NEW DELHI: Ethiopia’s Deriba Merga won the men’s New Delhi half-marathon Sunday, while his compatriot Aselefech Mergia claimed the women’s race.

Merga, who finished fourth in the marathon at Beijing Olympics, clocked a new course record of 59 minutes 15 minutes, leaving in his wake the Kenyan pair of Wilson Kipsang and Wilson Chebet.

Kipsang gave Merga a tough contest but had to settle for the second spot with a time of 59:16, while Chabet came in third in 59:34.

The previous course record of 1 hour and 43 seconds was created by Rwanda’s Dieudonne Disi when he won the title last year.

Mergia underscored Ethiopia’s domination by clocking 1 hour, 8 minutes, 17 seconds to win the women’s half-marathon.

Another Ethiopian runner, Genet Getenet finished second in 1:01:18 and Kenya’s Penninah Arusei came third in 1:08:20.
