An Israeli elephant expert was killed Thursday morning in a blast in the Ethiopian capital.

Prof. Yehezkel Shoshani, a world-renowned specialist, was killed after a minibus blew up in the heart of Addis Ababa. Two other passengers were killed, and nine were seriously wounded.

Shoshani, 65, dedicated his life to the study of elephants. For eight years, he studied elephant communities in the east African state of Eritrea, and moved to Ethiopia last year to teach at the University of Addis Ababa.

In an interview during a recent visit to Israel, he told Haaretz that the volatile political situation near the Eritrea-Ethiopia border was one of the reasons that motivated him to move to Ethiopia.

Shoshani grew up in Tel Aviv, and became interested in elephants after reading in his youth about a friendship between a man and an elephant. He studied zoology in Michigan and went on to carry out research in Sri Lanka and Kenya. He became a leading elephant expert, and established an elephant lovers’ society in America. His research focused mainly on elephants’ anatomy and evolution.

His wife lives in the United States, and he has relatives in Israel.

Shoshani dedicated a lifetime of work to preserving Ethiopia’s declining population of elephants in a national park near the Eritrea border. The area has witnessed some fierce fighting between the two countries.

how this “renowned” expert take the public minibuses? At 9.00 in the evening, moving in a public mini-bus, there are some funny things in it. I am very sorry for the tragedy but it should be well scrutinised.

What is wrong with you people? those who think there no elephant in Tigray are people who are absolutely ignorant and blind about they country Ethiopia. It is very shameful to see this kinds of ignorance among some Ethiopians. Have been in that part of ethiopia? if they don’t I am sttrongly reccommending them to go and visit western Tigray to see the wonderful elephants. Don’t be blinded by hate politics that you inheritted from your own so called politcal leaders, because they have caused you failure they will continue to cause you failure in the future. The reason, you don’t know what you are talking about and are not determine to know your country and the truth. Tigray was the home of elephats and used them trasportation for demostic, trade, and war during the axumite kingdom. Please go back read your country’s history before you open your mouth.

    For TG

Come on Tg, first of all,I think they said, this guy killed in Addis, and second he moved from Eritrea not from Tigray. I don’t think so, if Tigray has elephants our expert wouldn’t go to Eritrea.

    Hi gheta,
Unlike human beings animals do not acknowledge neither colonial nor none-colonial boundaries or regard themselves as part of any nation or nationality. So they do not posses any national identity card or passport for that matter. As salmons return to the spot where they were hatched elephant and other animals in general follow their natural instinct to do whatever it’s in their nature regardless of what national/international law says.

In addition I fail to see the same inconsistency in the article as you did because had the expert moved from Tigray then would there be a reason to mention Eritrea? I’ve been away but isn’t Tigray still part of Ethiopia?

Ewnetu, I found your comment to be a bit “feudalistic” or “Hollywoodish”.

It seems to me that some of the comments were politically even racially motivated but I can think of many other appropriate platforms to address issues and express opinions than under this particular article.

I couldn’t believe what Iread from the person who claims himself Ethiopian disowned the right of Tigray as not part of Ethiopia.Mr. BigBalaga, I don’t think you’re an ethiopin youself. you’re interferring into the enternal affair of Ethiopia by claiming you’re part of us. There is no Ethiopian history with out the history Tigray or there no history of Tigray with out the history of Ethiopia. Because the history of my country can not be thought one without the other.Having said that let me take to the elephats and the elephat expert Israeli who tradgilly died in our beloved city addis ababa. First of all as I wrote in my previous article the existance of these elephants is real and you can go and see them yourslf because to see is to believe. No futher comment for me here anymore. With regad the Israeli elephant expert had never said he crossed from Eritrea to Tigray only he said that he crossed from Eritrea to ethiopia because majority if not all the elephants he would like to study about was in Ethiopia Tigray. he had made an extensive report to the internationl community as well as the ethiopian governmet to provide the needed protection for these wondeful animals and for that I have tremendous respect and appreciation for the Israeli Expert. as for your elephant experts, you should ask them why they have not studied about these animals.
Please, the box that your political leaders put you in and open your eyes and learn about your country if you’re one us to get the facts youself. If you can not free yourself, you can not free any one else.

TPLF does not need the help of mossad to spy. They are capabe of doing what the mossads are doing. You don’t know what you are talking about. You need to learn more about What TPLF can and can not do.
