Hailemariam’s fake “top 10 educated” list falls apart By Abebe Gellaw

January 5th, 2015 Print Print Email Email

The official website of India TV that had published a dubious online ranking two weeks ago that it claimed to be a list of the “top 10 most educated politicians in the world” has retracted the story.

Indiantvnews.com has now pulled back the “top 10” story and changed the title saying the random list was just intended to highlight the educational backgrounds of 10 leaders from around the world without any sort of ranking.

In response to an email inquiry challenging the authenticity of the original list that contradicts publicly available facts, Anushrav Gulati, an editor with the website, acknowledged mistakes in the confusing ranking. “The list was not intended to be any sort of ranking of politicians on the basis of their educational qualifications, but, on the other hand, is merely intended to highlight the educational backgrounds of ten persons,” the editor explained.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn was erroneously included in the list despite the fact that he and some of those ranked as being “most educated” turned out to be less educated than so many leaders who were not included in the list. Many leaders with PhD degrees and an impressive list of advanced academic credentials were not included while others with first degrees like Putin were listed among the “most educated politicians.”

Gulati blamed the mishap on the title which originally claimed to be a “top 10” ranking. “You are, perhaps, justified in pointing out that the title of the news item in question could be said to generate some amount of confusion. We have modified the title to reflect the true intention behind the list as being one highlighting the educational backgrounds of 10 leaders from around the world.”

Hailemariam Desalegn was ranked as the 4th most educated politician in the world. However, it was highlighted to the website that he was not the most “educated politician in Ethiopia, let alone in the world.” In Ethiopia, a country whose literacy rate is one of the lowest in the world, there are several academics and scholars in politics who hold PhD degrees. It is, however, widely believed that educational qualification is less important in politics than other attributes such as humility, honesty, leadership, selflessness and the ability to inspire and empower others. TPLF’s puppet Hailemariam Desalegn is more known for his naked opportunism than his political acumen and leadership qualities.

Indiantvnews.com had ranked U.S. President Barack Obama, who got a B.A degree from Columbia University and J.D. from Harvard Law School, as the foremost educated leader in the world. Although Obama is arguably one of the most outstanding politicians in the world, he is not among the “most educated” politicians in the word.

If educational credentials matter to rank politicians, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe can claim the gold medal. The 90-year old dictator has amassed 8 degrees in various fields, without counting nearly 20 honorary degrees he received from universities around the world. After qualifying as a teacher, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Fort Hare in 1951. He received six more degrees including a Bachelor of Administration and Bachelor of Education from the University of South Africa. Then he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Laws, Master of Science, and Master of Laws, all from the University of London. He earned the two Law degrees while he was in prison. He got a the Master of Science degree while he was Prime Minister of Zimbabwe (1980-1987).

According to his biography, Hailemariam was born in 1965. In the same year, current Malawian President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika,74, got a law degree from the University of London. The distinguished scholar received LL.M in 1966 and a doctorate degree in law in 1969 from Yale University. Then he became a professor and taught at University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Haile Selassie University (Ethiopia), Rutgers University (USA), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research Program for Foreign Service Officers from Africa and Asia at Makerere University (Uganda), and for 39 years at Washington University (USA).

Prof. Mutharika was democratically elected as President of Malawi defeating Joyce Banda in the general elections held on May 20, 2014.The Indian website that did not even mention Mugabe or Mutharika, among many others such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel (PhD, Physics), Chinese President Xi Jinping (PhD, Law), and Belgian PM Elio Di Rupo (PhD, Chemistry) seemed to be oblivious of the facts when it compiled its random “top 10” most educated politicians list.

Other African leaders that have advanced degrees include Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan (PhD in Zoology), President Yayi Boni of Benin (PhD in Economics) and the outgoing Prime Minister of Mauritius Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, who was a distinguished medical doctor with numerous academic and professional credentials. It appeared Surbhi Gloria Singh, the reporter who compiled the list failed to do her homework well enough.

TPLF army of cadres distributed the bogus “top 10” list online without checking publicly available facts. Hailemariam, who lacks depth and communication skills, is probably the only Prime Minister in the world who is given a title with little power and influence while TPLF bigwigs command legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.

We are proud of Abebe Gelaw. HD is a naive politician. He does not know any thing about politics and administration; he may okay in civil engineering equations and drawings; but nothing else. No knowledge of political economy, history, geography, English, communication, etc; in general he acts like a computer; can only do the program he is loaded – Meles’ ra-ey.

You are saying the title was changed to “10 among the more qualified world leaders”. So what?

The man was still acknowledged as one of the more qualified putting him in the Ranks of super power leaders such as Obama and Putin. Right? What is the problem with that?

[[..Hailemariam, who lacks depth and communication skills.. is probably the only Prime Minister in the world who is given a title with little power and influence.... while TPLF bigwigs...]]

    Depth in what?

Wait a minute! If you are thinking of what you scribbled in the past of him not being great in “communicating” in one of the several languages he speaks”. Please – save it!

As far as “little power” goes, the following is the answer given to what the traits of the most successful leaders is” by Archie Brown, an emeritus professor of politics at Oxford University who wrote [ The Myth of the Strong Leader: Political Leadership in the Modern Age.]

“I simply think that the strong-weak dichotomy is a very misleading way of looking at it. There are many qualities desirable in a leader that should matter more than the criterion of strength, which is better suited for judging weight lifters or long-distance runners. These include integrity, intelligence, articulateness, collegiality, sharp judgment, a questioning mind, willingness to seek disparate views, ability to absorb information, flexibility, good memory, courage, vision, empathy and boundless energy. That list is incomplete. No leader is likely to embody all those qualities, and they shouldn’t claim to, but there are many other qualities apart from strength which should be used.”

HD has most of the above.

What is the point of all of this? Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is mentioned in an obscure Indian website, and Ethiopian opposition is going nuts. Don’t you have anything positive to do? Don’t you have friends and family that can keep you busy? By the way, what are the educational credentials of Tamagn Beyene and Abebe Gelaw?
Most of our parents never attended a university, but they have managed to raise us and they did not need a degree to prove their ability to lead a family and manage a descent life.

Dawi is in defense of HD because he thinks that HD is the perfect man for manipulation by TPLF. I do not believe that Dawi is convinced of HD’s ability. The TPLF itself is fade up of HD’s shallowness and lack of coherent communication skills. Any one trained in Dedebit in Albanian communism should perform better than HD.

What is surprising is that the comment given by a person trying to weigh the academic excellence of an individual who has no formal education. Well it is surprising the intellectuals of Ethiopia are the like of Lezza biss Tamegnge now you. You do not have even a formal education other than Kess Timheret bet and now you are evaluating the academic excellence of one of Ethiopian academician? That will be a farce. Tell me which Ethiopian University you studied and what is your academic achievement. Do not tell me your correspondence or your course auditing in one of the foreign college you got by affirmative action.

Just to remind you the prime minister of Ethiopia is a Gold Medalist graduate of Addis Ababa University Technology Faculty of Addis Ababa University in Civil Engineering. Yes you heard me Addis Ababa University where the brightest of Ethiopia study. I happen to be lecturing in that institution and I know what it takes to succeed in those schools.
Please save us from your blabber and do not try to measure someone’s academic achievement with an illiterate measuring yard stick. Try to do good and be constructive.

You might as well spared some time by replacing you list for one word: your ideal leader has to be Perfect.

The problem with HD is he lakes conviction, and integrity. Above all, I don’t see him with burning desire to be a person of himself. I don’t care what quality a person may have if he is not himself I have no respect to that one. Period!

The sad part about him is he says something he himself does not believe. For instance, he once said “God has brought me for such a time as this.” Judging by his current speech regarding our society his speech makes me to laugh at.

The argumments of the weyanne or Hodam using the alias Dawi are absurd as usual. I urge `Dawi`to use his real name if he means what he says or writes here. The central issue or argument is that ato Hailemariam Desalegn does not wield any power. He is the puppet being abused by his TPLF bosses who drive him from behind. If a person or even machine is driven from behind,it is dangerous or risky. The discussion is not about weak or strong leaders as `Dawi`tries to twist. The TPLF does not allow or pick up strong and self confident persons from its appendage and surrogate ethnic organizations. Ato HD belongs to one of these from the south and has a good track record of loyality and servility to his late Meles and the TPLF masters. The most important criterion the TPLF uses to promote its puppets is accepting and obeying its master-slave rules and politics. Ato HD has excelled in this politics and qualified for the nominal position as a premier now and vice-premier earlier as his track records show. His poverty in offcial communication and efforts to imitate his late master Zenawi, are all embarassing. So Dawi and co.should stop their filthy arguments and promotions of HD. We know the force controlling Ethiopia and driving from behind the reckless Hodams like HD.

HD is even incompetent in his own area of expertise. It is clear that hydro-power is far cheaper than wind sources of power generatio. Instead of damming rivers, he opted to trying to get electric power from winds which is very costly and unreliable.

HD approves foreign contracts in the construction sector, one of the major reason that drives local inflation rate very high. Local contractors are now copying prices set by foreign companies. For example in real estate sector, companies now quote their prices in US dollars, and very expensive for the society there too. On top of that, when ever the government adjusts the exchange rate these companies’ housing prices immediately jumps high in birr. This practice is now being copied in many sectors of the economy leading to very unstable domestic prices. What HD has to do should only be employing foreign expats and get the work done using Ethiopian project structures. This style of project execution has been tested during the King’s time as well as during the Derg time which was proven effective. The price of roads is now 25 million per kilometer as opposed to 1 million per kilometer during the Derg’s time. I myself has been on one of such projects and Ethiopians are capable of handling their affairs. All they need is some advice ad expat assistance. The country’s limited resources are being misused by very inflated cost due to unwise approach. SO HD is a failure in his own field (construction), in politics, administration and everything.

If we replace the two terms in the above extremist view, the “He” and “TPLF”, with “Obama” and “Democrats or Republicans”, one may see the weakness of Adem’s argument in a different prism.

I say, with all the drawback of Obama being Black,African or Mixed race, he has accomplished a lot. If you want me to elaborate I am willing to do that.

Having said that, don’t just sit here and make a mountain out of a molehill. When [the developmental state'] has done its job it will undermine ethnic organizations like TPLF to be replaced by a social democratic or liberal democratic coalitions. IMO, HD is playing that historical leadership role at this moment.

So what? Why do you waste my precious internet reading time about the scholastic achievement of HD. Come on, you should give him credit for his accentless and fluent Amharic. As matter of fact, HD is far better than the Debtera who had thought me Amharic in AAU, even better than the late Aklilu Hapte Wald’s French accented-Amharic. As a matter of principal I am more interested and have respect for his thought, not the third-rate degree that he got. I flee from shallow air-head PhD. Stanford.

It was a celebration for elements in the enemy camp, but was a fleeting one. It was proofed beyond any doubt that this chap called Hailemariam Desalegn indeed was nothing worth than cow manure, then came the anger of losers in the enemy camp upon learning everybody in the camp and themselves were busted before the very fact that manifested in the truth that has been existing for long. Well, it is fact; God created this that has become an embarrassment to all, but his own owners made him cheaply to their personal taste and desire put him up on the market with fake personal brand which soon was found to be cheap and useless.

Today, it is extremely hard to find any Ethiopians both inside and outside Ethiopia who have not deeply shamed and pissed of the goof who claimed representing Ethiopians. This empty skull humongous boy has no buyers at all in this competitive market.

Abegaz – HD is not Mengistu, an “authoritarian” that micro manages all economic policies of the country; at least not quite yet! :-)

The policies you talk about are decided in the GTP or 5-10 yrs plans. The next 10 – 15 years development plan was set before the present PM therefore, they may tweak it here and there other than that, the new generation leaders like HD just manage implementing the “vision” period.

Wind and thermal energy are other power sources you need to harness so that you don’t put all your eggs in one basket. These are standard recommendation by experts.

On the other hand, your following advice, if it has any merit should be looked at by the PM and other appropriate decision makers.

    1. This article has been presented by Abebe Gelaw and not Tamagn. So you missed the point. Abebe Gelaw is a qualified person with a post graduate degree from Stanford university. He is also unparalleled in journalism skills and ethics from Ethiopians of similar profession. He is a world class journalist. Go ask VOA chief how he put them in to shame by picking their mistakes convincingly.

    2. Tamagn is a famous artist. He may not have gone to the university of your imagination. But he is born talented. He can make analysis like and veteran professor in any matter except HD’s mathematical equations. He will put HD to shame on the political affairs of Ethiopia. Tamagn is also a true Ethiopian diplomat. Tamgn is now the people’s man. He is not even living for his family.

    3. You indicated HD is a gold medalist from AAU. Well I got a dear friend who graduated with 3.8 in electrical engineering (the toughest subject in Technology Faculty of AAU. But my friend is the most naive person when it comes to politics, management, economics, psychology, history, geography and communication. Look how the cost of road construction, housing, etc sky rocketing because of lack of economic leadership. Look, in Addis Ababa the city is expanding but no new high school, elementary school, middle school are being built. Tell me the name of new public schools between Megenagna and Ayat? Haile Selassie was himself the minister of Education to make sure there are schools and Ethiopian children attend. He had no degree even like HD. Look Addis Ababa roads and commuities; no side walks along roads, no parks. They just pile cement and concrete. No sewerage system and no public sanitation facilities for an African capital. Mind you, HD’s MSc is in Sanitation Engineering.

    Abegaz,

Thank you for your comment and now we are talking. Instead of name calling where ever we are if we, discuss the issue of our people and contribute in our own way, will be the way to go.

You seem to know a lot of things happening in Addis either you live there or have connection. Let us talk about education, I am not giving the credit to the Prime Minister but for his ruling party leadership and the emphasis given by the government. It has no parallel not in Africa or any nation in the world. Ethiopia allocate the highest budget for Education and no wonder Ethiopia has more than 33 public universities and 10 more are on the pipeline. There are at any time more than 500,000 Ethiopian students attending these universities and this is heartwarming. The quality of education may not be up to the snuff but you have to start from something. Sometime ago Jimma university medical students were shunned by Addis Medical faculty and even some want it to close. Look now the graduate of this school practice medicine even in USA. Having said that if there is no new public high school in Ayat area is not a neglect, even the Mayor of Addis or the what you call the Kifle Ketema should fix this. As a matter of fact if we really talk about it there are a lot of private schools that can cover that affluent area and the government priority should be to open public schools in the rural area specially places where there are no schools. I think that is what is happening.

Regarding the construction cost I agree with you the cost has to be controlled and this is not because of the Prime Minister the Meskel Bole road was so expensive and was rejected by the late prime minister, after the delay has to accept the price quote and built it. They should do due diligence to arrest the rise of the cost and in fact it not bad. To build the Sebetta Dewelle rail way is about ~ 3 Bln USD and in Kenya half of this railway track their quote was ~ 5 bln. This does not mean there is no room to lower the cost and that has to be done.

By the way I do not know anyone in the current government but from the news on the internet you can find that the director of ERA was let go due to the sky rocketing of construction cost.
I am not defending anyone but let us point the issues to be addressed as you pointed and give credit when it is due and we all want the better Ethiopia.

    Thanks

Mr. Dawi`s drawing of parallels between the Democratic party and president Obama on one side and the TPLF and the puppet ato Hailemariam Desalegn on the other is irraational and baseless. This demonstrates that Dawi is as irrational as the other blind followers and supporters of the TPLF ethnical fascists. Dawi is also trying in vain to sell the falsehood of his TPLF paymasters (the developmental state). The developmental state of the TPLF is not even putting bread on our tables. We are struggling even to eat once in this developmenrtal state. But Dawi and his likes are leading luxurious and extravagant lives spending thousands per day enjoying expensive drinks in the most expensive hotels in the country. The hardships and hunger we are experiencing in our daily lives in Ethiopia speak volumes against the lies of Dawi and co.

    Dawi,

How can a person like you miss the merits of using local expertise to keep cost competitive? If you bring an American company to build bridges and roads, it is going to quote you an American cost standard. If you see all construction projects in Ethiopia, they are awarded to foreign companies. This will not encourage local industry to grow and it will also drive cost to high level. This is one source of inflation. Even local companies are going to copy this price in future and it becomes very difficult to manage project costs. Price has to go, as much as possible, hand in hand with the local peoples’ capacity. More than this, Ethiopia had this experience and was found to be effective. We have to build on what we are strong.

Again when I talk of wind Power, it is about prioritizing our tasks with the limited funds we have for the period we are in.

It is documented that “This was deliberate policy, quite consciously borrowed from Singapore (and to a lesser extent, South Korea, Malaysia, even Taiwan) beginning in the very early 1980s as part of a “Neo-Authoritarian” or “Soft Authoritarian” developmental model that many Chinese political elites believed was to be credited for the rapid rise of the Asian Tigers.”

“..Deng sought to replace the “Reds” (i.e., people in power whose positions derived from ideological purity or good (worker, peasant) class background) with the “Experts”–often, Soviet-trained scientists and engineers who had enjoyed a brief ascendancy during the period of Mao’s eclipse from 1961 to 1965. He purged the Party of Reds and actually laid out quotas, calling for X percent college-educated cadres by such-and-such a date. During the 1980s, many Chinese intellectuals embraced the technocratic idea, including many scientists and social scientists who would, by decade’s end, emerge as very prominent critics of the Chinese Communist Party, like the dissident astrophysicist Fang Lizhi, one of the “black hands” who the Party vilified as puppet-master of the 1989 student-led protests. More typical perhaps was the late Qian Xuesen, an MIT-educated rocket scientist who returned to his native China to head the Chinese rocketry program. An avid supporter of technocracy, Qian even said that he believed governments should be run essentially like an engineering department. The notion that economic, social, and even fundamentally political problems could be approached with an engineer’s problem-solving mentality seemed somehow to resonate in China, and was largely unchallenged…”

    This is for Dawi,

Since you like to brig intellectual argument for the developmental state, I just posted this link for your thought. It shows an effort by EPRDF to eliminate the UDJ.

What the hell is EPRDF doing by going so cheap like that? How can a government that does reckless things control its members from corruption. Corruption is a downturn of morality. If members perceive from EPRDF that it is okay to be immoral, I do not see why they cannot steal from the public resources. The Ethiopian values are to be badly eroded forever.

Instead of doing cheap things, I would recommend EPRDF to disband UDJ and all other parties. Better to follow the Chinese way. By doing this it only makes ideological change. At least it won’t send a bad precedent to its members in moral terms.

Hatred breeds hatred. It has been almost 25 years since the current regime took he saddle of Administration of Ethiopia. During this tyrannical time I have witnessed the opposition groups being fragmented to benefit the EPRDF-TPLF. I am not and do not intend to be a student of politics. But those who engage in political activities do more talking than practically trying to solve the ongoing political malaise of the country. I do not know the current regime and I vehemently despise its tribal or in a better word ethnical divisive and dictatorial politics. It amazes me that it marches on cruel repressive dictatorial journey which it had been opposing and had struggled for. It is saddening that the struggle which thousands of Ethiopians sacrificed their lives became the means to enrich handful individuals and oppressing the vast majority of Ethiopians. On contrary there is something positive being done in improvement of the infrastructure of the country. Credit should be given where credit is due. It will be anathema to truthfulness if we deny that fact. Do I care whether HD had a degree or not? Who said that a person with Harvard or MIT or Oxford PhD can be a good leader? We do not have to forget that there are a lot of derelict intellectuals around the world who cannot lead their private lifves, let alone a country. I prefer a leader with less education but lot of humility, caring, truthfulness, justice, humanity, selflessness, and love of people. A leader who can have morality, and stand against oppression, abuse of power, and who can value the life of any person as his own life. Arguing on piece of garbage posted online indicates how the supporters of this self-serving regime in Finfine and the ever-opposing individuals are in-arms against each other. I do not hold against HD his lack of PhD or not graduating from world famous University. I hold him accountable for his lack of Courage and Conviction to stand up against injustice and inequality. I hold the supporters of the regime accountable for their continuous denial of the truth and defending the indefensible dictatorial actions of the regime. I blame those opposing individuals for their continuous lies of defaming the regime rather than pointing out the good deeds of the regime while criticizing for lack of democratic rights of the people. Life is not black and white. It will be nice to speak the TRUTH about our enemies when we spill their sins.
