Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has confessed that the country’s US-backed troops have killed over 6,000 of Somali civilians.

The premier made the remarks on Thursday, saying that heavy clashes in Somalia caused the deaths and injuries of many civilians.

Earlier, Zenawi said that Ethiopian troops would leave Somalia on an urgent basis.

He mentioned two main reasons for the decision, the first one is lack of money and the second is lack of cooperation of the international community with the Ethiopian troops in operations in Somalia, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Zenawi also said the conflict between Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf and Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein was because of the clan fighting as the premier is from powerful clan of Hawiye and the president is from the second largest clan in Somalia.

Somalia has been without an effective central government since President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991. In 2006, US-backed Ethiopian troops invaded the country in an attempt to back Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government.

Fighting between Ethiopian-backed government forces and insurgents has displaced more than a million people.
