October 11th, 2007 Print Print Email Email

Rep. Christopher Smith, R-NJ House Foreign Relations Committee will discuss Ethiopia and Human Rights.

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith(R-NJ), ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Africa &Global Health Subcommittee, will be speaking about his efforts to advancehuman rights reform in Ethiopia as well as recent legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives that aims to hold Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s government accountable for their abuses and promote change in the country’s human rights practices.

Smith, the author of the “Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006″ (H.R. 5860) which was introduced during the 109th Congress, will discuss that legislation and the efforts that led to House passage of a similar bill earlier this month.

Last year, an Independent Commission of Inquiry established by the Ethiopian Parliament reported that Ethiopian security forces fatally shot, beat or strangled 193 people protesting election fraud in 2005 — a number that far exceeds the Government’s official death toll.

    Copy and paste from walta

Many had hoped that Birtukan would serve ethiopia with comptency. Sadly, the latest political episode has exposed her political vulnerability as she appears to be a follower rather than a leader.

This was a time for her to prove her leadership qualities, her integrity and respect for the people who voted for her.

Unfortunately she is following Birhanu Nega and others who are following their own temporarily hidden plan. Many express their view that she even does not have any idea on what goes on in the minds of the masterminders of her group activities.

As a person she looks and sounds to be a good person. But she is surely misled by some individuals from her group and that is why she is a follower and not a leader in that group.

They are simply fooling her by overtransporting her from place to place, overloading her neck with tones of flowers and flattering words simply to use her as a tool for the agenda of the masterminders of the divided Kinijit.
I had expected that she will be a mediator and solve the current impasse rather than just following Birhanu Nega.
She obviously lacks wisdom and political intelligence to detect this wrong political move of Nega and some other ignorant followers. It is also very pathetic that she does not have a sincere political adviser to save her from political failure.
    serve your country, be truthful
