Running the Political Gauntlet: The Blue Party and the Diaspora By Tecola W. Hagos

I. Introduction

As a hyperactive child who had foolishly tried at one point to outrun his own shadow, I was taught a parable in an attempt to enlighten me about the facts of life, specifically about patience, fortitude, and perseverance. The story I was told was about a man who had lost his eyesight in both eyes when he was about seven years old due to smallpox, and had lived all of his life in total darkness. One day a person of great medical skills visited him and told him that he will be cured of his blindness and his sight will be restored the next morning. The blind man retorted back quite strongly protesting how he would be able to live through that night without his sight. The moral lesson in this story is a direct one. We Diaspora Ethiopians have lost the art of patience, fortitude, and perseverance. We seem to think that social changes must occur immediately. We do have real psychological problems.

In my last two articles, I was aiming to get us talking and listening rather than continue shouting slogans at or past each other. Ethiopian political reality is uniquely Ethiopian, and I doubt that any non-Ethiopian could have deep understanding of our political and economic situation. At this point in our history, there is a shift in our political paradigm and an expansion of our economic frame of reference. In the past several decades, it seems to me that our national political agenda has been set by individuals (which includes Diaspora political leaders) who seem to favor extending controversy and disharmony indefinitely among Ethiopians trying to erect a kind of a political Jacob’s Ladder that one can climb only in dreams. Fantasy is fine for children, but for adults the mark of great statesmanship is the ability to recognize political opportunities in such events that signal shifts in the power base. Here is where I challenged in my two previous articles Diaspora politicians to take note of the changed circumstance in the political power structure of the EPRDF, and the fact that Meles Zenawi is dead, and that we have a new Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn.

The public demonstration staged by the Blue Party on June 2, 2013 is a watershed event, the first of its kind since the mass chaotic and destructive demonstration of 2005 where government security forces killed about two hundred demonstrators. There were conflicting accounts of events, including eyewitness accounts, leading to that great loss of life as reported by the Commission established by the Ethiopian Government; however, the Commission’s report was further overshadowed by some of the Members of the Commission whose public dissension eventually put the blame on the Ethiopian Government use of excessive force. There were lessons to be learned from such incidents that I hope Ethiopians have learned since. Considering the peaceful conclusion of the Blue Party sponsored demonstration, it seems both the Ethiopian Government officials and the demonstration organizers and the participants have learned about their respective roles quite well. One must decide one’s priorities even in service of one’s country. No matter how long and how deep I look into the hierarchy of rights, I always end up strongly on the side of protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia overriding any of the individual or group political rights.

II. The Blue Party: Baby-Steps
The Blue Party’s demonstration in Addis Ababa on June 2, 2013 is a clear indicator of the changing political environment of the new Ethiopian Administration of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. This is the type of “baby-steps” I wrote about in my earlier articles. The emphasis on individual rights and political rights of Ethiopians is of primary importance next only to national survival right when threatened with immediate and real danger, and it is precisely in that order of importance that we have witnessed steps being taken by the new administration starting with the reinstating process of Amharas back to their settlements in Benshangul Kilil after they were forcefully removed by local authorities, a clear reversal of the obnoxious anti-democratic practice of the earlier administration.

The follow-up comment by the Government’s spokesperson, State Minister of Communications, Shimelis Kemal, on the Blue Party sponsored demonstration marred to some extent that singular achievement of the Government’s change of policy on permitting demonstrations. Shimelis does not seem to care about the distinction between “content” and “venue” when it comes to regulating public demonstrations. In the alternative, a well versed constitutional law expert should take the lead in showing to the Ethiopian public the distinction between common criminal activities from religious beliefs and the duty of the Ethiopian Government to restrain individual rights in the interest of society and the protection from harm of all other individuals. There are no absolute rights as such that would allow an individual or a group based on his/her beliefs or based on the individual freedoms to harm others, to insult or degrade others, or to enslave anyone, or to exploit without due compensation anyone et cetera. The role of a responsible government is to safeguard the rights of all citizens and to protect individuals from being harmed by others.

I hope the Blue Party leadership will not make the same type of mistake of past opposition political organizations; it is important that they be keenly aware that public demonstrations do not readily translate into taking over political power from an existing government. The 2005 political opportunity was lost due to such miscalculations, for the political leaders challenging the EPRDF should have taken their seats in Parliament and other local administrations, such as Addis Ababa’s Mayoral position, and worked their way through peaceful political influence building their power base. I have no illusion that political organizations are angelic; instead, they will fight tooth and nail to stay in power. That is no brainer, for it is a truism everywhere in all political national structures in the world. The Ethiopian Diaspora is most vocal advocating the overthrow of the EPRDF controlled Ethiopian Government. My dissention is very clear here. There is a system in place no matter how lopsided it is in favoring a particular group. It is far better than a government without legal framework and at the mercy of the whims and caprices of an individual dictator. I do not believe constant agitation and anti-government demonstrations are the best use of our productive energy. Our energy should be constructively used rather than be expended recklessly for almost nothing.

The huge mass demonstration of the supporters of the Blue Party is a great opportunity for the party to develop and anchor properly its political reach and the depth of its membership. The leaders of the Party must not interpret this huge public endorsement as a power base in order to challenge right away the existing Ethiopian Government for power, instead they ought to use this opportunity to organize and expand their party membership nation-wide and get elected in the next election for national and local seats in Parliament. In the mean time in order to attend serious and urgent national issues that we already have and those that may develop in the future, the Blue Party leaders need to establish non-profit organizations right there in Ethiopia to promote social programs in the areas of health, education, employment services et cetera. One ought to learn by looking at the same type of programs organized by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Serving the people of Ethiopia in need would earn the Blue Party great respect and trust, as well as supporters with commitment.

By contrast, any contact in terms of unity with Jihadist Muslims, or fanatical Christians, or any Diaspora based political organization is a kiss of death for the Blue Party. The Blue Party President Yenekal Getinet is reported to have said that “the Blue Party represents the desire for change among the 70 percent of Ethiopians under the age of 35, who he said want to break away from the Marxist ideas that have dominated the country’s political thinking for more than a generation.” Such understanding is a good solid foundation to formulate further real social programs. However, the President is also reported to have stated that in a three-month time if the demands of the Blue Party are not met by the Ethiopian Government, he will mount other demonstrations. This form of ultimatum giving posturing is taken from old worn out practices. There are several other ways of achieving the goals set by the Blue Party in less confrontational manner than going loggerhead with the Ethiopian Government leaders. It will be a mistake for the Blue Party to focus its energy, without proper organization and functional social programs, on power struggle with the EPRDF and the leaders in power.

There is great virtue in working from within, negotiating and compromising on some ideas or goals. All great Western democracies are built on constant negotiations and compromises reached on the idea that if one loses political influence at one point in time that it is not the end of the world, but there are future possibilities to renegotiate and to compromise on mutually beneficial goals. Ethiopian Diaspora politicians in the main are a tragic lot, for they have carried with them the old system of school-days use of “demand and boycott of classes” that they used two scores years ago from Emperor Haile Selassie’s Era. The problem then as it is now is a total misunderstanding of the fundamental life principles and political process. Politics and or economics as systems simply serve life process not the other way around if one has to make hierarchical evaluation.

III. Power Sharing, National Reconciliation
I do not believe in the idea of “power sharing” or “national reconciliations” as a way of appeasing highly vocal Diaspora Ethiopians by the Government of Ethiopia. I read these types of solutions promoted now and then by Diaspora politicians and even scholars. As a matter of principle as far as I can see, no government should be forced into using extra constitutional political process to accommodate any dissenting group. Such process of “power sharing” and “national reconciliation” introduces a corrupt structure into the constitutional law based democratic process. Those Ethiopians in the Diaspora who hunger for power ought to undergo the political process as laid out in the 1995 Ethiopian Constitution, the elections regulations, the many laws of the State of Ethiopia as is.

Sustainable and productive change in Ethiopia is going to be time consuming considering the fact that the political setup is already the work of one single group that came to power by force. The choice is ours, either to use the same process of force used by the EPRDF or use the existing political structure and the economic opportunities open for development as a tool to gain power over an extended period of time. Here is where the concept of “baby-steps” comes into good use. Let us not mix the two systems of taking power and confuse unsuspecting often emotional individuals to get hurt in violent demonstrations against a government that has full control of the means of extreme enforcement power. The art of living the good life is no different from the art of war—a great general will assess the strength and weakness of his own army as much as those of his enemies.

IV. No “Arab-Spring” for Ethiopia
The idea that the EPRDF organization is weak and the political setup it has succeeded to place in power for the last twenty years can be toppled by “Arab-Spring” type public demonstration is simplistic and totally wrong approach. The better approach is to use the political and economic opportunities that the new Ethiopian Administration has introduced to promote its own agenda of political and economic staying power to ones advantages. No one can argue defending that what we have in Ethiopia is a great political and economic system. However, when the reality on the ground is such that there are possibilities to improve such a system, one should take advantage of the situation and influence the future political and economic direction of the country. The Blue Party is taking its first political step: establishing itself as an independent locally born political organization. If it tries to use this initial stage to coerce the Ethiopian Government to “share power” or start negotiation for “national reconciliation” it will definitely lose grounds maybe even its very existence. What it can do is to use its newly acquired visibility to promote human rights and political rights through conferences, charitable organizations, and education. Already there are several cases of famous Ethiopians, such as Eskinder Nega, Andualem Aragie et cetera who have become international personalities, that the Blue Party can champion in a responsible fashion.

There are many in the Diaspora who would love to see the Blue Party fight their (the Diaspora) type of fight against the current Ethiopian government. Their gifted writers might write endless articles encouraging even goring the Blue Party to mount massive demonstrations in opposition to the Ethiopian Government using as pretext the imprisonments of political and religious leaders. Any kind of assumption that an “Arab-Spring” type public protest would change the Ethiopian political structure is based on a misreading and misunderstanding of what happened in Arab Countries. Any kind of assumption of parallel development between Arabs and Ethiopians would result in disaster, for Ethiopians are not fanatics but rational. At any rate, a Syrian type insurrection or rebellion (revolution) is not possible in Ethiopia. Where would you find such fanatical fighters for a cause in the Ethiopian setting? Take our local examples about rebellion: for TPLF, it took seventeen years; for EPLF, it took some thirty years; for OLF, it is still going on for over forty years et cetera.

V. Solidarity of Ethiopians: The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
Our Ethiopian history to the present time has shown the undeniable fact that at moments of great turmoil, the people of Ethiopia and their leaders have set their differences aside and stood shoulder to shoulder defending our national interest. This time is no different. No matter how we feel about Meles Zenawi as a person and as a leader, his legacy is going to be with us for some time affecting our political and economic decisions. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Abay River is one monumental structure that will continue to be a subject of controversy and discussion for some time. There can be no backing down and reversal of our course in history in order to undo the dam building project. Managing our own natural resource, such as our rivers, is the attribute of our Ethiopian Sovereignty. Egypt and Sudan will benefit even more so due to the close economic tie between all the nations of the region due to the economic tie of having built the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and stretching power grids allover Sub-Saharan Africa including Sudan and Egypt.

The recent irrational ranting of some Egyptian politicians about sabotaging the building of the Renaissance Dam is completely out of line. First of all Egypt will never be at risk due to water shortage even if the Nile completely dries up. One must know Egypt is sitting on the largest subterranean fresh water in the World that could meet its needs for centuries. “Researchers from the British Geological Survey and University College London have for the first time mapped the aquifers, or groundwater, across the continent and the amount they hold. The largest groundwater volumes are found in the large sedimentary aquifers in the North African countries Libya, Algeria, Egypt and Sudan,’ the scientists said in their paper.” [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2133339/Massive-underground-reserves-water-Africa.html#ixzz2VXhANOnI]Any threat by Egypt or any other country on Ethiopia must be met with reason reinforced with military commitment to preserve the sovereign power of Ethiopia on its resources and protect the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Moreover, Ethiopia’s building of the Renaissance Dam is a guarantee for both Egypt and Sudan of a reservoir of fresh water not to mention the source of cheap hydroelectric power. The Muslim Brotherhood dominated Egyptian politicians are simply using the Ethiopian Dam building as a pretext for their eternal goal to destroy Ethiopia’s Christianity. Look what is happening in Egypt already, Mohammed Morsi’s Government is imprisoning and charging those brave men and women who started the rebellion in Egypt and made it possible through their sacrifices for an unknown academic to get elected as President of Egypt. Mind you the Brotherhood was a bystander of that movement and only joined later when victory was within reach, and proceeded to steal the work-product of the democratic movement and is trying to change Egypt into a Sharia-law State right this moment.

In Conclusion
I look at the Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM) as the best example of a people preserving Ethiopia. People ask me often what is there in SEPDM that attracts me that much that I did not find in the many other Ethiopian political parties and/or organizations in Ethiopia or in the Diaspora. What I find highly commendable in the Members of SEPDM is simply put their undivided Ethiopiawnet. They are the only multiethnic group that have maintained the glorious vision of ancient Ethiopia, for their official language is Amharic and their official script/alphabet is the Ge’ez Alphabet. What is not to love in these wonderful Ethiopians whether it is their sense of equality among all, superb variety of songs, music, and choreographed dance, their great skill in construction, and their insurmountable sense of beauty in their weaving et cetera all add up in making me feel confident that the next generation of Ethiopians will have something from our historic past to build on.

In this brief article, my effort is to focus our many problems into manageable sizes with clarity that we can deal with without much confusion. Nevertheless, there are certain areas that must not be crossed by any opposition group that undermines the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia and the political and economic development plans of the current Ethiopian Government. My fellow Ethiopians, never fear anyone threatening us rattling worn-out and rusty saber, for we have survived over three thousand years surviving far more formidable threats to our survival as a civilization, and having fought countless battles against enemies from outside and from within.

You did it again. Your counseling is very well taken. A mass gathering, although necessary is not a necessary and sufficient condition for founding a functional alternative to the existing condition. I will soon join your rank when I address the concerns of Professor Messay Kebede and Dr. Demelash’ counter hegemonic vision to the hegemony of the ruling regime.

I am now carefully observing the regime through the lense of your challenges before I respond in a full fledged article, in the near future.

Yemogne leqiso Melso melalso, yemibalewn yimeslal yante tishuf as divesionary act of the silent majority from achieving economic and political freedom, in a non-violent uprising by telling us: “The better approach is to use the political and economic opportunities that the new Ethiopian Administration has introduced to promote its own agenda of economic staying power to its own advantages”.

What economic opportunities has the new administration has set up other than carrying out the Grand Transformation Project already in place to which the controversial Grand Dam Project? Are you only fixated to ETV and serving as an extension to ETV propaganda or are you telling us your contention to interviews in ESAT with an economist? Is it not TPLF/EFFORT taking advantage of economic opportunity from the Dam Project serving as supplier? Is it not that the set up of the TPLF/eprdf regime incorporated in the constitution in a colonial and/or Ex-Apartheid system, where the economic and political power were in the hands of the Dutch Boers to which the current regime draws parallel to that for the most part and supported by TPLF affiliated enterprises, cadres and foreign corporations as well as the teletafi parties forming puppet governments to TPLF/eprdf regime, and yet seeking “yekilil Mengistat ikulent mekeber, and political space as if political space is a quantive measure, rather than qualitative measure where you either have it or you do not have it? Is it not true that SEPDM, packed with 45 nationalities bargaining for the above ultimatums, along with TPLF,OPDM, ONC and ANDEM with single ethnic group? Should they have been challenging the constitution and the TPLF/eprdf regime for individual freedom, liberty and equality to super cede ethnic and secessionist rights to form a democratic government that rules by the consent of governed in order to take advantage of economic opportunities in a free market capitalism, where the majority have land ownership rights as one of the means of production anywhere in Ethiopia, rather than tantalizing us with economic opportunities by the current administration as if the political models SEPDM/eprdf.

This tigrean professor does not want the government to share power with exiled opposition. he does not approve of the idea of national reconciliation. he does not want semayawi party to mount significant challenges to the tplf regime for change. he does not want us to stage syrian type rebellion or revolution. he wants us to sit down idly and passively and let things happen to us. he wants to maintain the status quo: tigrean political and economic domination of ethiopia. change is inevitable. but i have come to conclude that this guy is no less wicked than the actual tplf power mongers.

    1) We Diaspora Ethiopians have lost the art of patience, fortitude, and perseverance. We seem to think that social changes must occur immediately. We do have real psychological problems.

    My REPLY:

Now a bit good step forward in that you now admit and include yourself as a Diaspora and also you admit that we do have real psychological problems.
Yes I agree and admit that we do have real psychological problems and thanks mainly to those racist, looting and psychopathic Neo-Colonialism surrogates and mercenaries (TPLF and EPLF) who have created this all tragic mess in this historical nation. Yes not only social economic and political problems but also following these chronic problems we do have real psychological problems in that we request the incumbent to change its inherently looting, racist and mercenary well established system with a single demonstration and even within 3 months. Yes we have been severely dehumanized by TPLF and hence have lost our locus of control in that we swing like a pendulum with such high amplitude with no equilibrium gentle position. And eventually we have become like kids who easily get happy/upset with minor good/bad things. This is how such psychopathic, corrupt and savage regimes like TPLF dehumanize and easily manipulate their subject mass. Your article even sounds like that. You are telling us that we have no other fate except TPLF. If you have the slightest sense of human dignity then you know that a man of high caliber endowed with the intrinsic sense of human dignity enables others like wise to achieve same sense of human dignity. What have been TPLF and EPLF (Liberating Fronts) doing for the last 4 decades? Are they Liberators of human dignity or enslavements of human dignity? Whatever flaws the Diaspora may have but you have to stop exploiting it as a rationalizing justification for your corrupt, looting, racist and mercenary stooge TPLF governance. We have the right to criticize or demonize the Diaspora based on its own 1001 flaws but it is sheer absurdity to justify the continuation of the governance of the incumbent TPLF based on the flaws of the Diaspora. And indeed we not only do have real psychological problems but also we will continue to have more of it as long as TPLF does not stop its insanity of megalomania to stay in power using all possible options. And I tell you confidently that this megalomaniac insanity of TPLF shall consume TPLF itself eventually with in itself.

    1) Here is where I challenged in my two previous articles Diaspora politicians to take note of the changed circumstance in the political power structure of the EPRDF, and the fact that Meles Zenawi is dead, and that we have a new Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn.

    My REPLY:

For those still/yet naive and gullible who simply hype democracy, human rights and Constitutional law violations and also who only emphasize on mere personification of mere stooge political leaders like Meles or HD locally or like Obama abroad while totally ignoring and covering-up the underlying pervasive global social order of the day(Global Capitalism and its Neo-Liberal and Neo-Colonialism Imperialistic Projects) then please read the following excerpt and its resource article link as follows.

“The break with fundamental Constitutional principles and procedures cannot be explained by focusing on the personal characteristics of the president, however unattractive they may be. The source of the change is lodged in the economic imperatives of imperialism and the class structure of American society, with its unprecedented levels of social polarization. The ruling class recognizes all too clearly that the deteriorating conditions of life for the overwhelming majority of people must lead to social unrest. From its standpoint, the undermining of Constitutional guarantees is preparation for the suppression of struggles by the working class and youth against intolerable social conditions, inequality and militarism.”

    Tecola said:
“…Here is where I challenged in my two previous articles Diaspora politicians to take note of the changed circumstance in the political power structure of the EPRDF, and the fact that Meles Zenawi is dead, and that we have a new Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn…”

Tecola, if you think Hailemariam Desalegn has any power, you’re an educated fool or you’re trying to fool Ethiopians. Hailearmiam is a racist powerless puppet and opportunist that chose to be used by TPLF. As a born-again Christian, Hailemariam never once stood against the Human Rights Abuse in Ethiopia. Instead, he chose to dine and wine with the murderers and looters of Ethiopia/ns. Hailemariam wouldn’t be living in the palace, if he didn’t have the same philosophy as dictator Meles and the rest of TPLF, particularly, the deep-rooted hate towards Amharas.
The late brutal dictator that died with the blood of countless number of Ethiopians on his hands, also manipulated and told Ethiopians what they wanted to hear and came as a man that loved Ethiopia and Ethiopians. The late tyrant used the patriotic Amharas to remove fascist Mengestu, knowing all along that soulless dictator hated Amharas and couldn’t wait to abuse and oppress the very people that scarified their lives to bring the other mass murderer, Mengestu out of power. I’ve been wondering, if the recent peaceful demonstration in Addis is orchestrated by TPLF just to show and fool the West that the current TPLF-Hailemariam D. administration is more democratic than dictator Meles’s. TPLF would do everything under the sun till they get what they came to do–DISMANTLE ETHIOPIA AND DEVELOP GREATER TIGREA. There is no Democracy where the people are ruled with iron fist and one small ethnic group controlling the entire Ethiopian govt. and all its major businesses.

full of denial, I would say, to the least. We all know that CUD won 2005 election. And yet u are blaming them for not accepting what ever result was given to them by the EPRDF. I would have agreed to your argument and hence the structure of your article, had you not left out the truth to what happened in 2005, that the EPRDF totally lost the election and hence to be the government. So in light of this, I personally disregard your ideas.

Girum in his #7 remark said in response to Prof. Tecola Hagos’s article deriding/lambasting the Diaspora: ” What ever flaws the Diaspora may have but you must stop exploiting it as a rationalizing justification for your corrupt, looting, racist, mercenary stooge TPLF governance”, in addition to his other argumentative position I commented on #2 above. This statement invalidates Prof. Tecola Hagos’s theisis/argumentative position in these and the previous articles. By mere logics if the premise is false, so is the conclusion.

[[…are you telling us your contention to interviews in ESAT with an economist?..]]

If you are talking about Dr. Getachew’s one sided analysis that paints a rosy picture of US financial systems by telling us how great the Federal Reserve, minting of money etc. is done neo-liberally in a “perfect” manner, forget about it! because we are living today in the worst recession since the Great Depression here in the in United States. Meles was far ahead of the game in the field of developmental economics hands down.

[[.. Is it not TPLF/EFFORT taking advantage of economic opportunity from the Dam Project serving as supplier?..]]

So what? What is wrong in taking advantage of a project the developmental party initiated itself to one of its own firms? Who should they award the contract to? Yelma Engineering? :) Instead of Mesfin Engineering? Why should Ethiopians trust other private firms more than the NGO types such as Mesfin’s from Tigrai to do such a project?

[[.. Is it not that the set up of the TPLF/eprdf regime incorporated in the constitution in a colonial and/or Ex-Apartheid system, where the economic and political power were in the hands of the Dutch Boers to which the current regime draws parallel..]]

Unlike the ex-Apartheid system TPLF/EPRDF has been made a transitional platform by Meles’s vision. The “vision” is what HD is implementing not the archaic TPLF/EPLF program for “independence”. I know you and many others don’t want to acknowledge that fact; That Meles out grew the narrow view a long time ago. The “vision” is an advanced platform. I understand TPLF type names are outdated names in essence and confuse some folks but there is no doubt the “vision” has the upper hand in EPRDF and the nation.

If you ask me, you are the one who do “Yemogne leqiso Melso melalso”. Repeating ad nauseam that false “Tigrai independence” theory written by Meles? when he was a kid? I think we should get over that and forget about it and look at the latest Meles’s vision.

The two Tigreans are at it again. Teodros Kiros blindly supports Tecola. “blood is thicker than water.” Tecola is desperately trying to be relevant at this late, late stage. The Semayawi Party train has departed, and these verbose clowns could not hold it back. I fully concur with the five or six comments above that portray poor Tecola in his true colors!

አቶ ተኮላ የሚያስጅምሩት ውይይት ጥሩ ነው::

The fundamental assumption in this article is that the democracy movement / opposition / diaspora is extremely weak all the way from the leadership to the grassroots. It has almost no money and no organization and no grassroots participation. It has almost no power and almost no tangible (in terms of money, mobilization, etc.) support. This I think is a fact with which no one can disagree.

All of Ato Tecola’s recommendations stem from the above assumption. For example, he advises the Blue Party to focus on establishing itself – building up its grassroots, organization, etc. – instead of trying to organize larger demonstrations, while the party itself remains weak and hollow. He says that we should not act as if an ‘Arab spring’ is around the corner. He would not have offered this advice to the demonstrators in Cairo 2011. Nor to the demonstrators in Manila in 1986. Why? Because their movements were already strong and organized, and only the last step was needed. In Ethiopia, that’s not the case, and 2005 showed what happens when you try to confront a dictatorship without organization and mobilization. So Ato Tecola is right on when he advises the opposition to first strengthen itself. I wish all of us would have understood this back in 2005.

In summary, I don’t think Ato Tecola is asking the democracy movement to ignore human rights abuses or become ‘soft’ on the dictatorship. He’s advising that we focus on doing our groundwork first – doing whatever is necessary to strengthen ourselves.

The dam issue is a sidenote to the article. There are a lot of us who fully support the idea of using not only hydropower but also irrigation from the Nile, but who don’t support this dam because we think it is poorly designed. The government has not come up with a comprehensive case for why it chose this option instead of building more dams upstream which present less risk and better potential for irrigation. If it screws up this project, then not only will Ethiopia lose a lot of money, but also if it wants to build more, it will be faced with more diplomatic pressure saying “you’ve had your chance to build on the Nile – no more.” What the Ethiopian government and Ethiopians need now is not blind cheerleading of the dam but pointed criticism, in order to steel the project and make it strong. Blind cheerleading would be the same as the blind opposition that Ato Tecola talks about.

Prof. Tecola Hagos has been very consistent in his argument .
His suggestion for the future of Ethiopia, has/is very much tied to the survival of his on & off beloved TPLF organization. Of course, with all due respect, he can’t come out & say it loud as such the result he has to add some funny stories for entertainment & cover up. .
His latest fantasy/cover up is how HD is turning the TPLF into a cohesive democratic force. The model he suggests is based on none other than the TPLF created Southern party which has no real support by the citizens of the region. The PM has already shown, as the expression goes) that he doesn’t know whether he is coming or going!!!

It is better to leave alone the young folks in Blue Party to make their own contributions instead of writing endlessly about what they should do & what not!!! If our Scholar wants to help how about providing some advice to his TPlf friends that the road to dictatorship is decadent & has no way out. The sooner they realize the better our country will be back to the citizens of the mighty Ethiopia.

[[…the most important mistake Tekola is making is that you belive that Hailemariam has the full power. This is totaly wrong. EPDF people may lough at you let alone others…]]

No one gives anyone full power in a silver platter if that is what you are thinking.

Meles took power by sheer hard work and extra ordinary discipline in taking care of business. No one gave him power. He had explained that phenomena to some youth group in a video I saw where he said something like this, “You take power but, not physically :-) and that is the way I do it, with a big smile”. Indeed he has shown them/youth how to take the center stage locally & internationally in several occasions because he sets & leads the agenda on hand.

HD can do same is the point; no one is going to give or take away power from him.

The tired old guards will step aside as they did for Meles. So it is up to HD to take power. There is no doubt that he has what it takes to do it. In the present world situation no one can do a military take over of a government and survive the storm, the carpet will be pulled from under them quickly. No worries there. So if HD does his job right he will be the indispensable leader that completes Meles’s vision.

    Tecola,
Don’t you think Ethiopians know that HD is not a democratically elected prime minister and that he was handpicked and crowned by TPLF? The despicable crimes TPLF have been doing for the last 23 years, continues till these days with HD is a prime minister or not. Tecola, you’ve exposed yourself who you really are. Ethiopians cannot manipulated any longer. 25 years ago TPLF came with a fake olive-branch and ever since, they haven’t stopped looting and committing crimes against the country and the people of Ethiopia. The fake Prime Minister HD has no power to stop his beloved TPLF that put him in the palace. The puppet PM, HD hasn’t freed not even one innocent Ethiopian prisoners who are rotting in Woyane prisons around the country. HD is a real traitor that sold his souls to the devil.

In an era of globally integrated financial markets and production, no country can insulate itself from the consequences of an economic crisis in any major geographic sector. The 2008 sub-prime mortgage collapse in the United States destabilized Europe. Though its impact was somewhat delayed, the crisis is becoming increasingly evident in China, India and Brazil, which are heavily dependent on their export markets in the major capitalist centers.”

    ግሩም:

[[….We have the right to criticize or demonize the Diaspora based on its own 1001 flaws but it is sheer absurdity to justify the continuation of the governance of the incumbent TPLF based on the flaws of the Diaspora. And indeed we not only do have real psychological problems but also we will continue to have more of it as long as TPLF does not stop its insanity of megalomania to stay in power using all possible options. And I tell you confidently that this megalomaniac insanity of TPLF shall consume TPLF itself eventually with in itself…]]

I have not seen anywhere where Prof. Tecola justified a continuation of the present authoritarian regime. The last time I checked his blog he doesn’t even accept the separation of Eritrea and considered Meles to be a Trojan horse of the separatist group despite his limited participation in the transitional government after the fall of the Derg. So I think you Girum you is over criticizing the man.

I on the other hand, think the authoritarian government of EPRDF based on the latest Meles’s vision which is similar to the visions promoted by the Asian Tigers where economical development is promoted is the correct path for our country.

Given that we have abject poverty, inequality and social instability that should be considered as a national disaster requiring quick decision making a typical liberal democracy is not viable. Under this situation an authoritarian type of government can do a much better job. As historic experience tells us richer, more educated and more equal countries are more likely to be democratic. Being patient with Meles’s vision as a transition will avoid the ethnic demagogues [did you see OLF demonstration in Cairo] from doing more harm to our country.

As Tecola said, HD coming from a multi-ethnic organization will not tolerate sectarian movements that exist in the country today and won’t hesitate in applying the constitution’s full force. The sectarians have the right to exist and advocate their thinking but when they commit crime like ethnic cleansing they will be taken to court. As the racists KKK in the United States, when they commit crime the courts put them in jail and confiscate their properties as needed.

You have a third path that I have to admit is very convincing but totally ignored by the forum Diaspora writers because it questions the premises of their opposition. I presume they don’t know what to do with your comments.

On the other hand, I feel you may have a better chance to be listened to with the other side if you weren’t too abrasive and too antagonistic. I don’t know why you don’t look at Meles’s vision instead of just the known wrong path TPLF came to power with. Meles has worked all his life to arrive to his latest vision of becoming like the Asian Tigers and only then shall the ground work for Democracy be established.

    MY REPLY:

Let’s have a new “Paradigm-Shift” making a quantum leap so that we come out of the Vicious-Circle entrapments(like TPLF Ethnics Politics and its ensuing messes insidiously setup by foreign powers) we have been intricately entangled. So why not the knowledgeable Tecola write whistle-blower and eye-opening articles like as is shown bellow so that we can have a new paradigm-shift perspective on our deep-rooted and multifaceted problems? Why do we unnecessarily waste our precious time, energy and dear life based on “black and white” “death and life” extremely polarized and narrowly based Vicious-Circle entrapments; On one extreme side to sustain the status-quo of TPLF governance and the pervasive system of its foreign backers and on the other extreme hand on ferociously toppling and dismantling this status-quo. Let’s come out from the black and white polarized extremism and then let’s come to the gray area. For example Dr. Fekadu Bekele has recently posted such a whistle-blower and eye-opening article with a heading “ወያኔን ማስወገድ አይደለም የሚያስቸግረው፤ አስቸጋሪው ነገር አገርን መገንባት ነው !!በፈቃዱ በቀለ” http://www.abugidainfo.com/amharic/

Our naïve and gullible stereotypical Ethiopian politicians and intellectuals failed to figure out that the main owners and guardian of the system (Global Capitalism) shall not transfer real power to the naïve and gullible mass through mere electoral democracy. To understand this bitter reality it is good to remind articles like this.

    Selam ግሩም :

    What makes us so unique?

The way I see it, the “china model” as any authoritarian developmental state government will continue to make sure citizens will not up rise against it by creating jobs and improving the standard of living.

Even though such systems are not immune from adjustment push from global credit conditions they are willing to adapt to new situations. China today for example is adapting by shifting its focus from inward to outward investment. It is using its foreign reserve working to its favor. The party is opening up to business people by recruiting them to be party members. And such people are helping the party to extend its arm in the private sector where party branches are established. Such moves extend the life of the party as long as possible however, eventually the middle class would require more openness as in the developed world and the ground work for democracy will be strongly established and the party will be obsolete.

I think that is what Sebhat Nega is talking about when he says of the eventual disappearances of EPRDF from the face of the earth. He knows that time will come when a strong developmental state steps aside or be completely gone.

So Meles’s vision is a good transition.

I consider the “Land grab” is just a lease to kick start the commercial farming sector. If you just read the Karuturi land lease agreement instead of listening to foreign voyeurs who want to keep us backward, the government can cancel it anytime with a proper notice and compensation. BTW, I just read that (“Why they are failing has to be analyzed,” said Mr. Tefera, adding that the government was assessing Karuturi’s progress and a final report was expected in July. The government will consider all options including revoking the land lease if need be http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/world/karuturi-debacle-prompts-ethiopia-to-review-land-policy/article4772306.ece ).

I expect “የመለስን የ3 ቢሊዮን” if it exists and EFFORT’s profit to be used in the implementing of Meles’s vision. Azeb is in charge for that to be happening. What we know is not only the vision is her husbands but she has participated in the arms struggle to make changes in her country. So if the organizations Azeb presently running are the firms who are building the Grand Renaissance Dam, what ever profit they are making will go back to reconstruct and help Meles’s vision come through. I have no reason to assume otherwise. Why should I? Why should I assume other private firms will do better for the country?

Dawi #14. With respect to the first two responses to my previous comments, although with false conclusion with respect to creating similar for the most part an apartheid system of governance over the newly created ethnic federalism “ethnic homelands-the killil”, secessionism, and totaliarinism in the constitution along with exploitation, political and economic strangle hold of the countries resources by TPLF/Political, TPLF/epffort, TPLF affiliated enterprises, cadres and foreign corporations and the expulsion of the Amhara ethnic group from other regions. With that remaining in tact the author is defending the TPLF/eprdf regime of newly appointed Prime Minister, whose power has been circumvented by the TPLF polit-beurro to have brought economic opportunities to the above mentioned entities but not to the silent majority of Ethiopians. You are steadfastly vouching the late Prime Minister’s vision, a lately conceived ploy over the Grand Transformation and the Grand Dam Project, an infrastructure to generate only electricity but not for irrigation in area with draught incidences to contribute to the evaporative demand of the atmosphere to say the least about the cost of removing the silt deposits and cost of transmission grids in terms of cost benefit analysis, when the TPLF/eprdf regime would have harnessed 20 or more other tributaries both for electricity and irrigated farms to satisfy demand for domestic consumption of electricity and food supply.

With that you have made it clear that both of you are aligned with the negative forces of disintegration of TPLF/eprdf regime composed of ex-liberation fronts, which fought for liberation against oppression of nations and nationalities, which upon the defeat of the Derg regime which nevertheless stood for Ethiopian unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, never the less committed human right violations in the same fashion as the TPLF/eprdf regime, to which I ascribed your cry according to the Ethiopian saying. You may assign the same saying to me if you only acknowledge that I am crying for the silent majority of Ethiopian tax payers who nurtured and educated me with their tax money and on behalf of Ethiopian people with the goals for Ethiopian unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality ahead of ethnic and secessionist rights, which shared by the positive forces of integration, that opposes to a colonial style and/or the ex-apartheid style of governance from the black South Africans came out of. What the the silent majority of Ethiopians want a priori or simultaneously and willingly the ratification of the constitution with regard to Article 2, the flag, Article 46, ethnic federalism, secessionism and totaliarinism, and Article 8 and making individual freedom, liberty, and equality as the center piece of the constitution. After all it is the constitution that the TPLF/eprdf regime and its party alignments along the ethnic lines has grip to stay in power with its divide and rule policy, supported by the teletafi parties, the loyalist opposition parties, the security federal police and military forces is/are defending according to Ato sibhat Nega “yihene ye anidinetchin ina yeethiopiawinetachen mililket yemitsare binor tor ingetmawelen” yalew, an ironical pretext.

[[..With that you have made it clear that both of you are aligned with the negative forces of disintegration of TPLF/eprdf regime composed of ex-liberation fronts, which fought for liberation against oppression of nations and nationalities, which upon the defeat of the Derg regime which nevertheless stood for Ethiopian unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity..]]

Yes I supported the “liberation of oppression of nations and nationalities”, until I was disappointed by Isayas/EPLF who I thought was the “Angafaw” Ethiopian liberation movement. They didn’t even join the transitional Ethiopian government for god’s sake! Now I understand Meles/TPLF pushed Isayas out but, as an Ethiopian he had the right to demand to be included; at least demand the old federation to be restored. Isayas Didn’t.

The other day I was listening to what Ato Mulugeta Lule talking on ESAT saying that Meles wrote the book on Eritrea. He also said, did you know that Isayas never wrote a book? :-) It is funny but true. Would that qualifies him as more Ethiopian than Meles? Yes, if ignorance was a virtue?:-) I guess both Isayas and Sibhat do the walking, talking and the fighting but not the writing. That’s somebody else’s job.

Be that as it may, what is the benefit of the Derg standing for Ethiopian Unity to you? Knowing that it brought and allowed EPLF/TPLF to overtake them? Don’t they have something to do with such utter weakness of the country? So Derg didn’t really stand for territorial integrity after all? Besides TPLF, the Derg’s stupidity made us lose the northern region to a rag tag army of EPLF. Meles as Mulugeta said figured to get rid of Isayas because that man won’t allow him to get where he wants to go; to the top.

He still had to fight EPLF later on with high cost of lives but today he had put Isayas more or less in a cage. The chauvinists in Eritrea have subsided unlike Egypt’s [per Museveni of Uganda]. Sooner of later the Unionists will rise in Eritrea and the Egyptian chauvinists will be defeated. I say Meles’s latest vision is in the process of uniting the country including Eritrea down the line. The GERD is not just a 6 thousand mega watt electric power to supply Sudan & Egypt but, above all our common purpose goal. The Ethiopian Renaissance; it is going to help us go back to our historical greatness; as noted by others Ethiopia is a rising power and Egypt is a falling one. It has already changed our image and there is no going back. Not for a minute!

[[Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called on Egypt "to restrain its chauvinistic statements" on Ethiopia's Nile dam, Uganda's Daily ...]]

Did Medrek say EPRDF didn’t do enough diplomatic work before starting GERD? How could they be so wrong? I give EPRDF A + for the diplomatic work they have done. It just can’t be done any better than that period. Sudan supports it. 10 out 11 riparian states are in the same book. Even an Iranian paper called Mursi a Dam Dam! C’MON Medrek!

I think Medrek should be taken to court for treason for what they are doing. :-) I can’t believe they are allying with Egypt chauvinists at this point? They have lost it. No wonder Islamawi or semayawi party is getting ahead of them?

Girum # 25. Thanks for bringing up Dr. Befekadu Bekeles article entitled ” weyanen masweged aydelem yemiaschegrew: aschegarew neger agern megenbat new:;” as your talking point now and “free market capitalism and global capitalism of the same person’s article from your own perspective as causative agent to economic and political problems in Ethiopia. Both of his articles are superb adds knowledge and understanding to the reader, but to use it as talking point to our political discourse varies on our understanding of the article by Dr. Fekadu Bekele in both cases.

Whereas in his article he elaborated on global capitalism as major controlling force in the economic arena to all developing and developed countries alike, he never used it as the cause to Ethiopia’s economic, humanitarian, political and environmental crises in Ethiopia, while you may have used as a primary factor to Ethiopia’s economic and political crises. Putting that as a major factor is masking the effect of the TPLF/eprdf regime as perpetrator of humanitarian, economic, political, and environmental crises perpetrated by TPLF/eprdf regime for the last 22 years, where within the political crises are included expulsion and ex appropriation of land to foreign corporations. It means that at the core of the problem/the causative agent is the frame work of the constitution built into it the ideologies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism, which modified State capitalism in its economic model, that does not lend itself to free market capitalism to the silent majority of Ethiopians, democracy with individual freedom/rights super cedes ethnic and secessionist rights. Once that kind of freedom and democracy takes a foot hold in Ethiopia, global capitalism will have similar or slightly different impact on the developing and the developed nations.

My take on the current article you cited, and I thank you for that is that what uses as his argumentative position, I presume is that ” yechgru minchina wanna mikniyat iskaltewegede dires wedefit fekek mallet aychalim”, where goes about elaborating what to be done in the event of TPLF/eprdf regime’s down fall, by organizing under a common goal and forming strategies to achieve those goals and forming a consortium to brainstorm ideas to advance Ethiopia in the 21st century as one great nation, I presume.

Firs let me set the record straight regarding Hailemariam as i know him very well from his young age. Tecola Hagos knows too well the fact that Hailemariam (HD) is a woyane puppet who is there only and only to carry out woyane’s plan of looting and repression as written on the script with no ifs and buts and with no alteration. Tecola knows too well that HD can not ask and tell about what he is doing. He just carries the evil task much like a donkey. HD is a dumb willing puppet actor for an instrument of repression and brutality. He is the contemporary Tamirat Layne. Both Tamirat and Hailemariam earned woyane’s favour in much the same way with their banda character, with their insatiable desire to be used as mercenary puppets and their willingness to be used as tools for the grand ideology of woyane which is based on hate for the amhara people. As i said above, I personally and quite onestly know Hailemariam and how a reclusive opportunist he is who tries to back-stab and ride on peoples back if it favours his tiny belly. Ever since HD jumped into the woyane band wagon the word “Neftegna” has never been absent from his mediocre and unthoughtful talk. His friends mostly from the Wolayita tribe who were flocking with him were singing the new found anti-amhara sentiment that was orchestrated by woyane and to them the ordinary amhara is the enemy. In wolayita Sodo, in the wake of the end of the monarchy and the beginning of Derg’s repression several people from amhara and tigray were hacked to death in a tribally orchestrated hate campaign. Among those hacked to death in wolayita at that time, Ato Tiruneh, a hotel owner from Amhara and one gentle man from Tigray who was a garage owner are included. Ironically the person who was spearheading this hate driven inhuman murder of completely innocent people has been given a hero status by the contemporary tribal haters, Hailemariam and his likes. This is a despicable story. But this man with the name Solomon was himself allegedly murdered by Derg while he was trying to escape when MEISON was on the run. Woyane has no ideology except the ideology of hate. unfortunately Tecola Hagos devolves into the same category. In fact he is obsessed with deep seated amhara-phobia and tigre tribal superiority much like the Serbian mentality of ethnic chauvinism that eventually led to an ugly war and disintegration of Yugoslavia. Tecola’s writing is rich with sectarianism, deep seated pathological hate for the Amharas and for the greater portion of Ethiopians whom he in a very derogatory manner and criminally labelled as aliens, “Mehal Sefaris” and peripherals, Bantus, etc. A man who is emotionally obsessed with such level of criminal hate and xenophobia , the kind of ‘sane-looking’ articles he throws such as this one carries no value and has no weight. It does not in any way sway the million-ton reality of who Tecola Hagos is, what he represents and how he wanted the world to know him for.

    Fikreab,
Well said my brother and very truthful! After Ethiopians witnessed the three or four decades of evil-hateful-racist history of TPLF and Woyanes like HD — only people with an IQ of zero and the mental challenged get persuaded and manipulated by the likes of Tecola Hagoes. Tecola still thinks Ethiopians are the same gullible people that were easily manipulated by him, dictator Meles, dictator Isayas and the rest of TPLF 40-50 years ago. I don’t know Tecola, but he seems to be a very arrogant man that has a nerve to tell Ethiopians that HD is an independent man that is different from TPLF…ha! Beware Ethiopians! Beware of the snakes in the grass! Never forget the tens of thousands innocent Ethiopians still rotting in jail, the tens of thousands that have been slaughtered and the 85 millions of Ethiopians that are being robbed and being treated as a second class citizens… The Bible teaches us not to forget the innocent victims that are locked up in cold rat infested prisons as we speak. One innocent victim is one too many, let alone millions! There is no one good enough reason in the entire world to mistreat, loot and murder innocent human beings to benefit the few!

    Anbesaw Agesa,
Hello! This is not Aigaforum. An embarrassment is Wining and dining and having close relationship in one way or another with looters and murderers of Ethiopia and law abiding Ethiopians. TPLF are so calculated and their tactics are too many to count. You might be able to fool some, but the most majority of Ethiopians have seen enough in the last 25 yrs and will not be manipulated again — TPLF disguise as an Amhara, Guragaie, Oromo, and other ethnic Ethiopians and as Muslims and Christians to confuse Ethiopians to commit their dirty deeds and commit unspeakable crimes against Ethiopia and Ethiopians.
Once again, Ethiopians beware of Snakes in the Grass!
