Hailemariam Desalegn Humiliated By Abebe Gellaw

(AV) Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn faced a stinging humiliation as Azusa Pacific University (APU), whose motto is “God First”, has withdrawn an honor it had already bestowed on him. The university administration had to reverse its decision to honor Mr. Desalegn in light of gross human rights violations in Ethiopia being perpetrated by the regime he serves.

The administration of the American evangelical university made the decision in an emergency meeting last Friday after this reporter raised a number of critical questions on whether honoring a human rights violator was consistent with APU’s core values and motto. The Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE) also wrote a letter highlighting gross human rights violations being perpetrated by Mr. Desalegn and the TPLF-led regime he is serving.

The honoring ceremony, which was slated for July 31 at the university’s Los Angeles campus, was expected to be attended by the PM and his family, foreign diplomats, the university faculty, senior U.S. and Ethiopian government officials including Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom and other ministers.

Rachel White, APU’s Assistant Director of External Relations, confirmed exclusively to this reporter that the university has withdrawn the honor and cancelled the ceremony which was planned to honor him at APU’s Los Angeles campus.

“I can confirm that the event has been cancelled. The university evaluated current developments in Ethiopia including the latest U.S State Department Human Rights Report,” she said. She also indicated that the recent high court decision to file terrorism charges against Zone9 bloggers and journalists was also one of the factors considered for the cancellation of the event to honor Mr. Desalegn.

“Nothing is as important as our motto God First. Any decisions we make have to be consistent with our motto and core values,” White noted. She also pointed out that respect for human rights are very important for the university. It is now confirmed that he cancelled his trip to Los Angeles after the university communicated to him its decision to cancel the honoring ceremony.

According to a university source, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to give a statement on behalf of the university, APU’s administration unanimously agreed to withdraw the honor for Mr.Desalegn, whom it found to be an unsuitable honoree after evaluating not only the disturbing human rights situation in Ethiopia but also the potential negative publicity that the event was likely to generate. “It was a wise and timely decision, as the university was likely to face backlash if it publicly honored a human rights violator,” the source said.

Exiled journalist Serkalem Fasil, who was forced to give birth in jail, commended the university for correcting its mistake in good time. “I think this university did not know who Hailemariam Desalegn was. They should have known that Ethiopian government officials like him do not deserve honor but facing justice for the crimes they are committing against humanity.

Serkalem said Azusa Pacific corrected its mistake in an exemplary manner. “I am glad the university listened to the truth and its God First motto,” she said. Her husband, the award-winning journalist Eskinder Nega, is serving an 18-year sentence in Ethiopia after he and a number of journalists and activists were labelled “terrorists” by a Kangaroo court.

Abebe Belew, a Washington D.C.-based activist and community radio broadcaster, who was also convicted of “terrorism” offenses because of his critical views towards the repressive policies of the Ethiopian government, also praised the university for its decisive measure.

“This university is a truly Christian university. It made a bad decision but realized soon enough that honoring an ungodly human rights violator contradicted its Christian values. I appreciate the university’s administration for taking such a strong stand based on its God First motto,” he said.

“Hailemariam should also learn from the humiliating experience. He pretends to be a protestant Christian but what he is doing completely contradicts all the tenets of the bible.

“As APU has clearly demonstrated, he doesn’t deserve any honor as a human rights violator destroying the lives of so many people. I hope he and and members of this oppressive tyranny will face trial sooner rather than later. That is the kind of honor they really deserve,” Abebe added.

Azusa Pacific canceled the libertarian scholar Charles Murray last April; APU president said the campus was not yet “ready” to hear what Murray had to say.

If they did the same to HD we know it is not their first time kowtowing to pressure. One wonders why they invite these people to begin with. Are you telling me they were an aware of Ethiopia’s controversial human rights issue or who the PM was in the first place as Serkalem pointed out?

You have got to be kidding me on that. I think they are just cowards who back off when they were pushed back… They probably allow Iraq “war criminals” make speeches all day in their campuses and Abebe or freinds wouldn’t say anything about it either. BTW, the title says Abebe Gelaw but the one they quoted was Abebe Belew? One is a journalist the other an artist. Which one is it?

Not that it matters but I was just wondering.
And how did they humiliate HD if I may ask? I think APU humiliated itself.

The Oromo’s future is given HIV/AIDS infection by Muktar Kedir. Eventhough the government claims to shave the heads of these abducted Oromos for hygeine purposes , the recent information that leaked from within Muktar Kedir’s office shows the barbers were instructed to infect HIV/AIDS to Over 30,000 Oromos that were recently abducted and sent to Concentration Camps . The Hailemariam Desalegn(Muktar Kedir) government said the only crime the Oromos commited was lieing down on sidewalks. For the crime of lieing down on side walks the government chose to infect them with HIV while shaving them with infected dull blades. . Muktar kedir is taking away food farmers land and turning it into Khat farms all over Oromia. His drug dealing ring was caught while trying to smuggle Khat illegally into China recently. hailemariam desalegn is saying Muktar Kedir is a strong man when he appointed him the President Of Oromia region in February 2014. Hailemariam’s strong man confiscated highly mechanized and other farm lands from Oromia and turned it into a camp where Khat addiction rules. His plan is to make the oromo work for Khat , send the Khat worldwide illegally and join the billionaires of Ethiopia overnight. They are relying on foreign aid to feed the people that is why he is snatching food farmers land and giving it to his family and friends. Those that opposed his plan are being sent to hell ,that is Hailemariam Desalegn’s choice of ‘STRONG MAN.”

Like any other servants of the racist and fascist rule of the TPLF, ato Haile Mariam does not have conscience to feel ashamed and humiliated. He is accustomed to the racist and debasing treatments of his TPLF bosses which are more shameful and humiliating.

    Abebe Gellaw
Hailemariam Deselagne is quoting Holy Rite with evidence embarrassment his master,Meles/Legesse Zenawi. I am afraid he is not plagiarist. Nor he transgressed the copy right of the widow, Azeb Mesfin. For he is a clone of imp combine with TPLF. Cheers.

First, Hailemariam Desalegn was thoroughly brainwashed not by high ranking Hiwahat cadres, but with low-level cadres; then, he was made and shaped into a low-intelligence submissive cadre and was simply named prime minster.

In short, and simple words, Hailemariam Desalegn is a man with no of his own mind, by virtue of his own choice he just has become a prisoner of his choice and desire. The Hiwhat, masters of his have yet provided him with a bicycle, but they changed him into a messanger with a generous pay annually on top of the surprise money that has been deposited into his overseas and domestic banks.

While focusing on looted money that has been going straight into his account, this useless man overlooked and ignored what his fate would meet him at the end of the rule of his masters.

As I mentioned before Azusa Pacific canceled the libertarian scholar Charles Murray last April; The scholar wrote the students a letter saying why the “Azusa Pacific’s administration wants to protect you from earnest and nerdy old guys who have opinions that some of your faculty do not share … Ask if this is why you’re getting a college education”.

HD do not have a liberation struggle baggage; he is a next generation leader of EPRDF and relatively new to the position; if Abebe or Azusa Pacific are sincere in helping bring changes in a developing country like ours, there is no reason to circumvent or cancel such outside exposure and engagement that probably help empower the man to take possibly more risks for himself in the direction of improving human rights issues back home. That is a sure area where he has a chance of building a legacy for himself.

It is a missed opportunity for Abebe & others who could have asked pointed questions. Off course, HD would have given them “an unequivocal answer”. :-)

The thing is the man probably speaks several other languages. The joke is may be on the one who compares him with native English speaking leaders that are possibly incapable of daring to make a speech or give a full interview in other than the English language.

I am very sorry for Azusa Pacific for canceling the event. They needed to know more about the PM before the announcement. He is a great man of integrity and love of God. I am very proud of him and I pray the enemy of our country to get what they deserve. The work with the enemy of our country the Eritrean leader, he is the one who is abusing his people.
Long live Ethiopia and our leaders.
