An encounter between two old acquaintances in a restaurant in northwest took a deadly turn Sunday night, leaving one man dead and another injured.

Around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night, an argument broke out between two men at the Meskerem Ethiopian restaurant on the 2400 block of 18th Street, NW.

Metro police say that the two men were Ethiopians who knew one another well. No argument is reported between them; one of the men allegedly paid his bar tab, pulled a .22-caliber handgun, and fired at the other man, grazing his neck. He then fired twice in the air. The shooter then turned the gun on himself, fatally shooting himself in the head. He was transported to Medstar, where he was pronounced dead.

The surviving victim was taken to Howard University Hospital, where he was treated and released to the police for questioning.

Police are describing the incident as an assault with a deadly weapon and suicide.
