OSLO, Norway — Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia broke the world record in the women’s 5,000 metres with a time of 14 minutes 11.15 seconds at the Bislett Games on Friday.

Dibaba, an Olympic and world champion who had never broken an outdoor world mark, improved the old record by more than five seconds.

Another Ethiopian, Meseret Defar, set the old record of 14:16.63 last year at Bislett Stadium. Defar did not enter Friday’s race. (more…)

Dibaba, an Olympic and world champion who had never broken an outdoor world mark, improved the old record by more than five seconds.

It is the 54th world record set at Bislett Stadium – second only to the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden – since 1924, and the first since one of athletics’ most famous venues was rebuilt four years ago.
