of the constitution of ethnic politics and/or policies built into the constitution and dividing the land mass into ethnic killils/governments of self-rule, rather than maintaining the original boundries, it has created a divide and rule policy, much like the previous appartheid regime, and by incorporating secessionism in the constitution, it has created a fake boundries as a prlude to session and future boundry conflicts. Add to that it has incorporated totaliarinism of the Dergue era, thus denying the silent majority ownership of property as one of the means of production in a capitalistic society and yet supports TPLF,TPLF affilated enterprises (EFFORT) and foreign corporations to engage in exploitations, political and economic strangle hold ofthe countries resources to the detriment of the natural resources and eviction of the native inhabitants. OPDF/EFDF/fdre as well the libration fronts with their ethnic agenda with their implict support of the constitution have put themselves between a rock and hard place to abandon their ethnic agenda with the national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignity of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to freedom, liberty and eqality to supecede thinc and secessionist rights, wherby if the individual rights are respected the group rights follow through. Add to that the support of constition and the TPLF/eprdf regime by the security, military and federal poice forces, the only operating system they have to run the silent majority of Ethiopians, thus tilting the balance between the thpostive forces of integration with the national agenda and those of the negative forces of disintegration with ethnic agenda, which sebhat Nega defends raises war against those trying to subvert the constituional order of ex-libreation fronts.

Yes you are right “TPLF/EPRDF does not evaporate to thin air”, but the struggle between these two dimertical opposed political and economic forces is to tip the balance towards the postive forces of integration by those parties with ethnic agenda coalscing to the national agenda with aopted strategies and establishing a constitution based on individual freedom, and parties along the national agenda, where parties copete for the ability to advance Ethiopia in the 21st century.

I am going to tell you the following again. You better listen to me. It will save you time and unnecessary harm you may end up inflicting on yourself just like you did in 2005. You must read the following accurate prediction and take it to your heart.

I am getting tired of reminding you all what I said a million times before. Do you think we sacrificed more than 60,000 of brave sons and daughters during our struggle to liberate you from the blood thirst Mengistu regime for nothing? When we were struggling and dying, you were chowing down Bib Mac’s and having good times at your speakeasies. And now you are cursing at a world’s most renowned leader who is resting in peace after transforming a backward rural nation into one of the fastest growing economies in the world. I am not saying that there were no mistakes made during the last 21 years but those missteps were done in the best of intentions by zealous officials at lower level echelons of the government. But they were never erred by our Most Benevolent Leader Meles. Not one mistake he made in his lifetime. Period!!! Your problem is the bigotry you harbor on my peaceful people of Tigray. Why don’t you admit it and get done with it. I know you hate me the time I tell you my name is Tekle and from Adigrat. Bigotry will never get you anywhere but will end up backfiring at you. The world hates bigotry and will avoid you forever and ever therefore will have nothing to do with you. That means total isolation for you. That is a cancer that will eat you up at the heart of your existence. So grow up!!!! The peoples of Ethiopia know what is best for them and they have accepted peacefully our offer to lead them out of their wretched lives. And what an excellent job we have done so far. You just listen to our leader President Obama’s eulogy for our Benevolent Leader Meles. Just read the eulogies by the leaders of UK, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, China, Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Sudan, Ghana, Malaysia, and Singapore. They all mourned sincerely the passing away of Our Most Sacred Leader Meles. And we will continue to do the best job in our leadership capacity for the next 1,000 years. Don’t forget the formula I gave you before. For each 17 years of struggle we conducted in the 70′s and 80′s we lead for 25 years each. That is 17 X 25 = 425 years. Those will double for the magnificent job we have done since 1991. That is 425 X 2 =850 years and that is rounded up to 1,000 years. Enough said!!!!!
