At least 10 people died while 31 were injured in a clash between government forces and civilians in the Gambella region along the border with Sudan, sources said here on Sunday.

Local media reports say the incident occurred last week in a place called Puldan of the Gambella region.

The incident occurred between the Gambella regional special troops and civilians who were displaced from Akobo and settled in Puland of the region.

Reports say the incident was sparked when the regional governor or Gambella ordered the civilians to return to their original homes to which the civilians responded that they would require ample time to do so.

The media quoting university students from the area, said the civilian’s request was rejected and hence the troops were mobilised to move them, culminating in the incident.

Nine civilians and one soldier were killed in the incident while 23 civilians and eight troops were injured.

The civilians from Akobo were forced to flee their original place after facing repeated attack by gunmen of the Mursi ethnic who live in Southern Sudan, according to the report.

Two hundred livestock were also reported to have been killed by the incident while the whereabouts of 30 women and children are still unknown.

APA was however unable to confirm the incident from official sources Sunday.
