The United States’ irresponsible praise of Ethiopia’s regime. Washington post

May 1st, 2015 Print Print Email Email

ETHIOPIA’S ELECTIONS, scheduled for May 24, are shaping up to be anything but democratic. A country that has often been held up as a poster child for development has been stifling civic freedoms and systematically cracking down on independent journalism for several years.

It was consequently startling to hear the State Department’s undersecretary of state for political affairs, Wendy Sherman, declare during a visit to Addis Ababa on April 16 that “Ethiopia is a democracy that is moving forward in an election that we expect to be free, fair and credible.” The ensuing backlash from Ethiopians and human rights advocates was deserved.

Ms. Sherman’s lavish praise was particularly unjustified given Ethiopia’s record on press freedom: It has imprisoned 19 journalists, more than any other country in Africa. According to a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the country ranks fourth on its list of the top 10 most censored countries in the world. At least 16 journalists have been forced into exile, and a number of independent publications have shut down due to official pressure.

Last weekend marked one year since six bloggers were arrested and jailed without trial. The “Zone 9” bloggers, who used their online platforms to write about human rights and social justice and to agitate for a democracy in Ethiopia, were charged with terrorism under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation, which has been used to clamp down on numerous journalists critical of the regime. Today, the bloggers remain imprisoned, awaiting what will likely be a trial by farce.

As for the elections, opposition parties say the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front , led by Hailemariam Desalegn, has undermined their efforts to register candidates for the May vote. Since last year, members of opposition parties and their supporters have been arrested and harassed. In March, the sole opposition leader in Parliament said he would not run for reelection due to state interference with his party’s affairs. The EPRDF, which has been in power since 1991, was reported to have won the last elections in 2010 with 99.6 percent of the vote.

The State Department released a statement last week urging Ethiopia to release journalists who have been imprisoned for doing their jobs. But as the considerably more high-profile statement by Ms. Sherman indicated, the Obama administration has been reluctant to criticize what it regards as a key security ally in the Horn of Africa. A State Department spokeswoman confirmed this week that Ms. Sherman’s comments “fully reflect the U.S. government’s positions on these issues.”

With its ancient culture, strategic location and population of 94 million, Ethiopia is indeed key to the future of eastern Africa. But that does not justify make-believe statements or a go-softly approach that is not working. The United States should stop funneling millions of aid dollars to a regime that has continued to choke off the media, hamper the participation of opposition parties and silence its critics. If the election is not judged by independent observers to live up to Ms. Sherman’s billing, the administration should swallow her words — and change its approach.

The Ethiopian Government, which is a conglomerate of ex-liberation fronts has been bestowed to advance democracy, which a rule by the people, for the people and of the people, because of the ideologies of “System of political ethnicity”, ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism and /or state capitalism built into the constitution, denying individual freedom, liberty and equality before the Supreme Law of the Land, which reneges on press freedom, freedom of assembly based on national agenda rather than ethnic agenda with party alignments along ethnic lines, advancing ethnic rule and/or ethnic dictatorship than democratic rule, which is “shaping up anything but democratic” in terms of May 24 elections in the face of confrontations between Ethiopian Nationalism and “system of political ethnicity” ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism and/or state capitalism that denies free market capitalism at least in terms of private ownership of land anywhere in Ethiopia so as make them feel this land is my land from East to West and North to South, as well as individual freedom to super cede ethnic and secessionist rights in order to have individual rights to hold front and center as bases for democracy. Under the current frame work of the constitution, democracy can not be superimposed over ethnic rule/ethnic dictatorship of either minority or majority ethnic rule. That was a system of government which out of whack of any democratic nations in terms of elections or any other norms including developing the human resources, the natural resources and infrastructural development with Ethiopia as a one Nation State in mind.

the satanic tigre liberation front are anything but democratic.
sherman has to spend a day in lice infested tplf dungeon and she will know what democracy means in the definition of tplf.

tplf are ethno fascist thugs who have no idea of what democracy means. dedebit is not a place to learn about democracy. tplf are murderers by trade, they only learned how to pull a trigger, kill people and loot.

I wonder who is forcing sherman to speak about tplf being democratic. are these people paid money to speak lies or what is going on.

Everybody should know that the dying superpower USA continues its support for its puppet TPLF not out of the conviction that TPLF is good for Ethiopia, that country knows that TPLF is terribly bad for Ethiopia, and it is for that reason that that country is supporting TPLF.
Call the USA sadist, evil or anti-Ethiopian, that country knows what it does in Ethiopia.

Read also quote below where someone talks about “hundreds of thousands” of bureaucrats who work for USA in foreign governments and who are “supported” and “protected” by the USA.
How many such bureaucrats exist in Ethiopia ?
If we assume there are 400 000 and divide that with some 200 countries around the world we get the average 2000 bureaucrats in each country. But Ethiopia could be above average and lets say there are 4000 bureaucrats in Ethiopia who work for the USA, and who are perpetuating oppression and misery in their country while serving USA.

” … Forget the bought politicians.  Just imagine the hundreds of thousands of non-elected, unaccountable bureaucrats in all of the governments (as distinct from the people of nations) who exist to support America’s hegemony in their own countries.

And then imagine the purge that will take place in many of those same countries when American hegemony stops supporting and protecting  those bureaucrats.  That’s what I want to live to see. “

How could the US justify the new world order while it helps and abates the Fascist TPLF that has been oppressing and suppressing millions of Ethiopians since 1991, and the US officially becoming an agent for promoting dictatorship against Ethiopians?

At the time when the Fascist TPLF is on its peak of failure and close to collapsing to its disintegration, Ms. Wendy Sherman’s arrival to the Fascist regime’s aid is nothing but trying to save a dying regime going to its second phase of decaying. We, Ethiopians trust in God and in our collective solidarity for carrying out this struggle of ours against the Fascist TPLF which is hopelessly going straight into its grave without a coffin, whether Made Wendy Sherman comes to the for front to read eulogy, or, if she has stamina, to help the grave diggers in lowering the dead regime, or simply her dare defying the law of nature and telling the world that the Fascist TPLF is unbeatable, undefeatable, and immortal, it tells everything and anything she does and tells would definitely be out of shear ignorance and a disrespect to Ethiopians. clearly, the Obama administration is as equally worried as the criminals in the Fascist TPLF organization, and simply is, the US saying to the world, I do things my way even if I am wrong and biased. As history clearly showed the fact and the truth, the suppressive and oppressive regime of Mubarak in its forty plus years in power, it was completely defeated to its eternal death by the people of Egyptians. So also, Ethiopians will show the Fascist TPLF and the Obama regime that as Mubarak had been dejected from his seat and was thrown into prison, all the criminals in the Fascist TPLF murderous organization shall first stand trial, and then will be tossed into eternal prison. Whether Madame Wendy Sherman likes it or dislikes it, hates it or loves it, she will definitely be witnessing when the judgment is handed over to the criminals tantamount to the crime that they committed against Ethiopians.

I see a contradiction in the Washington Post article. The Post says ” If the election is not judged by independent observers to live up to Ms. Sherman’s billing, the administration should swallow her words –and change its approach.” But the Post knows that could not happen. The proof is the Post’s own statement. It reads ” the Obama administration has been reluctant to criticize what it regards as a key security ally in the Horn of Africa.” If the Post admits the administration has been reluctant so far to criticize, what justification the paper has that it might in the future? None that I see. For America “security” is more important, if that means denying the 94 million Ethiopians the desire of having a democratic country, so be it.

[[..For America “security” is more important, if that means denying the 94 million Ethiopians the desire of having a democratic country, so be it...]]

It is a fact that Ethiopia is a crucial U.S. ally in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden when the stability of old allies in Egypt, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia is questionable Ethiopia’s reliability and effectiveness in the war on terror is seen as vital.

We all seen how Cairo’s General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi accepted indirectly with grudge I might add, that Ethiopia, and not Egypt, is now the most influential state on the Nile.

Yes, US needs Ethiopia for their “security”; no question about it but, even if America let us say, “desires” democratic Ethiopia how is she going to get it? Destroy it like Iraq and wait and see what the outcome is going to be if the IS or some military Lunatic take it over? NOT.

So the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question is how you & others define democracy? and seek a feasible path to it, in a political economy dominated by patronage and rent seeking?

IMO, the US didn’t choose the path for China; they shouldn’t attempt choose our path either.

What is known for a fact today is “..there is no state in Africa where talk of a “China Model” sounds more substantive than in Ethiopia under EPRDF rule..”

Dawi @#9, “the sixty four dollar question is how you and others define democracy? and seek a feasible path to it, in a political economy dominated by patronage and rent seeking?”. The silent majority of Ethiopians under Ethiopian Nationalism with goals for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality before the Supreme Law of the Land super cedes ethnic and secessionist rights with respect to the political Model and free market capitalism instead of totalitarianism and/state capitalism on the economic model to the silent majority of Ethiopians at the very least by allow private ownership of land anywhere in Ethiopia, where by democracy is defined as a rule of the people, by the people and of the people. This goals could only be achieved by all opposition parties, including OPDO/EFDF/Medrek/fdre the mirror image of the TPLF/eprdf regime, by coalescing around those goals and the strategies to achieve those goals in a non-violent uprising to political and economic freedom, followed by ratification of the constitution, which embraces both the political and economic models, which are out of whack of democratic nations, which provide a life support to the TPLF/eprdf regime of ex-liberation fronts, which fought against the Derg military Dictatorship against oppression of nations and nationalities with them being under “Ethiopian Colonialism”, which is reflected in the constitution with the ideologies of “System of Political Ethnicity”, where the individual carry identity Gossa )cards for segregation as population census by ethnicity and party alignments by ethnicity,Ethnic Federalism/Ethnic Homelands, Ethnic Secessionism/ Ethnic Nationalism (Article 39 (1) and Totalitarianism and/or State Capitalism, the involvement of the TPLF eprdf regime in the monopoly of Ethiopian land mass, and telecommunication media, press freedom, freedom of assembly and non-violent protests, as well the question of Sovereignty of Ethiopia (Article 8) and individual rights (Article 10 1&2), which hinge upon upon democratic rule than ethnic rule/ethnic dictatorship of either minority now and majority in the future.

Dawi, I write this feedback to clarify you do not misunderstand what I imply by the sentence you quoted of me. I am not in any way believe America should bring democracy to Ethiopia. No, I am a diehard nationalist. I believe Ethiopia should create her own democratic country. In that process if any country is willing to be helpful with no string attached, Ethiopia should welcome such offer. I am crying by myself for years when Ethiopians in North America are naively seemed to have believed with a snap of a finger America will bring democracy to Ethiopia. What she should do is, they believe, help the party they seem to believe democratic gaining political power. That belief is very un-Ethiopian, and I abhor it.

It has been said that democracy is like giving a carrot to a donkey. In Ethiopian’s case, one knows who, is the donkey, the one holding a futile hope that TPLF would hand over power. Please don’t waste your time and go arm your self and fight. That is the only way that you can get rid off the archetype TPLF.

If the Obama administration is defiant enough of ignoring all the crimes committed by Goujilai, the blood robbers on Ethiopians, and stands by the criminals, then US must be willing to send out Madame Wendy Sherman to the supreme court of the people of Ethiopia to witness how the members in the Fascist TPLF line up in front of the judges to receive untold punishment for all sorts of crime these the very criminals that have been directly or indirectly supported by the Obama Administration for as long as the criminals entered Ethiopia.

The Fascist TPLF can not be saved by anybody, including Wendy Sherman and her employer from being crushed into its complete defeat because it is about millions of the oppressed and the suppressed Ethiopians whose the Fascist TPLF’S fate is in their hand, and no one, including the Obama administration can save the blood robbers from turning into ruins. We Ethiopians can take care of the enemy that we have been having for more than two decades fighting it, battling it in every visible and invisible ways that we have been dealing with a hated enemy of ours. For sure, when the enemy is crushed into tenuous dust, Madame Sherman would have a chance or an occasion either to cry, sob, and bang her right feast against her left feast and walk the walk of a defeat.

The policy of the United States has been a self-centered and short sighted one. That is why this great country is financing and supporting the ethnical-fascist rule of the TPLF in Ethiopia. This short sifgted policy of supporting fascism and racism in Ethiopia for expediency will damage the long term interests of the US in Ethiopia and the region. The TPLF is also poised to play its China cards if the US presses it to respect fundamental human rights. The deceiving and superficial stability and peace in Ethiopia will explode in the face of the US and other western donors of the TPLF regime. Then the TPLF will probably withdraw to its main or administrative capital Mekelle but the west will abandon it and seek collaboration with democratic and truly peaceful and stable Ethiopia.

So, we should fight against the fascist tplf regime and its backing countries like the US and show both the culprit, TPLF and its protectors that we Ethiopians are more of like the Egyptians who dismantled the Mubarak regime and make the US ashamed of its years support for the regime it has been defeated, but we are unique and stronger than the Egyptians because of our tenacity and perseverance in our historical record of defeating any sort of enemies that attempted the impossible and the unthinkable things.

Got it Sam – Sorry for getting carried away by quoting you to make the point I wanted to make.

    aha said:

[[..The silent majority of Ethiopians under Ethiopian Nationalism with goals for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians....individual freedom, liberty and equality... free market capitalism..]]

On this point I shall quote Aristotle again:

“Only a wealthy society in which relatively few citizens lived in real poverty could a situation exist in which the mass of the population could intelligently participate in politics and could develop the self-restraint necessary to avoid succumbing to the appeals of irresponsible demagogues”.

Given our inter-group inequality, knowing the ethnic demagogues/opportunists we have to deal with in our country, there is a need of centralized decision making necessity just as natural disasters in likes of earth quake/hurricane & other disasters that requires quick decision making therefore, the diminishing of liberties shall be tolerated because in such instances “democracy” is not viable.

Under these conditions economical development is promoted by semi-authoritarian governments like the Asian-Tigers. That is the philosophy behind Meles’s vision for Ethiopia. He actually asked what you quoted to those who oppose the path he took to show him how they “define democracy? and seek a feasible path to it, in a political economy dominated by patronage and rent seeking?”.

IMO, there is no faster way to get to “democracy” (where you want to go) for Africa today that we know of other than the “developmental state” scheme Meles prescribed and set in motion in Ethiopia.

Madame Wendy Sherman could not or would not come out in the public with all the soiled personality and stained mouth on account of her faulty mouth spewed trash and nonsense on Ethiopians while defending member of the criminal regime, the fake foreign minster, Tedros Adhanom on that day when she appeared totally irrelevant to all people in the global community, yes indeed, she must have been one crazy woman on Earth. Even if she feels superwoman and capable of throwing snowballs at the majestic mountains, for sure, she would not be able to shake the dust off her shoulder when she is burdened by the ruins from the soon to be demolished Fascist TPLF ruins.

By now, Madame Wendy Sherman might have come to her normal mood and would be able to operate in an optimal mode and see and hear herself in retrospect how not only full blown crazy a woman she was, she can also take a few minutes to stand in front a mirror and see how she talked and behaved a complete jerk and irresponsible while spreading lies and faulty news to the world. As per that robber, Tedros Adhanom, a known vagabond and an outlaw, it is just a matter of time that he goes to eternal jail for all the crimes he committed on citizens; he knows, whether Madame Wendy Sherman or Obama would not come to his aid when his fate forces him to walk on his aching knees towards the supreme court of the nations for standing a trial.

Yes, we agree that Ms. Wendy Sherman screwed up everything and was a bad role model for those who show a desire and have a skill to represent the US. True, Ms. Wendy Sherman is a product of a bad governance in the Obama administration that has been failing over and over again for nearly the time that the Democrats took seat in the Whitehouse. For sure, Ms. Clinton will lose the upcoming election big time; we would be more than happy if she would lose the election in every state she thinks she would cheat and lie to the voters. In general, Democrats are packed with failures of all sorts, including Obama and Wendy Sherman, and the rest. This time, Ethiopians-Americans and their other friends must be wise and deep thinkers to not give their valuable vote to any useless Democrat runners, and must also check the background of every candidate with regard to the stand that he or she would take against the dictatorial regime in Ethiopia.

The past few weeks were not smooth going, including the tragedy we all Ethiopians have had on our children nearly all over the world, in particular in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Libya, and Ethiopia. The tragedy Ethiopians have had begun before and after the Fascist TPLF entered Ethiopia and everything and anything they had been doing had been written in their manifesto so that they would put it into practice; in deed, they did and committed all sorts of monetary and murder crimes in every part of our country. One of the most blatant and disgusting testimony that ever been given in public was that the fake Foreign Minster, Tedros Adhanom teased and mocked at Ethiopians through the twisted tongue of Wendy Sherman whose basic knowledge about Democracy is below a grade seven student and manner of etiquettes is in contradiction to what she appeared. In fact, her failures have been the result of her department managers to not mentor her in the right way and in a candid manner; what she is, what she has been prepared to be. So far, she did not come out to the public and ask for apology and learn from other good people how to say important things without being biased to one side and make upset millions. If Madame Sherman has to learn one important lesson in the remaining part of her career without being shamed herself and her department is to be doing things right in the right way with great faith skill and knowledge so that she would be counted on on what she is doing and saying. By now, it must have been too late for her to even write a letter of apology to whom she showed disrespect by giving unneeded and unwanted testimony for the Fascist TPLF criminals for which in the very near future will drench herself in shame when the criminals she supported would all go to jail to serve life.

The future relationship between the democratically people elected government in Ethiopia and the US depends on how quick the US unwaveringly condemns the criminals in the Fascist TPLF regime for all sorts of crimes that they have been committing since they entered Ethiopia and how soon the US take a side with Ethiopians the struggle against the Fascist TPLF. Every single minor and huge crime committed by Fascist TPLF has been recorded on a charge-sheet and is being updated every single minute as the crimes occur; therefore, there is no way out for the Fascist Blood Robbers from obvious hellish mess that they have been in. This month is the month where in coward descendant of the askaris, the now dead robber was strangled by the death that has been chasing him for years and that one decisive day, in that month, that day, that minute and seconds death cornered the fugitive robber, against the sin he made and the crime he committed and turned him into eternal lifeless. Had the coward robber somehow fooled death and still had been a wanted man, dead or alive the dead robber would haven standing trial.

What is commonly referred by many as U.S policy under the code name of ,national interest is not shared by the U.s electorate is not an understatement. Contrary most people would have us to believe, the paradigm in D.C is not between right and left, neocon, liberal or centrist. Be it the political parties media in fact virtually every institution is dedicated to serve what is being referred by some as the shadow government. In short the policy of U.S is crafted by interest group that have in view global control. When it comes to Africans Rule of law, democracy are misused words by the western media for African diaspora. If such be not the case how can we explain The TPLF criminals that are being investigated by Swedish International Criminal Investigators are being dinned and wined in the U.S.A?

Right now, the Fascist TPLF is proving Madam Wendy Sherman wrong on her appearance on Fascist-control media telling the world community that Ethiopia is a democracy and the election is getting better and better; alas, the Fascist regime is terrorizing voters and citizens with highly armed agazi forces day-in-day out knowing the voters will knock it out as they did in 2005 election. Now, the fact is hovering over her while Madam Wendy Sherman is being engulfed in fear totally unable to even swallow her words that spit on Ethiopians on that day. Definitely, Madame Wendy will not be able to come to the rescue of Fascist TPLF while the knock out is being counted to ten, as a result both Fascist TPLF and the disgraced Madame Wendy Sherman will humiliated in front of the world community when the ballot is counted, if indeed, the election is fair and free.
