Robert Cheruiyot has won his third consecutive Boston Marathon and becomes the first four-time winner since Bill Rodgers.

On the women’s side, Ethiopian Dire Tune won in a thrilling finish that was the closest in Boston Marathon history.

Tune and Alevtina Biktimirova ran stride for stride with each other for the last few miles, then exchanged the lead several time in the last 800 meters.

Tune broke away in the final 100 meters to win her debut Boston Marathon in an unofficial time of 2:25.25, two seconds ahead of the Russian Biktimirova. diretune.jpg

The previous closest finish in 112 year race was 10 seconds.

The 25-year-old Biktimirova ran Boston once before in 2006, and finished sixth. She won the Honolulu Marathon this December.

The 22-year-old Tune won her second straight Chevron Houston Marathon in January.

Dire Tune keeps getting better and, at 22, she is a rising star in the Ethiopian contingent. A winner of three marathons over the past two years, Tune likes the feeling of victory and states her Boston expectations with mature confidence: “I want to win Boston.” In 2007, in Houston, she broke marathon great Ingrid Kristiansen’s 23-year-old course record and then returned this year to shatter her own mark by more than two minutes. Tune is a two-time member of the Ethiopian squad at the IAAF World Marathon Championships. She also competed at the World 20K in 2006 in Debrecen, Hungary, where she finished fourth in a personal best 1:05:16 to help Ethiopia earn the silver medal.

PERSONAL NOTES:
Tune began running at age 16 while in high school. She is married and enjoys cooking and doing work around her home. She trains with a group of athletes in Addis Ababa, and looks to continue the strong winning tradition of Ethiopians at the Boston Marathon.

“I promise to compete in the Olympics for the marathon and win a gold medal.”
