Dictatorship is by no means an alternative for Ethiopia Dubale Tariku

March 19th, 2016 Print Print Email Email

Most Ethiopians agree that a pragmatic solution to the existing political impasse is important to prevent disintegration. Whether we choose to believe it or not many Ethiopians seem to be so terrified of the floating indication that the country will be disintegrated from statehood to tribal-hood, if the hovering potential ethnic conflict is unabated. When the regime supporters exploit the fear to justify for TPLF dictatorship indefinite rule, even well-wishers seem to see a variant of dictatorship as an alternative for keeping Ethiopia’s integrity. One can speculate both sides may have been forced to favor dictatorship out of sense of hopelessness of the stifled democratic struggle in Ethiopia. However, be it for pragmatic or other reasons dictatorship should by no means be viewed as better alternative to democratic governance. For positive traits of dictatorship a handful of Asian countries may be cited, but hundreds of other countries can be cited for its negative traits.

The jobs that dictators are championed to do better, the democratic governance had done the same jobs best. The TPLF propagandist often championed dictatorship for keeping territorial integrity and advancing economic development. The argument to favor dictatorship is its ability for swift decision it can make because of the military and security power Dictators control. Dictators are capable of implementing practically any policy they initiated without seeking public consent. However, the argument neglects to consider the policies dictators initiate are sources of economic stagnation and risks territorial integrity. Most importantly, they neglect the fact that dictatorship resulted long-term societal decay of a nation. What we see in Ethiopia and elsewhere in Africa is deep hopelessness among citizens and unprecedented brutality by dictators towards fellow human being, which rarely had seen in any of democratic countries. It is ironic to think that the same entity that caused the instability and insignificant economic development are expected to give solution for the same problems they caused.

Ethiopians have experienced decades of oppression. Thus, the problem of dictatorships is so wide in scope and lengthy in time. Unquestioning submission to authority figures and rulers has been part and parcel of the culture. From the modern history of Emperor Haile Selassie to the current Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) tribal regime, all three consecutive governments created and used state institutions to subordinate society. However ineffective, during the Emperor’s time few independent civic and societal institutions initiated. The “derg” junta destroyed the few. Other than those initiated to advance socialist ideology, “derg” never attempted to create independent civic institutions or allowed the public to create one. The TPLF tightened the noose more than ever before, and weakened and subordinated primarily the judicial systems to destroy, incarcerate and legally torture any opponent. The little independence the judicial institutions enjoyed in the past withered away. Ethiopians witnessed unprecedented mockery of legal system. Over the phone and under-the-table directives, the ghost of security officials and brutal cadres presided on the respected chambers and rendered unlawful judgments on defendants.

Most of all, TPLF had set the condition for breakdown of Ethiopia by enforced ethnic administrative systems and encouraged toxic ethnic relationship. For a moment, let’s admit the truth what Ethiopia got out of current dictatorship. Forgetting insidious racism that are driven by extreme hate, in the last 25-years, TPLF produced ethnic administrative “killils” if a fellow Ethiopian citizen go to these ethnic “killils” will be ethnically stereotyped and likely be discriminated. In these ethnic “killils”, Ethiopians are discriminated in various ways. One, the fellow Ethiopian citizen is discriminated for not speaking their language and not knowing their culture. Two, they simply assume that he/she has no right to come or live in their “killil” and forcefully displaced. Three, the administrators including police force most likely stands against the fellow citizen in official places. Four, the property the fellow citizen owned do not actually belong to the fellow citizen and see his/her success with resentment. To say the least, the university campuses are challenging to ethnic groups that came from elsewhere. To tell the gravitas of the problem in the simplest term possible, TPLF produced a lot of regressive ethnic advocates and politicians who argues in straight-face that discriminatory action against other ethnic groups is heroic, progressive, and shows the love of their ethnic group. Among these crowds, a fair minded person who welcome all Ethiopians as citizens and sees things in broader and inclusive ways is often branded as an ethnic traitor. All such societal ills, including ethnic discrimination, corruption, nepotism, brain drain, migration, eliciting money, poverty, reached unprecedented level during TPLF dictatorship.

Ethiopians became under control by merciless tribal dictatorship of Tigre brethren. Currently, fear, not laws and regulations, controlled Ethiopians. What Ethiopia produced out of the various dictatorships is a terrified society. Professionals and commoners alike are too frightened to share their resentments to dictatorship. Political parties are divided along ethnic lines and unable to work together to achieve freedom. Even those political parties organized by political philosophy are divided by security official manipulation or intimidation. Trust among citizens eroded to not believe in each other even to not do anything at individual’s own initiative. Notice the close down of organization initiated by individuals such as commonly known EHRCO (Ethiopian Human Rights Council).

What Ethiopians need is freedom to revive societal spirit and morale integrity, which are going down to the drain. Perhaps societal spirits soared temporarily because of the short-lived resistance of the near past of “kinijit”. The resistance turned out to be insufficient to overcome fear and change the dictatorial regime. Sadly, those resistances may even have brought more fear and suffering. Out of these gloomy mist, the wide spread protest broke in Oromia killil. Obviously, with the suspicions and disdains inculcated in citizens other Ethiopians are watching from sideline. The same way as kinijit fall, the protest in Oromia killil might fall short to get the much-needed freedom. In the mean time, Ethiopians continue suffering under TPLF dictatorship without future hope and with widespread societal ills.

When people propose dictatorship over democracy, clear thinking is needed because of the dangers and negative societal traits described above involved. It should be clear there is no real peace under dictatorship. No matter how much well-intended submission of citizens to cruel oppression by ruthless dictators who inflict atrocities on millions of people is no real peace. As has been seen in Ethiopia for the past several decades, there is no freedom and justice or development in dictatorship, but long-term societal moral decay.

THE PATH TO HARMONY AND UNITY DAMAGED BY NEFTEGNAS

The Showa Amhara (NEFTEGNA) dominated governments for the past 100+years did the most damage Ethiopia and Ethiopians future beyond repair, and repairing and fixing Amharas mess will take generations if not centre.
The sad part is that the Nefetegna Amhara dominated kings for the past 100 + years had systematically oppressed and genocided Oromos,Tigres,Eritreans,Gambelas etc….in order to insure Showa Amhara’s (Nefetegna’s)political, social, cultural and economic dominance over non Showa Amharas. This is why today we are it witnessing suspension among tribes, and this also the main reason we are witnessing tribal genocidal crime against Amharas by Oromos extremist such as OLF, even young Oromo protestors this days prone to selectively burning Amharas houses and Amhara’s businesses residing within Oromo regions.
This why I recommend national dialogue between Amharas and Non Amhara Ethiopians to forgive and forget and we all should rather concentrate on our common enemy (Poverty) and tackle social, economic and technological backwardness.

why force the tigre to be Ethiopian if they do not want to. let them go their way.
why force oromo to be Ethiopian when they do not want to
why force any other group to be Ethiopian if they do not want to.

Let those groups and peoples who identify themselves as Ethiopian come out and fight for a united one Ethiopia. it is time to take a stand.

    Gojam,

In the first place, who are you? You think you are smart; you named yourslef Gojam Debremarkos. You are Woyanne or OLF Narrow minded. Do have any prove that Amhara killed Oromos,Tigres,Eritreans,Gambelas? This is the TPLF and OLF’s usual barking. You like or not Amhara is one of the largest segment in the country. You and your likes can not eliminate the Amhara. You started by accusing the Showa Amhara is responsible what TPLF is doing now and you twisted your conclusion as if you are not anti-Amhara. @ Gojame,

Why are you making only Oromos were the only victims, we all Ethiopians were degraded into total poverty and hard life because of King Menilike and King Haileselassie narrow tribal agendas. Even higher learning institutions and educations were discriminatly given to central amhara regions, universities and colleges, high schools were restricted to these showa regions in order to give an upper advantage to showa tribs men, unless you travel to this showa area regions higher education was impossible to most Ethiopians. This is also the main reason why we are witnessing higher concentration of elites from single showa amhara regions, not because the showa amharas were smart or qualified but rather the discrimination advantage given to them by these tribalist racist showa kings.
The majority of Ethiopians regions (Wollega,Sidama,Gambela,Tigraye,Harrer,Wollo,Afar,Gonder, southern nations,Gojam etc…) never had no single college or universities till late 1990′s.

Where in Showa Amhara regions were the high schools and universities you wrote about were located in Haile Selassie’s time?
You and the likes of you are just trying to justify your tribalist stance by accusing Amharas of this abhorrent belief in this day and age. Examine your conscience and repent to your God.

For peace and prosperity to prevail in Ethiopia, the government must be lead by respected and capable hand-picked elders who are፦
    1)Anti-tribalism,
    2)Nationalist,
    3)Anti-secession,
    4)Anti-corruption,
    5)Human Rights respector,

    Mr. Dubale you wrote,

“Dictators are capable of implementing practically any policy they initiated without seeking public consent. However, the argument neglects to consider the policies dictators initiate are sources of economic stagnation and risks territorial integrity….. It is ironic to think that the same entity that caused the instability and insignificant economic development are expected to give solution for the same problems they caused.”

From the antiquity much of the world and in diverse continents has witnessed dictatorial regimes. Ethiopians have a fair share of this form of rule, Emperor Haileselaisse,Mengistu and TPLF clique. Judging by the performance of these regimes we can say still much of Ethiopia is backward and her people impoverished. In fact ,we can assuredly say there has never been in the history of that nation a loss of and a sense of dignity in the lives of our people as it is now. Infact, the so called economic development which has become the TPLF cadres Mantra in these forums is nothing but economic empowerment only for the very privileged TPLF clique.

Therefore dictatorial regimes, except in few homogeneous nations, have never been known to promote peace, prosperity and development that will benefit the people at large. Even if there is a seemingly economic development in these nations there is no doubt such must have come a t the expense of huge sacrifice of freedom by the general public. The problem is even compounded when the brute force at the center of power happen to be an exclusive ethnic party as we have now. One of the chief feature of exclusive ethnic party’s is anonymity among members permits them to hide crime as well as Control key national institutions such as Army, Air force, police, Security, Banking, customs, mining to run their agenda.

Beside, all this cliques of such nature plan any design any economic project strictly motivated guided by profit as opposed by studies and recommendations made by experts. When it comes to the opposition a choice has to be made whether to sit on the side line as pursuing a fragmented party program and let TPLF remain in the helm for un foreseeable future or agree on a national vison at least among those who share the same principle by agreeing to side line the obstructionist organizations.Once this compromise is reached on all organizations that embrace national vison, then a public forum may be needed to educate the public at large about, liberty , democratic process, and rule e of law.
For this reason the alternative to Ethiopia is educate the people at large to participate in the democratic process. This can be done through a public forum as the one we have in Vision Ethiopia by inviting gusts and citizens from the cross section of our society. I also think principle need to be corner stone to promote liberty and peace than entanglement with unlikely forces. Political correctness is coasting our people. Personally I am inclined to call fringe and out layers by their right name. If we cannot address this issue in timely fashion we will be doing harm to the struggle. Detractors and anarchists need to be shun. A good example in this is commentators #1-4 above have in common one thing; they are here to justify their Party’s modus Operandum. The have noting to contribute tpo the ongoing struggle for freedom.

They have no clue what is going on inside in Ethiopia. They have been talking about Nefetegna the last fifty years where took them in this horrible situations. Getaw, You meant out the point that Amhara is freed them from being enslaved. Amhara never killed anyone in Ethiopia. I am surprised at OLF supperters while Woyane killing the young Oromos and they still dare to cry out about Amhara. I suspect, these people might be who killed the innocent Amharas in Bedeno and Arebagugu. Anyway, time will bring those murderers to justice one day. Whatever the OLF call Amhara, Amhara is Amhara. A message to the Administrator of this website: #9 Freedom is not me. Just for the record.
    Regarding dictatorial form of government:
    1. 100% fail. They usually get overthrown by violent means. The cycle repeats as long as it is replaced by another dictatorial gov. The only way to break the cycle is to institute a democratic government
    2. 0% are successful over a long term. Over a short term anyone can be successful. Criminals, mafia, thieves, prostitutes, beggars can live large for a short period of time but over the long haul the party is over as most end up in jail, get killed, commit suicide or die of disease.
    3. All dictators have absolute power. As the saying goes, “ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.” Not only are the TPLF/EPRDF leaders corrupted absolutely but also made CORRUPTION an acceptable and necessary way of life for vast majority of Ethiopians.
    4. Chinese Dictatorship is sometimes mentioned as a successful form of government. However, the truth is that China is a mess. Its economy is in grave danger. Hundreds of millions of Chinese are out of work b/c gov is terrible at creating jobs for the long term.

“The Showa Amhara (NEFTEGNA) dominated governments for the past 100+years did the most damage Ethiopia and Ethiopians future beyond repair, and repairing and fixing Amharas mess will take generations if not centre.”
You are 110% wrong. For sure you are TPLF slave and their butt hole licker.
The Amhara dominated government for hundreds of years, perhaps 500 or more. It is b/c they were the most educated. Starting from 4th century BC when the Axumite Empire accepted Christianity until the end of the 2nd world war in 1945, education in Ethiopia/Abyssinia was primarily given in churches and monastery. Since most of Ethiopian churches/monasteries were/are in Amhara region, the Amhara people benefitted from the widespread availability of basic education. Consequently, Ethiopian/Abyssinian Kings over the last few centuries gave government/administrative position to Amhara people because they were the only one who know how to read and write. Fast forward to the time of Menelik and Haile Selassie, the same logic applied. For the most part both of them gave government positions to those with the highest qualification. In fact due to lack of qualified personnel in Ethiopia, both especially Haile Selassie had given government positions to Europeans. For example, the first few CEO of Ethiopian airlines were Europeans. Out of the first 7 Ethiopian pharmacists who were sent by Haile Selassie to study overseas 4 were of Eritrean Origin. Moreover, Haile Selassie has an Amhara, Oromo and Gurage blood. Whereas, Menilik has an Amhara and Oroma blood. Therefore, you can’t characterize them as pure Amhara Kings.

    You continued to say,
“The sad part is that the Nefetegna Amhara dominated kings for the past 100 + years had systematically oppressed and genocided Oromos,Tigres,Eritreans,Gambelas etc….in order to insure Showa Amhara’s (Nefetegna’s)political, social, cultural and economic dominance over non Showa Amharas.”
Again totally false. I explained above the reason for the Amhara people’s dominance in government. Most of Ethiopian province administrators hailed from Amhara region. Under Haile Selassie Ethiopia was feudal form of government. Some governors were corrupt and treated their constituents harshly but some did a great job. My close relative, who does not hail from amhara region and was the governor of a province, took great pride in providing a selfless and honest service to his constituents. There is no evidence of genocide committed by Amhara people against other ethnic groups. By contrast their are numerous evidence of genocide committed by TPLF against the Gambela, Omo river valley, Afar and Somalia people.
In conclusion, under Haile Selassie regime there were good and bad Amhara leaders. Even though government was dominated by people from Amhara Ethnic group and few of abused their power and enriched themselves, the vast majority of the Amhara people were very very poor.

Brothers and sisters ignore what some TPLF cadres say about Amhara,Oromo, etc.
Tigrayes are inherently hateful, dishonest and opportunist scum bags .
Their entire premise of arguments is based on perceived advantage the Amharas gain at the expense of other ethnic groups.their poverty and general backwardness is wrongly and deliberately linked to the Amharas.

The question is who made them the arbitrators and judges?
If they really care about the Oromos ,what the hell are they doing in Oromo land? why don’t they go to Tigrai and mind their own parochial politics?

I am Oromo ,born and bred in Ambo.I have never seen so much latent animosity and contempt towards any person from Tigrai all my life.the Amharas lived with us for eons, intermarried, speak the language and hardly seen as mortal enemies
contrary to TPLF’s made up history.

Tigrayes have no business in Oromo affairs and should just piss off to their own tribal kingdom.

TPLF is the new neftegna.while we demonise the Amhara, to the delight of Tigrayes,TPLF is busy stealing our resources and flogging the land in our faces.
we must not play their dirty games by engaging in anti-amhara rhetoric.
as the amharic saying goes “የፉክክር ቤት ሳይዘጋ ያድራል”.

BTW Oromos don’t use the term “neftegna” as much as TPLF cadres.

    dissaaasssa=gojam,
this callous individual is a typical dog of the dead fascist Zenawi, and he has been spewing his cheap anti amhara propaganda all over the place using the same phrases and words again and again. changing his identity , sometimes as an oromo , other times as an amhara.
the behaviour of this person makes him the lowest of the low even among his tribes men – hateful, narrow minded bigot,

    To Mr.Gojam,

Ethiopias history and i concur with your honest comment.

Ethiopias history indicates that the short sighted narrow tribalist showa Amhara bloodless fake kings/Neftegnas (King Menilike and King Haileselassie) were the most destructive enemy of Ethiopia. Beyond stealing Oromo’s land, oppressing oromos and killing Oromos, these two lazy nefetegnas fake kings had also sold Ethiopias stragetic lands and ports, included Dejibuti to france,Somalia to Itlay and brits, Eritrea to Italy.

Which one of my two postings above made you think that I am a TPLF dog?
Please read them again and judge for yourself.
Even if I were a Tigrayan, I would never support their ethnocentric policies because I have conscience and believe in equal treatment of humans regardless of their ethnicity or anything else.

You are pointing specifically Shewa Amara(neftegna) and You said it again and again.
but Other Amaras, whether they are from Gojam or Gonder are the same.
The Gojam grievance against Shewa is already deep and understood.
That is what You are reflecting on Your boring statements.
What difference do other Amaras have? The same thing.
But there is one reality, you should not forget if you have the right mind to think. People in general are not responsible unless you are mentally sick person.
Amaras in general or any group of people should not be blamed for two reasons: First, people are not power holders and there are no facts for that.
Second, generalizing people and putting them in one box is the works of fascists. People whose level of hatred is deep, can think the way You think. May be you grew up that way and You can not change Your twisted mind.

The notion of integration and disintegration are the outcomes of the underlying principles of Ethiopian Nationalism and ethnic federalism, and secessionism, secessionism, totalitarianism and/or developmental capitalism, respectively, where the latter is built into the constitution. This constitution as the Grand Master Plan form which all the laws are derived is formatted after ex-USSR, where the already existing republics are designed to fit the newly created ethnic boundaries/ethnic enclaves instead of keeping in place of the original provinces of assorted ethnic groups like the Addis Ababa City Government, which gave rise to the Oromo students uprising over the Master Plan for the expansion of Addis Ababa (“finfine”), which is the seat of the federal government and supposedly “the capital city of Oromia” into the Oromo Killil Astedader /Oromia”, which is also dominated by crony capitalism by TPLF /Political, TPLF EFFORT, and TPLF affiliated enterprises, which would have been a none issue if the expansion of Addis ababa was undertaken into the original Shewa Province in people rather than the current ethnic oriented regime, which is characterized as ethnic minority Dictatorship, rather than Dictatorship with unbalanced branches of government with party alignments along ethnic agenda rather than national agenda.

Against this background, your argumentative position/theisis is: “Dictatorship should by no means be viewed as better alternative to democratic governance”, in an ideology and constitution that ethnic and secessionist rights prevails over individual freedom, liberty and equality which are precursor to liberal and/or social democracy.

The underlying reasons you provided in the body of your essay to the prevalence of Dictatorship are: “Unquestioning submission to authority figures and rulers has been part and parcel of the culture”. Despite the facts “the three consecutive governments created and used to subordinate society”. and “Ethiopians have experienced decades of oppression”.

I agree with the way you framed the underlying reasons as to fit Ethiopian Nationalism of Ethiopia as One Nation State of multi-ethnic groups as integral part of Ethiopia, where bigger and smaller ethnic groups have specific functions for the survival/integration of Ethiopia as opposed to the disintegrative approach based on ethnic and secessionist politics and/or policies built into the constitution.

However, I disagree of putting the three regimes into the same category of “Dictatorship”, which could have been labeled as perhaps as feudal moachic system, Military Dictatorship and minority ethnic Dictatorship with future majority Ethnic Dictatorship with relative absence or presence of democratic governance and the Rule of Law and unresolved question resulting from the struggle by EPRP and others about the land reform and workers rights, reflecting upon all Ethiopians, which was overtaken by oppression of nations and nationalities, culminating into the creation of the ideologies of ethnic federalism (art. 46), secessionism (art. 39 (1), totalitarianism (art. 40) and developmental state capitalism along with ethnic and secessionist rights prevailing over individual rights(art. 10 (1 &2), and art 8, the sovereignty of Ethiopia. Ethnic federalism serves as prelude to ethnic secessionism/nationalism, future boundary conflicts as the case was wit Eritrea, ethnic cleansing preceded by genocide, and out migration of Ethiopians for slave labor in the Middle East along with violation of human rights violations on peaceful protesters and freedom of speech and press.

These predicaments/narratives stated above calls for transformation from the current ideologies built into the constitution to Ethiopian Nationalism with goals for unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty of Ethiopia and Ethiopians, where the last item refers for individual rights to prevail over ethnic and secessionist rights.

As such your concluding statement, namely, “there is no real peace under dictatorship”, because … ” repression by dictators inflict atrocities on millions of people”, is not a solution , but a statement of fact.
