Addressing Post-TPLF Fears Fear is an inability to imagine possibilities….. Dr. Ebissa Ragassa

December 30th, 2015 Print Print Email Email

There is great fear reverberating among Ethiopianist/Unionist that the sudden fall of TPLF will lead to Ethiopia’s disintegration. What Ethiopia may become after the fall of TPLF is a worrying scenario for many Ethiopianist however, in delaying to join Oromo’s peaceful uprising will not help the impending situation on the ground. Ethiopianist must see Oromo’s protest as people’s revolt against a regime that is bent on destroying the very foundation of our existence. Capitulation, hesitation on the part of Ethiopianist will only delay the removal of TPLF from power, in addition jeopardizing the hope of reviving Ethiopian unity post-TPLF.

Ethiopianist must stand in solidarity with their Oromo brothers and sisters who are waging a peaceful resistance in a face of a merciless enemy. Unless done so quickly when TPLF is scrambling to get a handle on the situation on the ground, Ethiopia’s fate will depend on what we do from this point on. Failure to take part in the uprising will undoubtedly raise a fundamental question whether Ethiopia is an idea worth preserving or is a facade. If Ethiopia’s unity is so fragile that the removal of TPLF will endanger our unity, then Ethiopia unity is in greater jeopardy than we imagine and we must quickly rethink the long-term strategies.

Already, the Oromo peaceful resistance has exposed TPLF’s vulnerabilities awaiting a joint effort to fully remove it from power. The uprising has damaged TPLF beyond repair, they can no longer continue to rule as they did before nor can they continue to rule by inciting ethnic fear, as such the primarily objective is to removal TPLF from power and make Ethiopia a common project. TPLF as an organization has de-evolved to the point of exclusively becoming an agent for foreign corporations by neglecting fundamental Ethiopia’s interest as evident by the lack of progress for past 25 years. The hope of transforming Ethiopia through TPLF is structurally and ideologically impossible. Given what is happening on the ground now, three possible outcomes could unfold post-TPLF.

The first scenario is that TPLF will fall and Ethiopia remains an intact country, this is not a remote possibility as will be discussed further. The second scenario would be Ethiopia will go through a referendum and each nation and nationalities will determine their own fate. The third scenario is that we do nothing, TPLF will continue to sell our lands to stay in power in the name of development and soon than later Ethiopia will become a failed state this a more likely, given the inherent ideology of TPLF.

Ethiopia has lost more than its gained under TPLF dictatorship. Eritrea had seceded fundamentally altering Ethiopia’s territorial integrity with TPLF spearheading the effort. Ethiopia had lost its port, a vital access to the sea that was purposely designed to cripple Ethiopian economically for years to come. TPLF had fundamentally lost internal legitimacy, thereby its continued existence is predicated on foreign military support and financial aid. Finally, Ethiopia is on the verge of becoming a failed state joining her neighbor Somalia where TPLF is acting as mercenary for western interest increasing regional instabilities. in any scenarios, TPLF is no longer a viable option.

There is no doubt that TPLF will fall, it is a matter of time, the eventuality of this should not be taken lightly, as such we must begin to think what kind of Ethiopia we wish to live in. There is more evidence and consensus among people as well as political leaders that Ethiopia will emerge stronger post-TPLF, provided Ethiopianist see Oromo’s peaceful protest as an opportunity rather than a threat. Failing to join the peaceful uprising by the unionist would undoubtedly lead to a catastrophic, a strategic mistake that will both derail the possibility of forming unified country and exacerbate the fragile nature of Ethiopia.

Skeptics may question this possibility of unified Ethiopia post-TPLF given our history and different political ideologies. It is indeed true history has not been kind to us, in fact, it has hindered the development of progressive state and allowed an opportunistic organization to emerge and dictated the term of Ethiopia without taking into account the history of all our people. Ethiopia’s definition changes based on who is in power, what it means to be Ethiopian under Haile Selassie is totally different than under TPLF, as well as Ethiopia’s history interpretations changes based on who is power. What it means to be Ethiopian post-TPLF will change as well, however, unlike the past where a narrow definition of Ethiopia is imposed on others, post-TPLF, the totality of our people’s experience, history, and contribution will be recognized.

Ethiopianist fear what Ethiopia may become, even fear whether it will even exist post-TPLF, knowing each regime that has taken power has manipulated Ethiopian history by championing narrow Ethiopia narrative to appease their power base to extend their rule. This has not only created conflict among peace loving people even after the demise of each regime but also created fertile ground for a dictatorship to reign thereafter. That is why many Ethiopian movements even with best of intentions had failed to transform themselves into ruling democratically once in power. The current Oromo revolt is not only about removing TPLF from power, but to end the rule of dictatorship, which would be a turning point in Ethiopian history.

As such the current Oromo revolt must be seen as a transformative process, that will lay a fertile ground for democracy. The participation of Ethiopianist in the current revolt is not only required to remove TPLF but also is a necessary step in post-TPLF democratic processes. If the unionists join in the struggle without delay, unity has already begun on a victorious ground in which all people had contributed to removing TPLF from power, alleviating the fear of returning to dictatorship post-TPLF. As such, a new beginning would in ensue, in which the people themselves take credit for removing TPLF from power laying seeds for representative democracy. Hence, a unified action will change Ethiopia’s trajectory, from which armed group had always claimed victory, in turn, subjected our people. Removal of TPLF through popular uprising will not only end tyrannical rule over our people but will change our people’s psyche, perception, that will undoubtedly deter undemocratic rule for generations to come, at the same time deploying a well-equipped citizens that develops itself through its own means and decide its own fate. A unionist joining peaceful struggle would only lead to a win-win situation despite the uncertainty of post-TPLF.

Many Ethiopianist indecisiveness to join the Oromo uprising claiming ethnic connotation and is in direct opposition to Ethiopianism would yield undesired results. While the current Oromo uprising was initiated in Oromia, at its core, it is a question of citizenship that all Ethiopian people have been yearning for. If the unionists make a joint effort in removing TPLF, the question of citizenship will be an integral part of our future. The new Ethiopia should be based on a constitution, sets of bills of rights that guarantees our citizens peace and prosperity. Basing Ethiopian unity solely on history and common bond will have disastrous consequences not only for current struggle but for the future. As such, unionist must accept and be ready to participate in the formation of new Ethiopia that is based on higher ideas that will continue to evolve with the needs of our citizens.

Another reason the unionist are hesitant to join the struggle is the demographic power of Oromo people threatens Ethiopian unity if TPLF is suddenly removed without placing some kind of political safeguard to protect against Ethiopian disintegration. The political safeguard Ethiopianist seek would have to be a bold, courageous act in themselves that will convey to other nation and nationality that Ethiopia unity extends far beyond one language, one flag, one history, as such Oromos being a the majority will make separation a difficult case to make. As a majority, even if it’s politically feasible, practically a very difficult task to ascertain secession. Therefore, it would be easier for Oromo people to rearrange Ethiopia in the way that brings peace and prosperity to all groups in the country than seek secession. However, if TPLF remains in power, the possibility of civil war are evident as internal colonization are already taking place. The expropriation of Ethiopian people’s resource, the rearrangement of internal boundaries without consent and the of selling fertile land to foreign companies will exacerbate people’s patients, as a matter of survival secession would be become the only option.

The Oromo peaceful movement has cracked and exposed TPLF’s vulnerabilities. To deal a final blow to this military dictatorship, we all need to stand in defiance against the regime. Our failure to do so will embolden TPLF further jeopardizing our people very existence. Is the fear of post-TPLF worse than living under TPLF rule? A new Ethiopia, without TPLF, is a risk worth taking.

The divide and rule tactic the TPLF has been applying in Ethiopia has created a wide rift and mistrust between the Amhara and Oromo elites. This has paid off to the TPLF and it will continue to exploit it unless the two elite groups come together, build confidence and bridge their gap. The Oromo elite espousing independent Oromia should abandon/reform their politics and take the first confidence building steps for a common goal. The forces of unity should also move some way to meet them. The TPLF leaders are aware that their days in power will be numbereed if the two elites manage to forge a common front against them. Therefore, they will do all they can to thwart any effort by the two join forces against them. If they feel that they are losig power, the TPLF leaders will also use article 39 of their constitution to declare independent Tigray. Generally any rational and concerned Ethiopian force should not believe that the TPLF is the guardian of Ethiopia and its fall will lead to disintegration and chaos. This is one of the make believe stories the TPLF leaders spread to maintain the status quo, create fears and uncertainities. I have a neighbour who has sold his soul to the TPLF for a plot of land in Addis Ababa. His main concern or fear is that the Oromos will drive out the non-Oromos from the area. This guy is among those the people call the greedy or Hodams. At the same time the pro-TPLF guys or weyannes who are the primary beneficiaries of the urban land grab in and around Addis Ababa characterise and condemn the legitimate Oromo resistance and protest against the displacement of poor farmers as terrorism incited by the Eritrean regime and its agents in Ethiopia.

    Look here guys,
we all want to live in a country where people have the freedom to do and say what they want, within the law of the land , without fear of being persecuted for his political views, etnnicity of relegion.. we want people to live , work or do business where they choose. where a person goes, what he does , where he lives etc should not be decided by his ethnic grouping or political views.
People should be free to join political parties of their choice, hold rallies and mass demonstrations have freedom of speech and assembly. this is what many of us want.
yet, there are others, who regard this as being Ethiopianist or Unionist. so let it be.
in the industrialised nations/developed countries people from all walks of life and background mingle together at work places , live in big cities and towns and develop a common culture, join political parties, trade unions, local and regional councils , play games together. share hobbies and other activities.we should learn to live together and develop together in the same way as they do.

I agree with the call for unity. However, you need also to change your OLF Muslim mission to separate from Ethiopia I order to get the unity and struggle for our democracy and freedom. The OLF Muslim separation group is disturbing our country and weakening the struggle for freedom. My fear is not separation and creation of new states but can we do it with out bloodshed? I do not think. The Muslim Oromo separation need to think the bloodshed that will happen with he Somalia group, the Amara group, Benishangule groyp, south people group, and Gambela group of border demarcation when they separate from Ethiopian states. More over they need to consider that in the 21st century do you think the western world need to see weak states in the Horn of Africa? Do you consider the world new religious politics? All this need to be answered before you think separation. So what it wil help us is to fight TPLF for the benefit of all of us not only for Ethiopianist as you said it. Think more before you write

    Dear Writer,

You call Ethiopians who do not believe in the barbaric ethnic politics Unionists. Let it be. What surprises me the most is although I presume you live in the Western world where political parties are established based on ideology, not race or religion, your political taught is not different from the primitive woyanes. Even if you are an oromo, please refrain from being biased since oromos are not the only people who have been subjugated by the previous regimes. The fact is that all Ethiopians, irrespective of ethnic group, have suffered under the previous successive regimes. The solution, therefore, would be to establish parties based on political ideology, not ethnic groups, and bring true democracy to all Ethiopians, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or geography.
The other alternative, even if the TPLF is removed from power, would be a total destruction of the whole nation. Imagine the border war between the so called “oromia” and the northerners in Wollo and Gojjam, the Aderes and other Ethiopians in Diredawa, the Somalis in Borena, the Gurages in and around Shashemee. Therefore, if you have the right mind, forget your labeling of unionist, Ethiopianist etc, let us work for democracy for all by all and live in peace and prosperity. The idea establishing ethnic states will be a demise for all and forever.

    Mr Ragassa,

I am a unionist,Ethiopianist. You or anybody else cannot take this away from me, or intimidate me from calling myself Unionist/Ethiopianist . it is your choice who you call yourself. I am not the only one, millions of others feel the same way. Being a unionist or Ethiopianist , we call on the people of Ethiopia to work together to remove the scurge of ethno fascsism.

we call upon you , the writer, and everybody else to be part of the united movement if you want change. oromo cannot achieve anything without uniting with the rest of us, Unionist/Ethhiopianits. Only if we rise up together as Ethiopians can we crash the ethno fascism of tigre people liberation front.
like wise amhara, gambella, Afar, etc on their own cannot achieve much. our rallyng point is Ethiopians united.

any group that tries to disrupt the united struggle only prolongs the misery of our people. we win together or we lose together.that is the fact!

olf ites ageda is driven in the background by Egypt. it is a public knowledge that olf gangsters like Jawar mohamad who do not see themselves as Ethiopians are working hard misleading others to cause ethnic violence and blood shed and to destroy the unity of the people. to break up Ethiopia will only bring more bloodshed and these anti-ethiopian fascists should be isolated and dealt with.

It is not time to beat around the bush. the enemies of our freedom should isolated and be dealt with.

I think the Oromos have demonstrated unity through action. They have stood up to the anti-human government in Ethiopia. Oromo political parties during various time have called upon, formed allies with various Ethiopia political parties to work toward a common goal. It matters not what you choose to call your selfs Ethiopians/Union, on what basis is Unity formed, don’t you needed to consult the people, don’t the whole Ethiopian people’s culture, history, language matter when conceiving this unity. The contemporary Ethiopian definition excludes majority of Ethiopian people, In fact, TPLF is able to rule because Ethiopianist/Unionist had maintained a a false unity mentality knowing full well not all people are represented under Ethiopia. Don’t just shout Unity, show me under wh
at framework can you unity form?

    Dear writer,
I think it’s a well articulated piece in an effort to solve the problem we’re in. It clearly shows us the blind spot that the group running down the country is exploiting over and over again. The irony is that they are still using it without even modify anything. It seems that the more they used it the more effective it became. The question is why? Some of the obvious answers are our capacity to take a bold action that can heal the real and perceived devides, our inability to stand with each other and fall for the TPLF’s devide and rule tactics.

Hopefully we learned our lesson we can make stop to this partially inflected wound.

we are not there yet to squabble about ‘culture’ ethnicity etc. these are issues to be discussed after a free and democratic system is established.

while we squabble, tplf is looting and raping the country, murdering citizens at will, arresting and torturing people. people then can choose how they want to live

During his inaugural address in 1933 US President Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is FEAR ITSELF. In 1933 US was in deep depression where not only about a third of the population was out work and surviving by bread handout but also those who had money in the bank lost all there money due to the collapse of the vast majority of the banks.
Likewise, Ethiopia is under terrible condition due to the mismanagement, looting, discrimination and corruption by TPLF and their associate regional dictators/murderers. We should be fearless in our pursuit to get rid of the dictators/murderers.
As US would not have defeated the brutal depression w/o conquering fear, so we won’t be able destroy the TPLF dictatorship and transform our country into a VIBRANT FEAR AND FAIR DEMOCRACY w/o overcoming our FEAR. Nevertheless, we need to work on gathering patriotic founding fathers and mothers who will be tasked with crafting a constitution that is based on Unity, Equality, Justice, Freedom, Patriotism and Morality. The goal is to come up with a constitution that is designed to last for hundreds or years.

It is going to be unstoppable people’s movement and multidirectional uprising of Ethiopians to definitely carry out this historical struggle of the millions against the well known common enemy of Ethiopians until the enemy is completely weeded out from the and the lives of all and every Ethiopians who have been fighting against the blood robbers for the last decades.

Yes, the enemy is badly wounded leading to getting weaker and weaker by the counting hours of the ticking cloak and thunderous voice of the millions; too tired the enemy, couldn’t even inhale the remaining few weeks of its life couldn’t be sustain even if it munch on its wounds that it sustained all sorts of defeat it has been encountered in every direction the gun it has pointed at. We have no fear the enemy will survive and bite us as its monster teeth are falling off gradually; we have no fear of the enemy it will defeat us because we have millions backups. With the strength we have since this historical struggle against the enemy that still is getting stronger and stronger, we shall defeat the enemy. No fear of the enemy.

All the leaders of Ethiopia since Menelik ii, except Meles Zenawi, were part Oromos:
Menelik ii was oromo through his mother, Ijigayehu. That was why Ras Ali, later King Mikael,of Wollo helped him escape from Atse Tewodros.
Lij iyasu was the grandson of King Mkael.
Haile Selassie’s full name was Teferi Mekonnen Wolde Mikael Gudina.
    Mengistu Haile Mariam Wolde Ayana.
Other important figures also had Oromo blood. Itegue Bitul,Fitawrari Habte Giorgis, Ras Gobena Ras Abebe Aregay Ras Mesfin Sileshi etc.
The facts having been such, I do not understand why Amharas are being blamed for all the ills. Blame yourselves as well.

It is a matter of fear, but a probability of chance of occurrence that is inevitable to occur, if the present coalition of protests by existing coalition in OPDO/EFDF/Medrek/fdre with additional participation of civil and religious organization protesting in Washington with those in the coalition of Mederek still retain their ethnic agenda with goals for a) respect of ethnic rights, 2) yekilil Mengistats iqulinet Mebit Mekeber”, 3)human rights, a common denominator and 4)democracy to be superimposed over ethnic rule/ethnic dictatorship a campaign with the current TPLF/eprdf regime with the ideologies of ethnic federalism, secessionism and totalitarianism and/or Developmental state capitalism as part and parcel of the constitution, implicitly supporting it, stays in tact after ousting TPLF by protest alone as a strategy is Dejavu all over again with ethnic majority rule, but never democratic never the less. That is the probability but not fears. It might be the risk for those who embrace the idea of a coalition in Medrek, without embracing the ideology of Ethiopian Nationalism of Ethiopia as one nation state of multi-ethnic groups (80) with national agenda with the goals for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers to individual freedom, liberty and equality to precede ethnic and secessionist rights, an attribute to a democratic government that rules by consent of the governed, rather than ethnic dictatorship that rules at the point of the gun be it minority or majority ethnic group absent of individual rights front and center in the constitution.

@Zewdu. Nobody is blaming Amharas, however from the onset, all ethnic group have rejected Ethiopia model of unity especially Oromos since Menelik II who had attempted to incorporate other nations into Ethiopian fold by force rather than introducing practical political arrangements that embrace all people. The rejection of Ethiopia was not because Oromos were against unity, but its rejection of flawed model of Unity that did not take into account the aspiration of all people. So while the narrow Ethiopian narrative was appealing to Amharas, but was a poison to other nations, hence thereafter only by force can you rule Ethiopia. However, let’s keep this historical event in the background and focus on the present. TPLF has become cancer to All Ethiopian people. While those historical events can be remedied with discussion and proper policy implementation, TPLF is Cancer that must be removed imminently otherwise it will eat away Ethiopia.

There is a wall (physical and psychological) that is built by ethno nationalists. As long as that wall stands Oromos, Amharas, Tigres… etc will stand alone. The writer of this article is one of the architects of this wall. This unrest is to make the wall permanent. It is to cement it by blood. Ethiopians should have nothing to do with it.
Our struggle should be to tear down the wall.
Dr. Ebissa Ragassa this was your show of force. And you failed. You have used thousands of Oromo blood and bone to build this unholy wall. And it did not protect Oromos. It failed. And now you are calling Ethiopians to rescue you.
Our peace, freedom and security can only be achieved by tearing down the wall you built in our heart and land. Not by helping you build it.

There is far deeper problem explaining the dysfunctional Amhara (unionist) political behavior choosing to look at it from side line.
They lack integrative behavior.

It is complete humiliation for Oromo to call on Amhara for unity. I would rather choose if all Oromos perish from the surface of Earth than begging Amharas which are mortal enemies of Oromos for their rescue. Don’t beg them who are useless for themselves let alone giving Oromos lending hand. I must tell you that if any Oromo group forms alliance with so called Ethiopianist who see Oromo as migrant not only new to Ethiopia but also to the Erth itself that emerged from water and learned walking on the surface of the earth just in 16th century. They consider themselves the only true original inhbitants displaced by Oromos and their ambition is always how to cleanse oromos from the land they claim theirs. You talk about creating democratic Ethiopia with them. How can you do that while they consider you as a migrant thatinvaded their territory who should abide by their terms of reference and dictate as second citizen? I would rather kill my self than seeing alliance with Amhara to snatch our right we gained so far and reduce as to slavery. Stop this unwholy alliance. Amharas remain our #1 mortal enemy and forever.

Why do Oromos call Amharas mistakenly Sidamas? Is it not because Oromos first encountered Sidamas as they were expanding up north?
Watch the video on Esat Prof Milkias’s, an Oromo, interview to learn the history of Ethiopia. May be after that, you will be thanking Menelik for saving Wollega Oromos from Dervishes.
