The Reappearance Derg’s Villain as Book writer: Half story is spin! By Ewnetu Sime

A former military junta (better known as the Derg) official Prime Minister (PM) Fikre Selassie Wogderess wrote a book in Amharic entitled “Igna-ena Abyoitu” meaning: “Us (we) and The Revolution”. The author wrote his version of story of Derg’s history from the day it was formed to the end. During this period our beloved country plunged almost two decades of oppressive and repressive dictatorship. It seems obvious the seed of the problem has different basis but the main one is not only Mengistu’s but the Derg itself desire to maintain a monopoly of state power by brutal force. Ethiopians were governed by absolute tyranny and terror. The arguments or information presented in the book blame EPRP for all the aspects of political, social and economic failures. While the regime that was in power never accept responsibility or had no regret for their actions. It contains full of excuses for all their failures. When you are reading the book you lose the purpose of writing a book if the book never tells you at least some of the known truths. This book failed to offer new lesson.

The author try to tell us in slow and deliberate process there is no despotic government during his period. The extreme ruthlessness of his government including random killing around every corner of the cities in late 70’s committed murder is to defend a revolution. The story he composed does not shield him from fact that the country was lived for almost two decade under the horrors of the dictatorships rule, in which the author was part of it. He was one of the mindless herds in Derg without regard for human life except cheering Mengistu Haile Mariam throughout the book for his short term survival. As Mengistu’s power grew the author was quietly working with him as others seemingly reasonable men are filtered out of the system, and PM Fikre Selassie has been promoted. We knew Fikre Selassie’s superior Mengistu was a modern monster like Stalin or Pol Pot solely on the whims of himself that answers to no one. Under Mengistu’s command, Derg always acted without conscience and had massacred a generation in his tyranny rule. He is nether willing to establish all inclusive democratic system, nor able to end the civil war. What he left was the destruction of economic infrastructure and followed by ethnic based ruthless regime. This book justifies brutality as a means for “saving revolution”. Furthermore, due to number of human rights violations including, detentions, extra-judicial killings, summary executions, maladministration and wrong policy, Derg lost in battle field the peasant army. The country became vulnerable, poverty wide spread, ethnic division increased, all those bad events happened because of Derg misguided “saving the revolution” idea.

Below are comments limited to couple of author’s stories, a) History of the farmers struggle, b) the revolt of the landowners in their own localities.

The History of the farmers struggle:

Interestingly the author started being a high priesthood of academia. On page 15 the author stated no peasants/ farmers movement existed prior the revolution. The Bale’s province farmer movement was done by outside conspirators and the Gojjam farmer’s movements were insignificant. He further stated that the resistance of the farmers were exaggerated and used by individual they call themselves progressive. One can observe he did not bother to research it, he prefers to undermine and demonize the farmers protest. It is well known fact in both provinces as Emperor imposed new tax reform in 1967. Small or large farmers, ordinary peasant farmers alike rebelled to the new tax reform. Due to these rebellion movements the Emperor was forced to halt the tax reform. Documented studies by researches under Africa Studies Series publication (Ethiopia: Power and Protest, By Dr. G.Tareke) with great detail evidence readily available confirming that peasants resistance exist prior 1974 EC revolution. It is understandable that none of the peasant’s movement was capable of changing the feudal system. This is due to the movements were isolated and they lack of organizational skill to be as insurgent force. However, it is widely believed that the peasant movements contribute as one of the factor to eruption of 1974 EC revolution.

The Revolt of the Landowners in their localities:

The author claims armed rebellious in several localities against Derg was raised due to the new land reform proclamations. This is not really quite true statement. The case of patriot Dejazmatch Kebede Bizunehs ‘ s, that mentioned on page 197, could be an example to illustrate that his revolt is not related to land reform proclamation. Derg never bother to sort out or give credit to Ethiopian patriotic those fought against Italian invasion. Post liberation from Italian occupation some of patriots lived in exile in their own country by the Emperor order due to opposition to his rule. They lived under constant threat by Emperor’s security force. It is widely known that after seeing the atrocious deed of the Italians, Dejazmatch Kebede is one of the patriots fought the invasion to liberate Ethiopia. He has been recognized as war heroes since then. He was a religious person, and had no illusion as to the communist rule real intention and what mean to him and his fellow citizens. It is unreasonably to think when you are not allowed to practice religion, not allowed to have funeral to religious place, not having freedom of movement and other many others oppressive rules used under communist rules, it will trigger anger. Of course, Dejazmatch Kebede hadn’t benefited from Emperor Rule or given a large amount of land for his role against Italian invasion, due to his opposition to the Emperor repressive rule. So, he was not one of the large landowner, as book described him. He might have small land, but he resisted against a communist rule. Derg ordered their soldiers armed with heavy weapons, believing would bring this patriotic man to his knees. As you may guess as patriotic lifestyle he never believed in surrender to his enemy. After fierce fight with Derg’s soldiers he killed himself. Interestingly he was sheltered and protected more than five years by his poor farmers he lived in. Dejazmatch Kebede’s greatness will live on in history book.

The author has an attempt to legitimize Derg dictatorial rule. The search of solutions to root of all internal political conflicts, social, economic breakdown etc. were not dealt with democracy principle. It was dealt by brutal force. They continued to rule through sheer terror. As result, a period of relative peace and stability become a dream for all Ethiopians. The civil war consumed too many lives until Mengistu disgracefully surrender the country to a toxic single ethnic-based TPLF rule, and fled to Zimbabwe with unspecified amount of Ethiopian people’s money.

In very few areas of the book, the author’s statements might possible fill a gap of Derg’s history’s. But for those who passed through Red Terror and went through unbearable pain deserve an honest story, not story of spin. The author was castrated for 20 years for his involvement of the Derg’s crimes. A Prison term supposed to help the convicts to be rehabilitated and be truthful as they return to the society. Unfortunately, in my opinion his book has not reflected that. Fikre Selassie didn’t feel morally responsible for unspeakable violence done to countless displaced or killed people under Derg’s rule. The country they left behind is in much vulnerable state that they have received. At least at this aged stage he is expected to show some remorse. Ethiopia political scene since Derg overthrow the Emperor, has brought the country nothing but miseries, and provided a path for repression and violation of human rights by ethnic blinded zealot.

Ewentu wrote “the search of solutions to root of all internal political conflicts, social, economic breakdown etc. [was] not dealt with [democratic] principle.” There is this misguided idea, especially widespread among Ethiopian diaspora, democracy is a common idea that everybody understands it the same way. That is not true. Democracy in the Western context is free election, a rule of law, a right of the minority from the tyranny of the majority, free press, and individual rights to mention the quintessential. Democracy in communist context is class based. In the name of the workers the elites who have come to power ration democracy to the workers while denying democracy for the ruling class of the past. But democracy for the workers is also, despite the communist elites claim, is just a make-believe. The only significant democracy the workers have had was a free demonstration to wish for the dear leader a life that will never end.

Shame on Mr or Dr. Ewnetu !!!

The author writes the book ( if it calls a book or narration or tireka) in Amharic languages. What is the purpose of your critics to be written in foreign language. Does it give sense? Shambel Fikre selected his own language Amharic to express himself. You are not writing the critics for your dissertation in the higher education institutes members or examiner. First , respect your language to present your idea. Of course, Amharic is a language which is enough to express ourselves. If you remember in the middle of the 1975 EC even some scholars suggested Amharic language to be a medium of instruction in the university and colleges. It was good time every body to say something about what he thinks of that time.

Derg and EPRP have literally destroyed one generation of educated young people in the first 10 years of the bloody revolution. I have heard that this monster (Wogderes) is now living a comfortable life in Addis and is telling about the good ol’ red terror days to anyone who is interested to hear them.

Apparently, it is impossible to heal from extreme delusional disorder. If it weren’t for the bloodthirsty madman Mengestu and the likes of Fikre Selassie Wogderess that painted Ethiopia with innocents human blood, Ethiopians wouldn’t be dealing with the current brutal merciless looters and killers that will do anything for the mighty dollar. One of these days, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ethiopia dismantle by godless and money-worshiper TPLF extremists and hand it to Saudi billionaires. Mark my words!

Who cares about personal opinion? This is not a book review at all, this is what some one feels about a book he read.

The reason for the reappearance of the Derg’s villain, because he believes his era is better than the current regime. That why he shows no regrets.

Ewnetu Seme in his review of the book concludes by stating that: “The author has an attempt to legitimize Derg dictatorial regime. The search of solutions to root of all internal political conflicts, social, economic breakdown etc. were not dealt with democracy(tic) principle.”-lenninst While I leave the review of the book for the others to comment on the above conclusive statements which are absolutely true with some modifications: 1) the Derg regime was a Military Dictatorship, not a mere dictatorship with Socialist ideology, resisted by EPRP to yield to a civilian rule, in which both are struggling to maintain the unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, perhaps under totalitarian/Marxist-Leninist economic model with respect to land reform as a class struggle and land ownership.

The condition was set for panel discussion at that time for smoother transition from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy led by a Prime Minister with a cabinet of Ministers, that would have allowed for a parliamentary democracy, while keeping intact the struggle for the national agenda and land reform possible by means of democratic process/revolution. That scenario was rejected by some factions involved in the panel, allowing the Derg to hold on to its Military Dictatorship, following the execution of those officials, under Marxist-Leninist principle not a democratic principle to stay in power, while advancing the Marxist-Leninist ideology through “Zemecha” in the rural areas and public meetings in the city to brain wash the public in that ideology supported by the elites in MEISON, I presume.

Whereas Derg in its struggle against the ex-liberation fronts, which now formed the TPLF/eprdf regime with ideologies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism and/or and the resistance from EPRP, which stood up against the Derg and the previous regimes, was never the less maintaining the national agenda for unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, congruent with the previous regimes.

With the defeat of the Derg regime by EPLF and ex-liberation fronts the condition was set for the formation of a government with the ideologies of ethnic federal, secessionism and totalitarianism and/or state capitalism along with crony capitalism by TPLF/Political, TPLF/EFFORT, TPLF affiliated enterprises, cadres and foreign corporation, which are engaged in exploitation, political and economic strangle hold of the country’s resources much like the Dutch Boers of South Africa against which the fought for African Nationalism and economic freedom/equality, I presume.

The TPLF/eprdf regime having created a constitution with ethnic agenda, supported by the teletafi parties and loyalist opposition parties now forming a coalition with party alignments and non-independent branches of government (Dr. Negede Gobeze) as a basic tenet of democratic government, devoid of the national agenda for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality to have precedence over ethnic and secessionist rights in addition to having perpetrated humanitarian, economic, political and environmental crises, each of are supported by documents by many individuals. However, human right violation by TPLF/eprdf regime is the only common denominator among the opposition parties, where the pragmatic solution to human right violation does not come about by negotiations but as a result of non-violent uprising for political and economic freedom of the silent majority of Ethiopians, restoration of Ethiopian nationalism, the original provinces, the Original Ethiopian flag, and the Sovereignty of Ethiopia, but not annecdotes about the leaders of Derg or the TPLF/eprdf regime.

I believe the writer is emotionally touched due to the fact PM Fikre Sellassie hold others accountable for the horible mess the country had passed through .
Indeed Derg is unquestionablbly accountable for the atocities of the past , but he was not the only actor. EPRP also had its role which the writer deliberately evaded the issue .
So your comment seems to be not a balanced one but skewed to one extreme side.

Professor Tecola Hagos had pointed out here in Abugida :

“..Ethiopia is very new in the construction of mega dam buildings. Joint ownership of dams and other sovereign assets is a very complex and risky processes. One must learn from the experiences of other states that have traveled down that risky road. Thus, Ethiopia must develop its own expertise and avoid the continued dependence on foreign advisers and experts. This is a task that takes up time, but can be accelerated by mobilizing capable and well qualified Ethiopians in the Diaspora. Even more lacking is old fashioned Ethiopian patriotism and nationalism. I am quite certain about the extent of my own commitment to Ethiopia, I am not sure that I see the type of patriotic commitment in most of the political leaders both in the Diaspora or back home in Ethiopia. What I witnessed so far is divisive and ethnic based fractured leadership that is eating the very core of our continued survival…” We hope that is done.

    He also pointed out that:
“..One serious problem facing Ethiopia, which is in the background of most conflicts that threaten the survival of Ethiopia, is the military assistance of the United States to Egypt to the tune of a couple of billion dollars every year for the last two decades…]] Is that changing?

And asks “..Why is the United States always undermining Ethiopia’s interest at crucial moments in our history for the last one hundred years of relationship with the United States?..”

Are we better off under Obama?

One assumes Ethiopia have learned lessons (if it was a mistake to begin with!) from the Algiers Agreement and The Boundary commission regarding dispute settlements.

Thank you for shading a light on Derg’s inaccurate account of the history of Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the former PM has not had the intellectual capacity to respect history. Time in prison has not given him the ability to reflect, grow and mature so that he can come to terms of the wrong doings that he, Mengistu and Derg committed to Ethiopia during the time.

All I can say is: the book has given me the ‘fire in the belly” to write a book about my father, Degazmach Kebede and other patriots, men and women, young and old, who gave their life to their country. Those that stood for the poor and voiceless. More to come.

What is the big-picture, the big-game and the end-game behind revolution and wars globally? To wisely understand this we need to understand different layers of truth and different domains of truth. And based on this approach well we can put the so called the then hyped “Revolution” of the Derg regime in some sort of intermediary transition layer of truth and domains of truth that serves as a means for a certain another end-game. Well revolution in what sense? I mean even related to remembering the recently hyped Arab-Spring revolution or that of the oldest French-Revolution. Who are the real losers and who are the real winners in revolution, i.e. based on the Elites-Vs-Mass? Can we think revolution without the essence of social-fabric, class-consciousness and class-struggle? What is the current general situation in Ethiopia after that sort of bloody and messy revolution? For me the term Revolution is such a very confusing vague word that needs further proper scrutiny? Like the so called Left-Vs-Right party politics paradigm setup (but something that belongs to the two wings of the same bird) like wise revolution is usually a crafty theatrical game of script written or designed by the global masters but played by their pawn politicians(Left Vs Right). So why was fellow Ethiopians massacred each other under the disguise of revolution? For me real revolution is the rising of human-consciousness and hence the attainment of human-dignity and integrity. If that was real revolution then how comes we happen to plunge ourselves in to such tragic quandary and agony of our times under TPLF?I think that so called hyped revolution of the Derg time was some thing of an intermediary stepping stone insidiously maneuvered to pave the way for the current situation of this historical nation. For me one of the main motives of the then hyped revolution was fostering elitist rivalry among fellow Ethiopians which serves as the main insidious scheme and instrument of Global Masters to destabilize, weaken and destroy a certain strong sovereign Nation-State. The then monarchical rule was somehow successful in maintaining the sovereignty of the nation after two successive colonial invasion of Italy to the extent of becoming the main seat of African Union, which is an indication that Ethiopia some how managed to survive colonial invasion and then become beacon of African freedom and African Unity. This has to be some how insidiously crushed by destroying the Monarchy which was the symbol of unity and territorial integrity of the nation. So the role of the Derg, knowingly or unknowingly as a pawn of Western powers was to carry out this task. Then Derg paved the way for TPLF/EPLF. At this moment of time in history that is why we find ourselves by being gradually doomed to lose two things, both democracy and our Nation-Statehood integrity and identity. We have to know that we can not simply become a democracy overnight just because we wish it or we just naively and gullibly inculcate it.

Another concluding statement from Ewnetu Seme states: ” Ethiopia(‘s) political scene since Derg overthrow the Emperor, (HIM Emperor Haile sellasie) has brought the country nothing but miseries, and provided a path for repression and violation of human rights by ethnic blinded zealot”. Again I may agree with this statement with some modifications. Derg being a committee of Military Officers with Marxist-Leninist ideology, but nevertheless intent on the national agenda fighting the Liberation Fronts: EPLF, TPLF, etc. overthrew HIM’s regime with support of the revolutionary student movements: MEISON, EPRP etc. with Derg as the spear head of that movement but not alone, I presume. The trouble of Derg with EPRP came about when Derg did not yield to civilian rule, while MEISON was going along with Derg regime, so I presume retrospectively. That scenario would have lingered on if the Derg regime had defeated EPLF, TPLF and the other liberation fronts, which also left EPRP to be hit right and left by the Derg regime as well as by TPLF/eprdf regime of ex-liberation fronts that caused human rights violations of greater proportions by both sides, because of the absence of democratic principles on both or all sides to settle a disputes in the Ethiopian Culture, but only force as the ultimate solution. Derg did not “provide a path to repression and violation of human rights by ethnic blinded zealot”, but lost the battle against unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians to what you called ethnic blinded zealot to what I label as constitution based on the ideologies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism and/or state capitalism, which leaves Ethiopians in a struggle between Ethiopian Nationalism and Ethnic federalism and/or Ethnic secessionism/Ethnic Nationalism. To those paradigms are included OPDo/EFDF/Medrek/fdre, and ALIJE+OLF/ Ginbot-7/AFD2 as supporters of the ideologies in the constitution.

Fikre Selassie Wogderess was a very strong supporter and a member of inner clique of the mengistu faction. The other members of Mengistu’s right hand men being Birhanu Baye,Legese Asfaw, Fesiha Desta, the derg defence minister Tesfaye Gebremedihin.

I don’t claim to have read Fekire Selassie’s book nor do I believe I will. However,it is fitting to say Fikre selassie like his comrades seized state power claiming as representative of the the then Ethiopian Armed Forces.Once at the helm, the 120 derg members start to deceive the public stating after the establishment of provissional people’s government they will return to their camp. The crux of the issue is this: the 120 members of the Derg( who refferred themselves as ‘Lewte hawarayats’ have never been represented by the people. It was not the will of the Ethiopian peoplethat the low ranking derg members to take state control and excute all educated and capable deplomats and high ranking Army officers.Fikreselassie can not scape justice that is due to him by saying he was not present when the officials were killed

The bottom line is the mengistu clique has been intosticated about personal power and nothing else. To begin with Fikreselassie cannot have the morale ground to produce a book that purports to teach the truth about Ethiopia under derg. What about this? Has he not been in the country when his clique gun down General Teferi Banti, Atnafu Abate, Capitain Habte and a host of concerned officers who want to return to camp or share power with the civilian? Fekre Selassie and his comrades far being “Lewte Hawariat” as they claimed, were endeed agents of destruction for that poor nation. The travesty of it is that he is in the company of TPLfits perhaps because of some favor for its accession to power.
