ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – A bomb attached to a bus exploded in northwestern Ethiopia Thursday, killing eight people, government officials said. Ethiopia said rival Eritrea was responsible.

The bomb went off in Humera in Tigray State, about 373 miles northwest of the capital, Addis Ababa, Tigray State Vice President Abadi Zemo said. Humera borders Sudan.

Eight people died in the explosion and 26 were wounded including an 11-year-old child, police spokesman Demsash Hailu said.

Abadi blamed the Eritrean government.

“There is no doubt.”

Eritrean Information Minister Ali Abdu denied the accusation, telling The Associated Press it was “total rubbish.”

Ethiopia and Eritrea regularly trade accusations that one seeks to destabilize the other.

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year guerrilla war. The border between the countries was never officially demarcated, which led to a 2 1/2-year war that ended in 2000. Though the fighting has ended, the border issue continues to simmer.
