A Call for a Public Meeting

A coalition of major opposition party supporters, civic organizations and patriotic individuals has set up the Dallas & Fort-Worth Coordinating Committee for the Commemoration of the May 2005 Election and the victims of repression in Ethiopia. The Committee calls upon all Ethiopians who live in Dallas Forth-Worth and surrounding areas to come together for a Public Meeting on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Buoyed by the spirited campaign conducted by opposition parties and taking advantage of the brief democratic opening in the country, in May 15, 2005 the Ethiopian people showed to the world their resolve, readiness and capability to dispel the deep seated fear of incumbent dictatorial regimes to bring changes in the way they were governed.

Unfortunately, this process was aborted as Melesse Zenawi; the head of the ruling party appeared on TV and declared a state of emergency in the Capital in the middle of vote counting across many parts of the country. This was a clear indication that the government was starting to have second thoughts about the democratization process that started during the election of 2005. In the days that follow, the Melesse regime used the electoral board to declare itself winner of the election, used the courts to send the leadership of the major opposition party to prison for almost two years. Most of all, it unleashed its security forces to kill, torture, imprison opposition members and supporters across the country.

Almost three years after this tragic event, Melesse’s regime just conducted an election that is dubbed sham and devoid of competition by observers such as Human Rights watch and declared it self winner of all seats the ruling party runs for. As supporters of our people’s aspiration, we are not going to let the shameless and outright usurping of power by a thuggish clique. Let us meet on Saturday, May 17 to:

Renew the spirit of the land mark election of 2005

Commemorate the victims of Melesse’s regime who are killed in broad day light

Help our people get back to their desired goal of democracy, peace and prosperity

Place: The Radisson Hotel, 1981 N. Central Expwy, Richardson TX 75085
Date & time: Saturday, May 17, 2008, starts exactly at 1:00PM
For information call: (972)333-5466
