Thousands march for rights in rare Ethiopia protest

June 2nd, 2013 Print Print Email Email

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – About 10,000 Ethiopians staged an anti-government procession on Sunday in the first large-scale protest since a disputed 2005 election ended in street violence that killed 200 people.

The demonstrators marched through Addis Ababa’s northern Arat Kilo and Piazza districts before gathering at Churchill Avenue in front of a looming obelisk with a giant red star perched on top, a relic of Ethiopia’s violent Communist past.

Some carried banners reading “Justice! Justice! Justice!” and some bore pictures of imprisoned opposition figures. Others chanted, “We call for respect of the constitution”.

A few police officers watched the demonstration, for which the authorities had granted permission.

“We have repeatedly asked the government to release political leaders, journalists and those who asked the government not to intervene in religious affairs,” said Yilekal Getachew, chairman of the Semayawi (Blue) Party which organized the protests.

He said the demonstrators also wanted action to tackle unemployment, inflation and corruption.

“If these questions are not resolved and no progress is made in the next three months, we will organize more protests. It is the beginning of our struggle,” he told Reuters.

Government officials were not immediately available for comment.

ANTI-TERRORISM LAW

Ethiopian opposition parties routinely accuse the government of harassment and say their candidates are often intimidated in polls. The 547-seat legislature has only one opposition member.

Though its economy is one of the fastest-growing in Africa, Ethiopia is often criticized by human rights watchdogs for clamping down on opposition and the media on national security grounds, a charge the government denies.

Critics point to a 2009 anti-terrorism law that makes anyone caught publishing information that could induce readers into acts of terrorism liable to jail terms of 10 to 20 years.

Last year, an Ethiopian court handed sentences of eight years to life to 20 journalists, opposition figures and others for conspiring with rebels to topple the government.

More than 10 journalists have been charged under the anti-terrorism law, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, which says Ethiopia has the highest number of exiled journalists in the world.

Muslims, who form about a third of Ethiopia’s mostly Christian population, staged mosque sit-ins in 2012, accusing the government of meddling in religious affairs and jailing their leaders.

Ethiopia, long seen by the West as a bulwark against radical Islamists in neighboring Somalia, denies interfering, but says it fears militant Islam is taking root in the country.

There you go!!! This is a good one. Let’s see what these goons who descended from some stinking joint called Dedebit are going to do about it. If these Woyane hoodlums have any inner conviction that they are cut to rule over the people in any way they want, they must think about that twice. They better think about what happened to the heirs of the Chiang Kai-Shek dynasty, the brutal generalissimos of Latin America, Portugal, Spain, Marcos and his ‘New Society’ and many godless communist regimes of our lifetime. The last ones did even have human-race-wiping nuclear arsenal at their arsenal and personal disposal. In the 1940′s they have fought Hitler and his Nazis to do his death. But in the closing decades of the 20th century they have no way of realizing that they have become irrelevant and despotic even they there were ample warning signs from the peoples they were trampling on. Those goons who have huddled around EPRDF better start packing and packing now. I don’t mean to fly to the suburbs of DC or Baltimore but directly to the slammer. And this should be done peacefully and in orderly fashion.
In the meantime, I have a bone or two to pick with some of you in our own Diaspora. I am flabbergasted and utterly stunned to see those among our own Diaspora who are supporting Egypt which is blindly objecting any move by Ethiopia to utilize its God given property prudently. Like I said before this dam will remain to be the property of the entire people when completed. Such unwisely chosen point of opposition will not help the cause of any opposition. It is rather a laughable grand standing. Even Morsi himself will be scratching his head in astonishment wondering if you are in your right state of mind.

    A paradigm shift.
The dreary gloomy wintry season has gone. Nature is in no hibernating mood any longer. The ice is thawing, the river flowing and there is no silence anymore as the birds sing amidst the returning green shoots. A lovely sunshine has broken forth under the clear BLUE Ethiopian skies.
    Spring is here at last!
This certainly is an important development in our peoples struggle for freedom and justice.
When a highly abused and traumatized individual feels totally powerless and helpless against a seemingly omnipotent abuser she keeps silent in shame and dread. While instead hating the abuse and demythologizing the power of the abuser, the traumatized person internalizes these through some form self hatred and sense of worthlessness.
Externally, this may be expressed as loyalty and love for the abuser. This is what individual psychology tells us and this however is not confined to the individual.
We have seen a similarly bizarre phenomenon with a group of people during the death of the late tyrant, Mêlées Zenawi.
Among them were people who were maltreated by his abusive rule including mothers who, among other kinds of traumas, did lose their sons and relations to his killing squads.
Yet, as we saw then, many were mourning his death with great public display of greif.Strange as it sounded at the time, these powerless victims of his tyranny were crying for Meles, their seemingly omnipotent and ‘beloved’ oppressor.
By contrast, when the abused speaks out against her abuse, that person is no longer mystifying her abuser and in the prison of her past. She is in the saddle while her hands are holding the reigns her destiny. She is in charge. She has her sight on her achievable freedom.
In today’s demonstration, our people have spoken loud and clear. They have thus clearly expressed their desire for the long abuse to end. They want justice and freedom. They have demythologized the evil power of that rule by saying ‘DONT’T EVER TRY TO DEVIDE US.WE ARE ONE.RELIGION CAN NOT DEVIDE US,ETHNICITY CAN NOT DEVIDE IS. They have therefore demonstrated that all oppressors are paper tigers.
So what next? What would be the reaction of our oppressive rulers? What would be the counsel given to it by expat advisers?
Will the regime allow the rule of law to prevail as demanded by the demonstrators? Will they meet the demands of the demonstrators and release all prisoners of conscience? Will they answer the simple plea of our Muslim compatriots and their Christian counterparts? Will they make those corrupt officials among themselves face the music? Will they stop the evictions and dislocations of our people from their native lands following of the wholesale land grab? Will they stop ruling our people through fear and terror?
These are unlikely to happen. This tyranny is set in its rigid ways. We can, judging by our past experiences, expect that the regime might soon organize a counter demonstration through its usual blandishment and coercion again pretending that it is legitimate and democratic.
That,in the face of an ever gathering and more assertive power of the people would not save the day.

Here is a time calls that for earnest reform.

This time is the begining of the end of tyranny!!

More than 220,000 heroic Ethiopians took part in the demonstration for freedom – not 10,000 as the writer put it.

Bravo Blue Party and the demonstrators for making your fellow citizens in the Diaspora proud

Is this some kind of farce from the dogeared play book written by the late Meles Zenawi or the CIA operative, the late Paul Henzy?I am just asking here the timing shortly after the AU thugs have left to their respective home lands? How is this mamooth demonstration came to pass peacefully knowing the all-too-familiar twisted and vulgar mind of TPLF? Is this an event intended to bambozzle and befuddle the world the democratic nature of Woyane that allow this kind melo drama? Sorry, I am not buying this.Nor the Egyptian threat to rally around the Non-Tigryans to fight for their economic and political power. It is not the Arabs who ejected the indigenous people from their land. It is TPLF the Ethiopa’s eternal enemy since time immemorial. TPLF that capitulated the soveringity of the country to Eritrea and imperialist counties. What is there for me and my compatriots in this external threat? I am a non-Tigryian,Third class citizen in my own country.Nile dam! Who is the benficanrifor this project?Azeb Mesfin and Woyane. It was alright in the past for TPLF to get help from Arab countires while fighting for Republic of independant Tigray. Now it is brazenly immoral for non-Tigryans to get help from Egypt to fight for my country. What is the philiophical background for this inverted logic?. I need an adquate explanation from TPLF and their gushing adeherants why I should fight for the political life of TPLF? And what is at stake for non-Tigryans?

    @ Oda Tulu,

Where do you get that number, 220K, from? Your sources must be more reliable than Reuters? Bro, it doesn’t matter the name of the color – a backward is a backward by any name. Those are the same people who refused to participate in a democratic election knowing doing so will entail losing big time. Now they are protesting against a government they refused to challenge in the ballot? What make them think they can win this way? Is that maybe this has to do with some help and encourgment of Egypit? Just a thought for your poor soul.

I’ve no idea what this Semayawi party is all about, but big thumbs up for these brave Ethiopians! However, I wish all the opposition parties come together and form one party and get rid of these murderers, soulless, merciless mafia group that are selling and looting the country and committing genocide. It’s crucial for Ethiopians to unite and form one political party, instead of a single Blue, Black, Red, White, or Yellow party. The biggest threat to TPLF is the Unity of all ethnic Ethiopians. Unite for the sake of suffering Ethiopians and for your motherland!

Under the living skies of our motherland, Ethiopia has never been short of producing fine men and women. Yes, indeed; the vibrant, forward thinker, and an intelligent son of Ethiopia, Yelikal our (yegnakal) Getnet lead his people and party to a shared victory on Sunday, May the 25th, 2013. A reward from Ethiopia to you, all Ethiopians.

All Ethiopian, keep the faith keep the fight.

In 1991, the robbers came into Ethiopia with a lot of guns and bullets to loot and murder Ethiopians. They then immediately moved into villages, towns, cities, and neighbourhoods and broke into homes and vandalized the lives of families.

Dead or alive, Meles Zenawi, the dead robber shall definitely stand trial and face the justice.

On Sunday, May the 25th 2013, to be precise, the dead robber felt the heat in his dark grave. Dead for a year, the robber departed to his grave with sins and crimes and three billion stolen dollar. Born and raised in a hate manufacturing house, the dead robber began his career as a bank robber.

A fugitive for years, one fateful day death cornered the robber against the sins that he made and the crimes he committed while living in Ethiopia. Desperate woman, now a widow, the wife of the dead robber lied to the world. She said, quote Meles lived and died poor.

Deported farmers and families were packed in trucks. People recall seeing bodies lying on a dirt road and children’s body parts scattering all over places. We bear the huge cost the robbers incurred on us, but the robbers shall pay the ultimate price.

    Victory to all Ethiopians!

    Death to the robbers!

In his later Discourse on Political Economy, Rousseau offered a portrait of social inequality that speaks as powerfully to an audience on the eve of the twenty-first century as it did to readers in the mid-eighteenth century.
“Are not all the advantages of society for the powerful and rich?” he asked. “Are not all lucrative positions filled by them alone? Are not all privileges and exemptions reserved for them? And is not public authority completely in their favor? When a man of high standing robs his creditors or cheats in other ways, is he not always certain of impunity? Are not the beatings he administers and the acts of violence he commits, even the murders and assassinations he is guilty of, hushed up and no longer even mentioned after months? If this same man is robbed, the entire police force is immediately on the move, and woe to the innocent persons he suspects…. How different is the picture of the poor man! The more humanity owes him, the more society refuses him. All doors are closed to him, even when he has the right to open them; and if sometimes he obtains justice, it is with greater difficulty than another would have in obtaining a pardon.
“Another less important consideration is that the losses of poor men are much less easy to offset that those of the rich, and that the difficulty of acquiring wealth always increases in proportion to need. Nothing is created from nothing; that is true in business as in physics; money is the seed of money, and the first ten francs are sometimes more difficult to earn than the second million. But there is still more. Everything that the poor man spends is forever lost to him, and remains in or returns to the hands of the rich….”

Yes the enemy has settled in Ethiopia and is still bleeding our country and people. We, Ethiopians have spotted the enemy that put our country in greater danger, building walls around the life of our children to a life imprisonment.

First thing first; Ethiopians must get rid of woyanai- Hiwahat from our country that they began attacking years ago and finally invaded 22 years ago and still are refusing to leave and wait patiently to face justice for the crimes that they had been committing on a daily basis.

Injustice! Injustice! Today, everything and anything that is available below and above the lands in Ethiopia is owned, controlled, and run by woyanai-Hiwhat criminals, leaving little or nothing for current and future generation to survive and strive for life.

The life of our children has been grabbed and squeezed to death on account of the enemy that you know committing atrocities and intensive criminal activities. Ethiopians must first get rid of the enemy within, then whichever the enemy is on the line will for sure be dealt with accordingly.

Ethiopians don’t trust both woyanai-Hiwhat rulers and the Egyptian rulers with our country. They made a deal that hurts Ethiopia, and later something went wrong and now are in a fighting readiness. We will protect our country while we fight both enemies tooth and nail; We must first begin to clean the stubborn dirt that spoilt the life of our children and the wellbeing of our country, housekeeping. Zenawi is dead for nearly a year; yes, he is lonesome in his dark grave; he then be a dead fool to even think of that he is exempted from standing trial and face justice. Well, dead or alive, zenawi will definitely stand before millions of Ethiopians face the justice.
